At the Annual Business Session held July 23, new officers and board members were elected for the coming year. Each of these physicians joins the MAFP Board of Directors:

Three Receive Special Awards 
at Annual Meeting
Three family physicians were honored at the Annual Meeting with special awards recognizing them for their service to family medicine.

Dr. Bill Jackson of Corinth received the John Howell Family Physician of the Year Award. Dr. Jackson has been in solo private practice since 1996 and has held every office in the MAFP including president. 

Dr. Brent Smith of Cleveland received the New Physician of the Year Award. He has served on the MAFP Board and recently served as president of the American Academy of Family Physicians Foundation.

Dr. Scott Carlton received the MAFP Military Award. He serves with the Mississippi Medical Command Unit within the National Guard 155th Armored Brigade. He recently served for six years on the MAFP Board.
St. Dominic to Host Wound Care Event Aug. 23-24

St. Dominic's Wound Healing Center is pleased to announce our first Wound Care Symposium for primary care practitioners and other specialists who treat patients dealing with the vexing problems associated with  chronic, non-healing or acute wounds. The Wound Care Symposium will take place August 23-24, 2019 at the St. Dominic's Toulouse Building located at 3800 I-55 Frontage Road, Jackson, MS 39216.  

The Symposium offers a wide variety of topics addressing all aspects of wound care treatment including medical, surgical, vascular and pharmaceutical options.  Speakers include local experts who will offer valuable information on symptoms, differentials, work-ups and when to refer. The Wound Care Symposium has been approved for 9.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits(TM). Applications for AAFP credit and nursing credit are pending.

Past Family Physician of the Year 
Dr. Kelly Segars Dies
Segars
Dr. Kelly Segars, who was honored in 2002 as MAFP's Family Physician of the Year, died July 23 at the age of 89. His obituary can be found here.

Dr. Segars attended Auburn University and served in Korea while serving in the U.S. Army.  Dr. Segars graduated from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine in 1959 and served his internship with the U.S. Health Service Commissioned Corps in Norfolk, Virginia. After that, he moved to Iuka and began private practice at the Iuka Clinic. As his practice grew, he established The Segars Clinic and was joined by his son, Scott. The Segars Clinic grew to a 65-room clinic and employed 35 people. The practice was honored by Patient Care Magazine as the number one family care facility in the nation in 1986.

Dr. Segars is survived by his wife of almost 67 years, Martha, three children and five grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Iuka United Methodist Church. The MAFP will make a donation to the MAFP Foundation in Dr. Segars' honor.
