Lakehead University: Formally Adopts the Okanagan Charter
Media Release

Lakehead University is placing the health and well-being of students, faculty and staff at the forefront with the formal adoption of the Okanagan Charter: An International Charter for Health Promoting Universities and Colleges.

The Charter was signed on Wednesday by Dr. Moira McPherson, Lakehead's President and Vice-Chancellor, during a special event held at the University's Thunder Bay campus, and by Principal Dr. Dean Jobin-Bevans, at the University's Orillia campus.

An outcome of the 2015 International Conference on Health Promoting Universities and Colleges, the Charter calls on post-secondary institutions to embed health and well-being into all aspects of campus culture, including the development of policies, procedures and practices.

This commitment to student, faculty and staff health and well-being inside and outside of the classroom is an essential element of the University's 2018-2023 Strategic Plan.

"We recognize that promoting health and well-being is necessary to achieving our vision of providing a transformative university experience, which is why Lakehead University has taken the step to adopt the Okanagan Charter," explained Dr. McPherson.

"Exceptional scholarship and student potential are sustained by the mental and physical health of our people, and a healthy and supportive campus environment. We want to embed this notion into all aspects of campus culture and across operations," she added.

As part of the adoption of the Charter, Lakehead University has committed to developing a comprehensive, campus-wide Wellness Strategy that will support, encourage and inspire a culture of health and well-being for all who study and work at the university.

Andrea Tarsitano, Vice-Provost (Students) and Registrar, is co-lead of the newly formed Wellness Advisory Committee that will be leading the development of the strategy.

"Our goal is to promote the idea that health and wellness isn't just the responsibility of one particular department, but that advancing health and wellness needs to be a commitment across all disciplines and departments within our university community," she said.

"There will be many opportunities for students, faculty and staff to get involved and provide their visions of what a healthy campus looks like."

Consultations for Lakehead University's Wellness Strategy will begin in the coming months.

More information about the Okanagan Charter can be found at www.healthpromotingcampuses.ca.

Elder Gerry Martin signs the Okanagan Charter at Lakehead Thunder Bay while Dr. Moira McPherson, Lakehead's President and Vice-Chancellor, watches.

Principal Dr. Dean Jobin-Bevans signs the Okanagan Charter with Elana Weber, Student Wellness and Athletics Coordinator, on the Orillia campus.

Attend this drop-in style PIC to review and comment on the options and alternatives for the City's Transportation Master Plan (TMP) update and to discuss the project further with the study team.

The upcoming PIC is a follow-up to the successful Orillia Transportation Survey recently completed as part of the public consultation process. With more than 800 responses received, the survey provided valuable feedback to inform the development of options and alternatives for consideration.

Details regarding the results of the survey are available online for review prior to the PIC at orillia.ca/tmp .

Annie, the Cinderella of her family, is the live-in caretaker of her demanding mother. In desperate need of a break, Annie's brother and his wife come to visit for a weekend so Annie can take a short trip to recharge. She is secretly planning to rendezvous with her sister Ruth's husband, Norman, for the first time - but Norman arrives at the house much earlier than planned, and everyone ends up stuck together for the whole weekend!

A hilarious look at the absurdity and pathos in contemporary domestic life. Spend a weekend in the country with Norman, his in-laws, and one very dysfunctional family!

While this comedy is part of a trilogy, The Norman Conquests, each play is self-contained and can be watched in any order.

Shows run from April 4th to 14th at the Orillia Opera House Studio Theatre, and tickets are on sale now!

Back by popular demand, music will be provided by the Jazz Byrds!  Enjoy the sophisticated harmony and tasteful improvisations that will contribute to the ambiance of the night. Myrelle Byrd, flute, and John Weston, guitar, have been working and playing together since 2011. Their partnership began when they first provided music for a wedding. Realizing they had diverse backgrounds in music that were compatible, decided to continue honing their arrangements and sound.

2019 is OMAH's 20th anniversary of the amalgamation of the Orillia Historical Society and the Sam Steele Art Gallery. We are proud to present The Mariposa Gala in support of Orillia Museum of Art & History's children and youth programs. We will be joined again by sommelier and certified fromager Andre Derrick from Vineland Estates Winery. He will choose a selection Vinelands wines and fine Canadian cheeses to complement the culinary creations by some of our local food purveyors. There will also be live entertainment during the event. Transportation options to be provided by Hammond.

With your help, our goal is to expand our community outreach in partnership with local and regional charities by providing transportation, meals and opportunities for children and youth to participate in programming that would otherwise not be available to them. These specialized programs support children's development and youth's portfolio development for admission to post-secondary education.

The Lounge Gallery

Kelli Dove's animal series, painted in oils on paper, is a glimpse of her close encounters with animals as a child in the Kawarthas. Each animal holds a memory and a story. She has reimagined them in a way that suits their personalities. There is some influence from their behaviours and how we, as Canadians, perceive them. Each painting demonstrates Dove's strong technical skills and her influence of pop culture.

Kelli Dove (b. 1977) grew up in Bobcaygeon, Ontario. In 1999, she received a Diploma in Fine Arts from the School of Design and Visual Arts, Georgian College. She had the privilege of studying with Ted Fullerton, John Hartman, Tim Zuck, and Laura Millard. Dove primarily paints portraits, many of which are in collections throughout Canada and the United States as well as in the private residence of the former prime minister of Bermuda.

City of Orillia: Provide Feedback on Orillia's Backyard Hen Pilot Project
Ongoing

Orillia's backyard chicken/hen coop pilot project will end on June 5, 2019. The City of Orillia wants to hear your feedback on the pilot project and potential next steps through a short survey available at  orillia.ca/backyardhens .

In May 2017, following much public interest and to foster local food production, Council approved awarding of up to 12 hen coop licenses permitting backyard chickens in Orillia on a two-year trial basis, with certain restrictions including flock size and property area. The purpose of the two-year pilot project was to gather additional data so that Council could decide whether to permit backyard hens on a permanent basis.

"As the City of Orillia backyard hen pilot project winds down, we want to gather feedback from the public regarding the success of the pilot and how you would like the City to proceed," said Mayor Steve Clarke. "This initiative was championed by residents eager to bring backyard hens to Orillia. We now want to connect back with the community to see if that desire remains."

During the pilot project, there have been three licensed backyard coops housing hens in the city. Throughout the pilot, staff conducted both scheduled and random inspections on the existing coops and did not note any major issues or complaints.

Before reporting back to Council Committee regarding next steps, the City is looking for feedback from the general public, but in particular those residents who expressed interest in having backyard hens, but who did not participate in the pilot project, and from residents who have active hen coops in the city.

The online survey is available at  https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/MNBFHDW You can also forward your comments by email to Ali Chapple, Intermediate Planner, at  [email protected] ,  or to Susan Votour, Planning Coordinator, at  [email protected] , or by mail addressed to "Backyard Hens" care of City Centre, 50 Andrew St. S., Suite 300, Orillia, Ontario L3V 7T5. Deadline for feedback is March 18, 2019 at 4:30 p.m.

Currently, the number of hens in a coop is limited to four hens over the age of four months.  Roosters are prohibited and a property must be at least 500 sq. m. (5,382 sq. ft.) in size to accommodate a hen coop. There are also restrictions regarding the location of the hen coop on a property and a licensing fee of $100 is required. Staff are looking for feedback regarding the current regulations (a full copy of which can be found at  orillia.ca/backyardhens .)

The City of Orillia looks forward to receiving your feedback.
