Holiday Greetings from Saskatoon!
It's a busy time of preparation and anticipation, both seasonally and in the work of our organization.

Members of the SLA Executive have spent time preparing for our meeting with the Public Library Engagement Panel that takes place on Saturday, December 1st. We look forward to a collaborative

meeting and are hopeful that the Engagement session will help move us forward together in the best interests of Saskatchewan public libraries. SLA appreciates the opportunity to speak to the tremendous value that public libraries have in our communities.

The Happy Hour in Saskatoon was great fun and the turnout was excellent. The 2nd Avenue Grill was a great venue and our first time holding the Happy Hour there. It was a nice change from our usual spot! Thanks to those who organized the event. It was a lovely evening.

The SLA Board conducts business through a mix of in person and teleconference meetings and online communication. The Executive and Board are in regular contact via email and use an online communication platform called Basecamp. Those of you on SLA committees will be familiar with this platform. These tools are essential as board members are scattered around the province. By meeting via teleconference, Executive and Board members are able to participate in the work of SLA while being absent from work as little as possible. The face-to-face meetings are always preferred, but for the purposes of cost and time efficiency, the teleconference platform is a wonderful option. Our next Board meeting will be via teleconference in January.

Good tidings and best wishes to all of you throughout Saskatchewan as we approach the Holidays. May 2018 end well as we anticipate new challenges and joys for 2019!

SLA President

Name: Moraya Coleman

Title: Programming Associate at J.S. Wood and Round Prairie Branch, Saskatoon Public Library.

Born and lived: I was born in Saskatoon, but I have travelled quite a substantial portion the world. I've moved away several times, twice during the summer with my best friend, to Kananaskis to work at a hotel, and then to Vancouver. I resided in

Edmonton for two years, most of that time my best friend was primarily a bar called the Buckingham on Whyte Ave. I fell in love there, and that was sweet, but then I decided to leave (my brain is a mystery), c'est la vie! I travelled around Asia for 3 months before moving back to Saskatoon. And here still I can be found, for better or for worse!

Early Life: I grew up as an oblivious and happy child (and a big flirt in my teenage years), my favourite things to do were reading the same books over and over again, playing my N64 (the same games over and over again), and being a social butterfly. My father took my sister, brother, and me out for dinner almost every Tuesday and Friday when he had us, and afterwards we would go to the movie store, 49 Cent Video or Blockbuster, where we rented the same movies over and over again. Mostly Clue, Three Men and a Little Lady, and Mighty Ducks 2. I'm an extrovert, as it is, and making friends to invite over for tea parties is still one of my favourite activities.

Kari Zinkhan-Davies,  previously a librarian at RPL,  began a new position at the Provincial Library and Literacy Office  in October as Public Library Ccoordinator, Ministry ofEducation, Public Library Planning. She was previously Outreach Librarian at RPL.

Preparations are underway for the Saskatchewan Library Association's third annual One Book One Province program. One Book One Province will be held in March 2019 and will centre around Lisa Bird-Wilson's award-winning book Just Pretending, published by Coteau Books. This powerful short story collection addresses notions of identity and belonging, inviting readers and program participants to consider their own identity and sense of belonging. Thanks to generous sponsorship from SIGA, celebration events are being planned for Regina, Saskatoon, and Prince Albert. These celebrations will feature readings by Lisa and other writers from the Saskatchewan Aboriginal Writers' Circle. Additionally, support from the Saskatchewan Writers' Guild will allow Lisa to visit several libraries around the province for readings and discussion around the key question: Who do you think you are?
Get your copy of Just Pretending now so you are ready to join the conversation on March 2019. Encourage your library, your book club, and your friends to read and gather to talk about the book. Check out the One Book One Province web site-new information is being added regularly.

Everyone, Including Culture, Wins When You Buy Lottery Tickets

The core funding that SLA receives through SaskCulture is part of the Lottery Trust where a percentage of every lottery ticket sold goes to support sport, culture and recreation groups within Saskatchewan. It appears that recent lottery sales are not meeting expectations, which will not have an immediate effect on SLA. However we encourage you to remind audiences and arts council members that buying lottery tickets benefits the entire community.  Saskatchewan Lotteries has also launched an app that you can download  in the App Store or Google Play. More information is available on the Saskatchewan Lotteries website.
