TIPS AND TECHNIQUE
STRETCHER BARS: AN INTRODUCTION
BY PAT THOMPSON
Traditionally canvases were stitched in hand, but today, many stitchers
prefer to work their canvas on stretcher bars.

Benefits of using stretcher bars include:

Decreased canvas distortion . Keeping a canvas taut aids in the blocking process required for finishing. During wet-blocking, a common solution for badly distorted canvases, thread colors may run. Canvas worked with metallic threads, may limit adequate blocking if distorted. As a reminder, belts are not blocked, so it is important that the canvas is not badly distorted.

Improved look. Stretcher bars require stitchers to use a “stabbing” method
of stitching. This method helps to keep stitches smooth with a consistent tension. This is especially important for long, less stable, or composite stitches. When stitching with stranded threads, the threads should be parallel to each other to fill the hole and create a smoother look. This is easier to achieve when the canvas is mounted on stretcher bars.

Comfort and ease of stitching . Using stretcher bars can make stitching more comfortable. Bars can help decrease cramping of your hands and lessen wrist tightness.

We have two types of stretcher bars - Evertites and Mini Bars. Evertites are wooden bars with screws that allows you to tighten the canvas as you work. Mini Bars are narrow, wooden bars which fit together with tongue and grooves. Canvases are mounted on stretcher bars with either tacks or staples. It is paramount when using bars that the canvas remain taut. So you may need to tighten the Evertites (using an allyn wrench) or when using mini bars remount the canvas.

If you haven’t given stretcher bars a try, consider using them for your next project to see a wonderful difference in the appearance of your stitching.

DOUBLE WOVEN STITCH

The Double Woven Stitch and its
many variations are a "go-to" when stitching an area with wonderful shading or for a background.

By keeping the thread light, the shading will come through and the background will recede.

This stitch can be used on leaves (right), flowers, clothing, or buildings.
Below are diagrams for two variations of the Double Woven Stitch.
Double Woven Stitch over 3
Double Woven Stitch over 5
Fill the open area created by the Double Woven Stitch over 5 with French Knots, another thread (below left), or beads. Or, leave it open (below right).
