MAPS FAQ Released, MOA receiving comments and concerns
The Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) has released a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document regarding the number of new laws pertaining to licensed prescribers and dispensers that are taking effect this year. The new laws are aimed at curbing the opioid epidemic in Michigan, with some of the regulations dealing specifically with the Michigan Automated Prescription System (MAPS).
The Michigan Osteopathic Association (MOA) Safe Opioid Use Task Force has been working with LARA regarding the new regulations and addressing concerns raised by the Task Force, and by MOA members. The MOA will continue to work with membership and LARA in clarifying the new regulations. As some of the requirements overlook practical application and threaten to reduce the number of providers willing to treat pain management, the MOA is collecting comments and concerns from membership.

The CDC Childhood Immunization Awards were announced April 23, 2018, as part of National Infant Immunization Week. Michigan received several nominations this year, all were deserving candidates. The CDC Childhood Immunization Champion Award is given jointly by the CDC Foundation
and CDC, the award honors individuals from around the nation who are doing an exemplary job or going above and beyond to promote childhood immunizations in their communities. The 2018 Michigan awardee is Veronica McNally.

Veronica and Sean McNally lost their 3-month-old daughter, Francesca, to whooping cough (pertussis) on May 17, 2012. Driven by grief and an overwhelming need to understand how a seemingly "old-fashioned" disease could take their baby's life, the couple founded the Franny Strong Foundation to educate audiences about the need to vaccinate against whooping cough. "I had a child, and my child would be here but for this tragic and terrible disease," Ms. McNally said after her daughter's passing. "This foundation is really, for the rest of my life, my tribute to her life and to what happened to her."
The Franny Strong Foundation has expanded its mission from promoting whooping cough vaccination to boosting all of Michigan's lagging childhood immunization rates. Ms. McNally was a driving force behind a new statewide campaign to increase Michigan's childhood immunization rates to at least 80 percent within five years. A coalition of physicians, nurses, parents, and public health officials-including the Michigan Osteopathic Association- joined Ms. McNally to launch the
"I Vaccinate" campaign in March 2017.
"I Vaccinate" has since generated interest from local news, parenting blogs, and concerned citizens across the state of Michigan. Ms. McNally was a crucial part of the campaign's early success - her foundation conducted pre-campaign research to identify the best communications strategies and tactics. This research helped the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services plan and carry out the campaign.
For her tireless work to educate others about the importance of pertussis vaccination, Veronica McNally is Michigan's 2018 CDC Childhood Immunization Champion.

Dr. Morrone has presented on opioid prescribing at past MOA conventions and is an expert on the issue working with federal officials officials on addiction treatment and opioid prescribing policies.

Spring Convention featuring Physician Wellness Center
The 119th Annual Spring Scientific Convention will feature a
Physician Wellness Center.
The center will offer demonstrations of Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) techniques,
and a healing experience for convention attendees.
The Wellness Center will also include yoga sessions, both private and group:
Friday 11:30 am - 2 pm and Saturday 11:30 am - 1 pm.

Physicians running micropractices limit the size of their patient population and employ time-saving technologies to increase efficiency; these actions serve the goal of fostering a strong patient-doctor relationship.

McLaren invests $1.1 million to establish epilepsy care unit
McLaren Health Care Corp. has equipped itself with an epilepsy sub specialty team as the Grand Blanc-based medical system focuses on an expected increase in diagnoses of the neurological disease. About $1.1 million was invested into McLaren Macomb to build an Epilepsy Monitoring Unit under its Neurosciences Institute that is expected to serve about 1,000 patients per year, said Nikesh Ardeshna M.D., epilepsy services medical director.

Take-Home Opioid OD Kit Helps MAT Patients, Their Communities
But financial and institutional barriers limit distribution of naloxone kits
