Dr. Bakotic
is a dermatopathologist who founded the Rhett Foundation for the Advancement of Podiatric Medical Education with his career-long business partner Joseph "Jody" Hackle, MD. NYCPM received the foundation's first gift, an unrestricted grant, in October, and has just received a second grant (see related story).

And Faculty Authors Celebrate Large Compendium
Faculty and staff who attended the snowstorm-postponed 2018 Faculty Authors' Luncheon on April 18 celebrated the truly large number of citations compiled in this year's bibliography. The compilation lists a total of 105 citations, 69 of which were distinct citations authored by 25 researchers. Aaron Glockenberg, DPM ('79)
Associate Professor of Podiatric Medicine and Orthopedics,
Diplomate, American Board of Podiatric Medicine
Dr. Aaron Glockenberg earned his bachelor's  degree in biology from American International College in Springfield, MA in 1973, and was interested in getting into medicine. Working in a microbiology lab after graduation, he applied to podiatry school when a podiatrist got him interested in the field of podiatric medicine.
After graduating from NYCPM in 1979, Dr. Glockenberg completed his residency at the Montrose VA Hospital (in association with NYCPM), and then, with a fellowship, studied biomechanics and orthopedics at NYCPM under Joseph D'Amico, DPM. Faculty and Staff Wish Victor Jimenez a Fond Farewell

In Memoriam
Edward M. Recoon, DPM ('54)
Edward M. Recoon, NYCPM Class of 1954, died April 8 at age 87. He attended the University at Buffalo and then the New York College of Podiatric Medicine, and started his own practice in Cheektowaga, NY.
He served in numerous capacities on the executive board of the Podiatry Society of New York throughout the 1960s, '70s, and '80s. He served as president of the Western New York division of NYSPMA from 1975-1977. (Source: PM News)

Senior Adenike Sonaike Wins Second Prize in APMWA Student Writing Competition
Fourth-year student Adenike Sonaike won second prize in the most recent APMWA Student Writing Competition, for a paper titled "Providing Care for Our Population with Special Health Care Needs."
In the paper, Sonaike discusses obstacles to communication with patients in the special health care needs (SHCN) population, especially children, and the important role of the caregiver in communicating the patient's pain and symptoms.
She also stresses the importance of addressing the patient directly during an exam, despite any communication disability, in order to "accelerate their level of comfort" towards the practitioner. She recommends using basic positive techniques of nonverbal
communications (e.g. smiling and nodding head, or frowning and shaking head) as well.
Sonaike concludes that "adopting good habits will help comfort this population of patients during in-office procedures, which can be beneficial to them and to [your] practice."
The APMWA Student Writing Competition is sponsored by an APMA Educational Foundation endowment from Dr. and Mrs. Steven Berlin. Sonaike received an honorarium of $750 and will be recognized in both APMA News and APMWA Newsletter.
