July 31: Kirby Road Sidewalks Pardon Our Dust Meeting
Fairfax County Department of Transportation
 
In coordination with Supervisor Foust's office, the Fairfax County Department of Transportation will hold a Pardon Our Dust Meeting to provide an update on the upcoming construction of projects 2G40-088-017, Kirby Road Sidewalk - Birch Road to Ivy Hill Drive and 2G40-088-018, Kirby Road Sidewalk - Ivy Hill Drive to Corliss Court. These projects will construct new curb, gutter, sidewalks, and drainage improvements along the north side of Kirby Road.

August 1 through 4: Frying Pan Farm 4-H Fair and Carnival
 
Don't miss the 71st annual 4-H Fair and Carnival, which will take place at Frying Pan Farm Park in Herndon. This event is four days of fresh air, farm fun, and good times. Enjoy carnival rides, games, live entertainment, and more.

August 2, 16, 30: River Fishing by Boat
Riverbend Park
 
Fish for smallmouth bass and sunfish from a canoe or jon boat. Get started with an introduction to boating and fishing basics. Previous experience rowing or paddling is not required. Boats, PFDs, fishing rods, and bait are provided. There is a maximum of three participants per boat, one of whom must be 16 or older. Each participant must register. The cost is $16 per person. This program will be canceled in the event of inclement weather or hazardous river conditions.

August 4 and 18: Wood Carving Lessons and Grinding Demonstrations
Colvin Run Mill
 
Enjoy free wood carving lessons with the Northern Virginia Carvers at Colvin Run Mill. No reservations are required. There is a nominal charge for wood blanks.
 
Then, stop to s ee and hear 19th century technology at work. The miller will be grinding, conditions permitting. No reservations are required.
 
Tours of the mill cost $8 for adults, $7 for students 16 and up with ID, and $6 for children and seniors.

August 6: National Night Out
Fairfax County Police Department
 
National Night Out is an annual community building and crime prevention event that provides residents with the opportunity to meet their neighborhood police officers and spend time with their neighbors. This year, National Night Out is Tuesday, August 6 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and everyone in Fairfax County is encouraged to participate.

Communities throughout the County will spend the evening outdoors with food, music, and children's activities to promote neighborhood comradery and take a stand against crime. FCPD officers will stop by to meet members of the community and to strengthen police-community partnerships throughout the County.

August 8, 13, 22: Deer Management Program Public Information Meetings
 
The Fairfax County Deer Management Program is implemented each year to manage the abundant local white-tailed deer population. Meetings are held in the fall to discuss the program with the community and answer questions.

The primary objective of the Fairfax County Deer Management Program is deer population control on public parklands. Management actions reflect a variety of interests, including protecting human health and safety, reducing environmental damage, conserving biodiversity, and maintaining healthy deer herds.

The Fairfax County deer management program continues to expand and improve its deer management efforts through the utilization of all available population control tools as approved by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.

August 13: N. Glebe Road over Pimmit Run Bridge Rehabilitation Project
Virginia Department of Transportation
 
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will host a public information meeting on the N. Glebe Road over Pimmit Run Bridge Rehabilitation project to introduce the project to the community and provide residents with an opportunity to comment. This project will  rehabilitate the North Glebe Road (Route 120) bridge over Pimmit Run to improve safety for drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians, and extend the overall life of the bridge.
 
The planned improvements include repairing and resurfacing the bridge deck, repairing bridge abutments, beams, bearings and piers, replacing the pedestrian barrier and handrail, and guardrail and drainage upgrades.  As part of the construction of these improvements, tentative maintenance of traffic plans include a potential lane closure of the left turn lane onto Chain Bridge Road from N. Glebe Road.
 
The meeting will include an open house, a formal presentation, and a question and answer period.  Individual questions will also be addressed during the open house.

August 19: McLean CBC Task Force Meeting

The County has been working on a study of the McLean Commercial Business Center (CBC), more commonly known as downtown McLean. The community-driven study will be used to update the Comprehensive Plan, which will guide future planning and development, including land uses, development intensities, transportation, public facilities, and design standards.
 
The study began in June 2018 with three well-attended community workshops conducted by Streetsense, the consultant hired by the County. The community's input from these three sessions shaped the draft plans that were presented at two open houses last fall. Additional community input on the draft plans was solicited at the open houses and a meeting on the Final Vision Plan was held in December.

Since then, the study's task force, which is comprised of McLean residents and civic group representatives, has been working with County staff and the community to translate this vision into recommendations for changes to the Comprehensive Plan. The task force's monthly meetings are open to the public. Details on the next task force meeting are included below.

August 20: Great Falls Senior Center Event

Artist Ronni Jolles creates her signature paper paintings by using layers cut and ripped from all over the world from countries such as Thailand, France, Italy, Bhutan, China, Japan, Korea, India, Nepal Philippines, Egypt, Zimbabwe, and Mexico. She then uses acrylic paints and sealants on top of the cut, torn, and layered papers to bring out the textures and variations in color to create textured paper artistry. She calls this innovative process "Painting with Paper."

