Earn a Certificate in Culturally Responsive Program Evaluation

Starting in Summer 2018 the University of Wisconsin-Madison will be offering a non-credit professional development certificate in Culturally Responsive Evaluation. The certificate will take approximately 12 months to complete and is a mix of two in-person workshops on the UW-Madison campus, online sessions, and an applied project. It is a good fit for program directors, managers or educators in non-profit and government organizations who want to build their evaluation skills.

The first in-person workshop will be held on August 23rd, 2018 in conjunction with Day Two of the Serve Wisconsin grant writing workshops. Participants through Serve Wisconsin can attend this first in-person session and then enroll in the certificate program (for a fee).  Please contact Kim Kile for more information about the Certificate program:  [email protected]
Member Reflection: Charles Buza
AmeriCorps Member with NCCAP

When I was finishing college, I was at a loss on what I wanted to do moving forward. I knew I wanted to continue my education, but I was not ready for that step yet. Fortunately, my career advisor directed me to AmeriCorps.

Truthfully, I did not know too much about the program, but after doing some research I was immediately attracted to it. Service, this was what I was searching for. Something I regrettably had not a lot of in my life up to that point. When I found the specific program, NCCAP in Wausau, Wisconsin, I was further attracted.

Education was and is something that is very important to me, something that everyone is entitled to. My time with the Wausau School District, specifically Wausau East High School, has shown me why I serve. Simply put, I serve to give back what I have received. I have had my struggles in school and learning. So when I see students who have cognitive difficulties, social difficulties and trauma-filled lives trying to function successfully in school, I feel a connection with them. This does not mean I can relate to all my students' experiences, but I understand their hardships in school, their determination and their want for success.

Through these contacts with students, as well as the staff I serve, I get to build relationships. Building relationships is my program long goal because without a good rapport with those you serve, you cannot be effective as an AmeriCorps member.

Lastly, the other aspect I am getting out of my service experience is just that, experience. When I was searching for something to do after college, service came to my mind. The experience of serving allows me to step out of my comfort zone into a role and environment I am not too familiar with. To me, this is a great thing. No longer have my life's experiences so far been static. There has been a variety which combined with relationship building has made my role in AmeriCorps worthwhile.
