Wilton Library is closing early at 5pm on Thursday, April 11 to prepare for the Wilton Reads 2019 Author Visit with Heather Morris, The Tattooist of Auschwitz. The event is waitlist only.

Wilton Reads Author Visit: Heather Morris, The Tattooist of Auschwitz

Thursday, April 11 @7pm

Author Heather Morris will share her writing experiences when she visits with the Wilton Library audience as the culmination of Wilton Reads 2019, the community-wide reading program in conjunction with Wilton Public Schools. The Tattooist of Auschwitz is a vivid, harrowing, and ultimately hopeful re-creation of Lale Sokolov's experiences as the man who tattooed the arms of thousands of prisoners with what would become one of the most potent symbols of the Holocaust. The historical fiction based on Lale's life also is a testament to the endurance of love and humanity under the darkest possible conditions. Heather Morris is a native of New Zealand, now residing in Australia. She was introduced to an elderly gentleman who 'might just have a story worth telling'. The day she met Lale Sokolov changed both their lives. Their friendship grew and Lale embarked on a journey of self-scrutiny, entrusting the innermost details of his life during the Holocaust to her. New Perspectives Film Series: The Accountant of Auschwitz

In conjunction with our Wilton Reads 2019 programming, our New Perspectives documentary film series presents The Accountant of Auschwitz, a 2018 documentary about the 2015 trial in Germany of an SS Officer who was a bookkeeper at the Auschwitz concentration camp. In his early 90s at the time of his trial, Oskar Groning had been living quietly in a small town in Germany for decades. In the 1980s he had come out publicly about his time during WW2 in reaction to the rise of Holocaust denial with Groning vehemently denouncing the Holocaust deniers. The film raises many important issues about how Germany handled its Holocaust responsibility after the war as well as issues of personal culpability, redemption, possibly even forgiveness. Suggested donation: $5. Refreshments served. The New Perspectives Documentary series is programmed and moderated by filmmaker Megan Smith-Harris. A Q&A will follow the film. More info & register

Connecticut's Own Concert: The Madera Winds - I Got Rhythm

Sunday, April 14 @4pm

The Madera Wind Quintet performs an exciting program of dance music to celebrate the spring awakening. Pieces include waltzes, a tango, the Charleston, a Quick Step, a Pas de Deux, a Gavotte, a Passamezzo, and the ever popular and often danced, Hungarian Lapockas Tanc, aka 'the Shoulder Blade Dance'. The Madera Winds, formed in 2012, is a blend of Connecticut musicians who have performed over the last thirty years in other chamber music groups in Wilton as well as throughout Fairfield County. The members include Kerry Walker, WCSU professor of Flute; Ralph Kirmser, Oboist and a founding member of Madera; Janet Atherton, also founding member of Madera Winds and a member of the Norwalk Symphony Orchestra; Rosemary Dellinger played Principal Bassoon for four years with La Orquesta Sinfonica de Maracaibo, Venezuela and currently plays with the American Chamber Orchestra and the St. Thomas Orchestra; and Marjorie Seymour Callaghan, WCSU professor of Horn. Ten Practical Strategies to Help Your Children Improve Their Executive Function Skills

Children and teens with executive function deficits have difficulties managing time constructively; setting goals appropriately; controlling emotional and behavioral impulses; prioritizing; sustaining attention; planning and organizing; starting tasks and following through; self-regulating; and making mature judgments regarding right and wrong, and cause and effect. Dr. Mary Murphy will explain executive function and working memory with an emphasis on how parents can assist children in developing and implementing helpful strategies. No charge. How to Respond to an Overdose: Narcan Information and Training Session

Monday, April 8 @10am

This is an informational presentation, a demonstration, and a training session on how to acquire and administer Narcan, a lifesaving medication used to block the effects of opioids, especially in overdose situations. Free Narcan kits will be distributed. The program is sponsored by Wilton Library, Wilton Youth Council, Wilton Youth Services, Prevention Corps, and RYASAP. More info & register

Breast Cancer Survivors' Support Group

Post-treatment breast cancer survivors are invited to join in this monthly support group led by Nina Marino, LCSW. Nina was the Clinical Director of the former Breast Cancer Survival Center and is a breast cancer survivor. More info & register
