This year all our plans were affected by the COVID-19 Pandemic – including our ALL IN GNV Conference & Expo. In light of that, we have created the ALL IN GNV PIVOT Video Series, a professional development virtual response where we feature dozens of speakers and guests who share their ideas, experiences and reflections on how COVID-19 has affected them both personally and professionally as they learn to pivot through these new uncharted waters.
Our first video in this series brings back our keynote speaker from our 2019 ALL IN GNV Conference & Expo, Alexa Carlin. Alexa will share with us how the onset of a worldwide pandemic has changed her personally and professionally and how she has had to pivot to succeed.

VOTING UPDATE
The Census is Back!
Deadline extended again to Halloween - October 31
The U.S. Census will conclude on Halloween—October 31—and so we actually have 18 more days to ensure we capture every last one of the federal dollars and congressional representation to which we are entitled. Remember, Alachua County lost out on an estimated $390 million dollars this past decade, because of our Census undercount. Now more than ever, it is imperative we are all counted. In Alachua County, we are inching forward each week, with 66% of individuals counted, ahead of the state of Florida at 63.6% but a smidge behind the nation as a whole at 66.8%.
Your Chamber President/CEO Eric Godet stopped by local radio recently to help get the word out. Listen to his message here and share with your employees, co-workers, friends and family, especially those in the Butler Plaza, Innovation Square, UF’s Sorority Row and Waldo areas, which are running behind the rest of the county. To wrap up the count, Census takers will work with administrators at colleges, senior centers, prisons, and other facilities that house large groups of people to make sure everyone is counted, and in December, the Census Bureau will deliver apportionment counts to the President and Congress as required by law.
Visit www.2020census.gov for all the information you need to complete your census. Let’s close out this challenging year strong—our hospitals, schools, fire departments, social service agencies and businesses depend on it. Remember, We’re Still Counting on You, Alachua County!

Election Day is Tuesday, November 3
As you know, one key step to ensuring the business voice is heard is to become informed on the issues that matter to our community and to vote. Though the pandemic has necessitated a new way of doing many things, we are committed to helping you make your voice heard. Candidate interviews for local races will be updated and posted on our website in the coming weeks.
Your vote matters. Note these important dates for the November 3rd election:
- Last day to register to vote: Monday, October 5
- Early voting takes place: Monday, October 19 through Saturday, October 31
- Deadline to request a mail-in ballot: Saturday, October 24 by 5:00 p.m.
- Election Day: Tuesday, November 3
- Deadline to return mail-in ballots: Tuesday, November 3 by 7:00 p.m.

Nominations for the LYFEhouse Youth Leadership Awards are now open! The award celebrates teens who exemplify leadership qualities in their daily lives, whether at school, home or in the community. EDUCATION ANNOUNCEMENT
Local student wins national recognition for essay
An Eastside High School student is one of just a handful of winners of a nationwide essay grant competition for student-athletes.
Senior Nylee Alston’s essay was among ten chosen for top honors out of more than 1000 entrants to the United States Tennis Association Foundation’s National Junior Tennis and Learning (NJTL) competition. Her selection includes a $5000 award.
For the last five years, Nylee has been involved with Aces in Motion (AIM), a free after-school program for middle and high school students that according to its website “promotes academic achievement, life skills development and healthy lifestyles,” primarily through tennis, but also through such activities as college trips, tutoring, and other enrichment activities. AIM is a chapter of the NJTL Network.
“The program and the coaches really push you to be the best you can be,” said Nylee. “It’s helped me feel more confident.”

The startGNV Board of Directors is thrilled to announce the appointment of Lauren Asmus as the organization’s new full-time Director. Lauren Asmus succeeds Lauren Hemingway, Program Director for the Tech Talent Initiative.

Lauren Asmus’s strong background in community relations and project management is a great asset and we are so excited to welcome her to the team,” says Aidan Augustin, startGNV Board President and Co-Founder and President of Feathr.
Lauren Asmus brings nine years of experience as a communications and public outreach strategist, serving a diverse array of corporate and nonprofit clients. She specializes in community organizing, public relations, and public affairs. She moved to Gainesville in 2019, where she served as the Communications Director for CareerSource North Central Florida. After completing her Master’s Degree in Communications and Media at Florida State University, Asmus served two years as an Americorps Volunteer in Service to America in Billings, Montana.

WCJB TV20 congratulates Alan Chatman, VP/GM WCJB TV20, for being named one of the top 10 local TV leaders by Radio and Television Business Report. Chatman is a University of Florida graduate and has been at the ABC affiliate serving Gainesville, since joining as GSM in 1994. In May 2017, Chatman was promoted to VP/GM, while keeping GSM duties. That elevation in rank came as Gray Television completed its acquisition of WCJB TV20 from Diversified Communications. WCJB TV20 in Gainesville is known for being the first local station to have a news department and has been the dominate news leader for almost 50 years. Today, it offers The CW and MeTV on digital multicast channels tied to WCJB TV20.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month
October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and this year, more than 279,000 people will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in the United States. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in American women, but you may be surprised to learn that several common beliefs about breast cancer are, in fact, myths.
Educating yourself about risk factors for breast cancer can be one of the most powerful ways to help prevent it. That’s why so much of what the American Cancer Society does is dedicated to helping people learn how to reduce their risk of breast cancer and understand the importance of regular screenings. Mammograms can often find or detect breast cancer early, when it’s small and even before a lump can be felt.
Knowing the facts can help save lives. The more you know about your risk for breast cancer and things you can do that might help lower your risk, the more you can advocate for your own health. As we head into Breast Cancer Awareness Month, please forward this email to someone you care about who would benefit from this information.
