2019 Congressional Reception:
As part of its Government Relations Program, PALCUS co-hosted the 2019 Congressional Reception with Congressman Jim Costa (D, CA-16), Co-Chair of the Portuguese-American Congressional Caucus. Vice-Chair Katherine Soares served as Mistress of Ceremonies and conveyed messages from Chairwoman Angela Simões and from United Nations Secretary General António Guterres.

Meetings on the Hill:
PALCUS Directors spent additional time in Washington, D.C. meeting with caucus and prospective caucus members to inform members of Congress about changing demographics in the Portuguese-American community, issues of concern to Portuguese-Americans and participation in the Make Portuguese Count™ in the 2020 Census Campaign.
As a result of PALCUS' efforts, we are pleased to announce that two additional members of the 116th Congress have joined the Portuguese-American Congressional Caucus including the first Congresswoman of Portuguese descent elected to Congress.

PALCUS has earned a 2019 GuideStar Gold Seal of Transparency upgrading from the Bronze Level!
By publishing information about our goals, strategies, capabilities, and vision, we are highlighting the difference we help to make in the Portuguese-American community on a national level.
GuideStar USA, Inc. is an information service specializing in reporting on U.S. nonprofit companies. In 2016, its database provided information on 2.5 million organizations. Since 1994, GuideStar was one of the first central sources of information on U.S. nonprofits and is the world's largest source of information about nonprofit organizations.

Census Day 2019: T minus One Year and Counting!
April 2, 2019 was Census Kick-Off Day at the State House in Rhode Island. Marie Fraley, PALCUS National Census Director and member of the RI Governor's Complete Count Committee was on hand with Census Captain Leonel Teixeira, Fmr. Vice-Consul of Portugal in Providence, to Make Portuguese Count™ in Rhode Island.

PALCUS National Scholarship Applications
NOW OPEN!
PALCUS is pleased to announce that the 2019 application cycle for the PALCUS National Scholarships is now open.
The program was established by the Rosa Family in 2012 and is maintained by donations by Marc F. Rosa with matching funds from Merrill Lynch and other donors. This year the Alexandre António DaCosta Simões Memorial Scholarship will be added.
To be eligible, students must be a
current college undergraduate (at least freshman) or graduate student in an approved program of study. For more about eligibility and procedures, please visit:

Councilwoman Sofia Pereira from the city of Arcata, California is today's guest. She talks about how wanting to make a difference got her involved in local politics. She also talks about her vision for Arcata to become the 1st Zero Waste City in Humboldt County and how she thinks it's important to increase the city's use of technology to improve resident engagement and to make vital information easily accessible.

Diniz Borges, long-time educator and Portuguese community leader, was recently appointed as the first director of the Portuguese Beyond Borders Institute at Fresno State University in California. The project was founded in November 2018, after a $130,000 grant from the Luso-American Development Foundation, for launching a Portuguese-American Oral History Project and a speaker series. The newly created institute will offer a dynamic program of courses, collaborations and public events benefiting the Luso community in the San Joaquin Valley and students at Fresno State.

Ana Luisa Amaral at the Library of Congress

READING AND CONVERSATION WITH ANA LUÍSA AMARAL
Portuguese poet Ana Luísa Amaral will participate in a conversation and reading from her new book of poems What's in a name? (New Directions, 2019) translated by Margaret Jull Costa. Amaral is one of Portugal's most exciting poets whose work has been described as "small hypnotic miracles [...] reminiscent of Szymborska and of Emily Dickinson". This event will include a display of special editions of authors that have shaped Amaral's literary work and scholarship, like Emily Dickinson, William Shakespeare, and Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen.

Study Abroad: Comparative Arts in Portugal
Comparative Arts in Portugal will take place between the University of Minho in Braga and the city of Porto from June 6-18, 2019.
As a 3-credit Arts & Humanities course, Comparative Arts in Portugal offers students a unique opportunity to explore historic and cutting-edge visual arts and architecture, culinary traditions and the theatrical legacies of Northern Portugal. Students will participate in hands-on activities such as visiting medieval monasteries and Baroque palaces, UNESCO World Heritage sites and award-winning European Green Cities, the galleries and studio spaces of practicing artists, an ancient archaeological site where students will participate in an on-going dig, food tours and a cooking class with a Portuguese chef, a workshop in an avant-garde multi-media puppet theater, etc. Throughout this trip, students will have the opportunity not only to study authentic artworks, artifacts and monuments, but we will also meet and work with local artists, scholars, students and "foodies."

PALCUS Mission
In order to create a singular voice to advocate for the Portuguese-American and Luso-American communities at large, the Portuguese-American Leadership Council of the United States Inc. (PALCUS) was founded in 1991 as a non-partisan, non-profit, organization headquartered in Washington, D.C.
The PALCUS mission is to address domestic and international concerns of the Portuguese-American Community.
The Council conducts an expanding program of educational and public affairs activities on issues of interest to the Portuguese-American community and of salience to the Luso-American Relationship.
PALCUS is committed to serving the community through increasingly active government relations efforts, the promotion of a greater awareness of ethnic accomplishments and encouraging stronger ties between Portugal and the United States. In this role PALCUS advances the community professionally, politically and culturally while working to ensure that issues directly affecting our community are addressed through our network of government and community leaders.
PALCUS is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization under the IRS tax code and incorporated under the laws of the District of Columbia. Donations are tax deductible to extent allowed by law and will be acknowledged.