Join the Great Falls Senior Center for a discussion with the artist to hear her explain the evolution of her unique form of paper artistry reflecting the areas where she finds inspiration: family, travel, music, and theater.

September 6 through 8: Tysons Library Friends Quarterly Book & Media Sale

Join the Friends of the Tysons-Pimmit Regional Library for its next quarterly book sale in the renovated library branch, located at 7584 Leesburg Pike in Falls Church.

Election Officers Needed!

The Fairfax County Office of Elections is currently recruiting voters to serve as Election Officers a few days a year, including during the upcoming 2019 elections. Election Officers are needed at each of the 243 precincts in Fairfax County to run the polls and assist voters. Training begins in September.

To apply, fill and submit the online form located at www.vote4fairfax.com/apply.

In order to be an Election Officer, you must:
  • Be fluent in English
  • Be a registered voter in the Commonwealth of Virginia
  • Be able to fulfill the Federal I-9 employment eligibility requirements
  • Attend a 3-hour training class
  • Arrive at the polling place at 5:00 a.m. and remain until all work has been completed after the polls close at 7:00 p.m.
  • Have basic computer skills
The Election Officer's main priority is to ensure the accuracy and integrity of the election process. A typical Election Day consists of:
  • Arriving one hour before polls open to set up voting equipment
  • Hanging up pertinent signage
  • Preparing the polling room for voting
  • Processing voters throughout the day
  • Assisting with operating voting equipment
  • Securing voting equipment and closing down the polling place at the end of the day
Election Officers are offered a stipend of $175 for serving a full day. Bilingual citizens are strongly encouraged to serve as language assistance is needed in many precincts. There is a particular need for language officers in certain areas of the County who speak Korean or Vietnamese. Residency in Fairfax County is not required.

It is a wonderful opportunity for those interested in the election process or public service. Civic-minded individuals are needed to help make Election Day a success!

Provide Comments on Dolley Madison Corridor Study

The Fairfax County Department of Transportation is working on a study of Dolley Madison Boulevard between the Dulles Toll Road and Old Dominion Drive in McLean. The purpose of the study is to analyze this area and recommend solutions to improve traffic conditions. At a public meeting held on June 13, the project team presented a variety of options based on traffic model analysis. The options and the presentation from that meeting are available online. Public input on the short-term and long-term improvements presented will help inform how the County proceeds.

Great Falls Citizens Association Seeks Resident Feedback - "Looking Forward to 2025" Survey

The Great Falls Citizens Association (GFCA) is conducting a survey to gather information on what is important to residents and where the association should focus its efforts over the next five years. While the survey was originally directed toward GFCA members on standing committee issues, the GFCA encourages all adult residents in Great Falls (regardless of membership status) to provide feedback. Comments, concerns, and recommendations on issues not addressed in the survey can be noted under each section and at the end.

Herndon Friday Night Live!

Friday nights during the summer, Friday Night Live! concerts are held on the Herndon Town Green. Concerts are free and feature popular local and regional acts.

Music at Arrowbrook Centre Park

From June through August, the Fairfax County Park Authority carries on the American tradition of summer concerts by offering musical performances ranging from acoustic to zydeco at parks throughout Fairfax County. There will also be children's performances, international song and dance nights, and drive-in movies. In Dranesville, a concert series is held at Arrowbrook Centre Park in Herndon.

Car Seat Safety and Install Events
Fairfax County Police District Stations

Although installing car seats for babies and children can be difficult, proper installation is crucial to ensure that children travel safely. To help achieve this goal, police stations across the County host free car seat safety and install events throughout the year. You will learn how you can make sure your car seat is properly installed to keep your child as safe as possible.
 
In preparation for your appointment, you should install the seat in your vehicle using the instructions that came with the car seat. Trained officers will review the car seat instructions and car owner's manual to be certain that they are being followed as they should. All events are held in the parking lot of that district station. Remaining dates and times for the Reston and McLean District Stations are included below:

The McLean American Association of University Women (AAUW) is collecting used books, CDs, DVDs, software, children's books, records, and recent textbooks for their 49th Used Book Sale. Proceeds from the sale are used to help fund scholarships for women.

2019 Low-Cost Rabies Clinics
Fairfax County Animal Shelter

Virginia law requires that all dogs and cats more than four months old be vaccinated for rabies and have their vaccinations up-to-date. The Fairfax County Animal Shelter will offer rabies vaccinations at the reduced rate of $15 per pet during on the dates included below. Only cash and check will be accepted.
 
Dogs, cats, and ferrets will be vaccinated at these clinics. Dogs must be on leashes and cats and ferrets must be in carriers. All pets will receive a one-year rabies vaccination. To obtain a three-year vaccination, bring your pet's rabies certificate (not just the tag) showing the current rabies vaccination expiration date. 2019 County Dog Licenses will be sold for an additional cost of $10.
