Meet
Rachel Thompson
,
Guest Services
for the Charlevoix Area Chamber of Commerce
"I grew up in Charlevoix Michigan. I attend Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Illinois where I’m studying art therapy with a major in art, and minor in psychology. I hope to start a private practice for art therapy and gain the skills to accomplish that future goal. Fond memories from growing up in Charlevoix sparked my interest in working for the Charlevoix Chamber of Commerce. I always enjoyed riding the ponies at Kid's Day or going to the beach with family—no matter the weather. I’m excited to continue learning more about Charlevoix, and helping more people understand why they should vacation or relocate here."

Meet
Caitlin Cole
,
Membership Coordinator
for the Charlevoix Area of Chamber of Commerce
"I was raised in Charlevoix and really enjoyed growing up in this community. I earned a bachelor’s degree in Public Relations from Central Michigan University. After college I moved downstate but ultimately decided home is where the heart is and moved back up north. There is so much to love about Charlevoix- the lakes, the beaches, the people. I can’t wait to share what I love about Charlevoix through my position at the Chamber."

Childcare Subject of Char-Em United Way’s Inaugural Jeffersonian Dinner
|
|
As Char-Em United Way prepares to celebrate 75 years of support in Charlevoix & Emmet counties, it draws on a much older technique for discussing the modern challenge of accessible, affordable childcare. The technique is the Jeffersonian Dinner, inspired by Revolutionary era thinker and leader, Thomas Jefferson himself.
Jefferson was noted for bringing people of wide-ranging opinions together to discuss thorny issues. In the comfort of his home at Monticello, dinner guests would find themselves at ease. State politicians could focus more on what they had in common than how they differed, and often in that environment, new ideas to strengthen the emerging nation would bubble to the surface.
In a modern-day twist, Char-Em United Way intends to sponsor a Jeffersonian Dinner to bring a small group of thinkers together for the purpose of exploring the issue of childcare. The dinner, generously hosted by local residents and Char-Em United Way supporters, Jim and Jo Ellen Rudolph, will take place in mid-July. Guests will include professionals in the field, business owners, policy-makers, and childcare business owners.

Support the Modernization of the Soo Locks
|
First completed in 1855, the Soo Locks have been providing vessels safe passage for well over a century. The Locks are an integral part of the Michigan and US economy with over $500 billion worth of iron ore shipped through the Locks each year. There are currently four parallel chambers that make up the Soo Locks today. The largest of which, the Poe Lock, stands at 1,200 feet long and handles 85 percent of the cargo shipped through the region. The Poe Lock is the only lock that can handle the largest iron ore freighters, and if it was shut down – even for repairs – it would send the country into a recession and result in the loss of 11 million jobs.
We will be compiling a list of businesses and individuals throughout the region to show Congress strong support from northern Michigan for modernizing the Soo Locks.

SBA's Disaster Loan Application Deadline is July 23
|
The U.S. Small Business Administration is reminding small businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small businesses engaged in aquaculture and most private nonprofit organizations that
July 23
is the filing deadline for federal economic injury disaster loans in Michigan
as a result of excessive rain from May 4 through Aug. 4, 2017, which includes Charlevoix County.
Under this declaration, the SBA’s Economic Injury Disaster Loan program is available to eligible farm-related and nonfarm-related entities that suffered financial losses as a direct result of this disaster. With the exception of aquaculture enterprises, SBA cannot provide disaster loans to agricultural producers, farmers, or ranchers.
Applicants may apply online using the Electronic Loan Application (ELA) via SBA’s secure website at
