Decrease Observed in Both First Marriage &
First Divorce Rates

Since 2008, both the first marriage and first divorce rates have generally decreased. The first marriage rate declined from 49.8 first marriages (per 1,000 never married women) in 2008 to a rate of 45.2 in 2016. Similarly, the first divorce rate declined, moving from 18.7 divorces (per 1,000 women in a first marriage) in 2008 to a rate of 15.4 in 2016. Rates by educational attainment and race/ethnicity are also examined. To see the latest, check out our two new Family Profiles First Marriage Rate in the U.S., 2016 and  First Divorce Rate in the U.S., 2016.
