The Westside Middle School Huskies Future Problem Solving Program (FPSP) team won first place in the Junior Division at the Georgia FPSP State Bowl in Athens on Saturday, March 24, and has advanced to the 2018 International Competition to be held at the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse on June 7 - 10.
In the FPSP, students are given a "Future Scene," set 20 years into the future, in which developments in a science or social-studies related area are beginning to cause conflict for the future population. They must develop sixteen ways to address that concern, and ultimately create a plan of action based on their strongest solution idea. Teams of four students are given only two hours to accomplish this daunting task.
Sixth graders: Ashton Graham, Shyler Harris, Seddy Slayton, and Timothy Yang, scored high enough on their qualifying problem topic of philanthrocapitalism to earn an invitation to the State Bowl. They addressed problems related to the topic of cloud computing, and outscored eleven other teams to win the Junior Division and the opportunity to represent the state of Georgia at this summer's International Competition. Three sixth graders from Westside's FPSP: Nathaniel Magnussen, McKayla Rowe, and Kaleb Strid, joined the first four students in the creative presentation of their solution, known as the "Presentation of Action Plan," and helped Westside place fourth in that category of the competition. We are eagerly awaiting our trip to Wisconsin for the International Competition in June!
Teacher Samantha George says "I am tremendously proud of these students and honored to be their FPSP coach. The only aspect of their performance more remarkable than their individual creativity is their outstanding ability to collaborate so effectively on a very demanding task. They have gained valuable skills from this experience that will benefit them for the rest of their lives as scholars, professionals, and citizens. I strongly encourage other schools in Barrow County to participate in this challenging and rewarding program."

BRES Eagles Soar
Thirty-two Bramlett 5th graders participated in 4-H District Project Achievement on Saturday, March 24, at South Jackson Elementary School in Jackson County. These students competed against 4th and 5th grade students from seven North Georgia school systems. Way to soar, Bramlett Eagles!
4-H empowers young people to lead for a lifetime. The programs in science, healthy living and citizenship are backed by a network of 100 public universities and a robust community of 4-H volunteers and professionals. Through hands-on learning, kids build not only confidence, creativity and curiosity, but also life skills such as leadership and resiliency to help them thrive today and tomorrow.
Auburn Elementary Jr. Beta Club
Statham Elementary Jr. Beta Club
This school year, Auburn Elementary School (AES) and Statham Elementary School (SES) inducted Charter Members into new National Junior Beta Clubs established at each school. Candidates are nominated by their teachers on the basis of grades and behavior. Students promise to uphold the ideals of academic achievement, character, service, and leadership. Nine students from SES and thirty-one students from AES were recognized at the Jr. Beta Club Ceremony on April 11th.
Inductees have accomplished quite a bit this year. The AES Beta Club lead the Box Top for Education program, sent handwritten letters to soldiers who are overseas, supported teachers and staff with snacks during the school year, and coordinated and hosted a school "glow" dance. The SES Beta Club cleaned the beach area at Fort Yargo, played piano for residents at Mulberry Grove Senior Living Residence, tended to the flower gardens at Nativity Lutheran Church, and helped sort food at the Athens Food Bank.
