Summer Reading is here and it rocks!
When kids sign up, they receive a reading folder to keep track of books they are reading or books being read to them. Teens receive a reading folder to keep track of their reading and suggested activities. As Library Director Rachel Collins shares below, summer reading is about more than books - it's about keeping brains sharp in between school years.
We believe reading is its own reward, but to add a little more motivation, kids and teens who return a complete reading folder to the library between July 5 and August 12 will receive a reward packet of tickets, coupons, and small prizes. Stone Soup Shakespeare returns!
Stone Soup Shakespeare uses Shakespeare's original text in full, but makes their performances highly accessible through costumes, music and more.

Libraries Rock! Get Hands-on with Musical Instruments
Touch a trombone, view a viola, and say hello to an oboe at our all-ages instrument petting zoo presented by Brass Bell Music on
Thursday, June 14 at 2:30 PM. If you or your child is curious about learning how to play an instrument, this is a great place to start. All ages can come strum the strings and beat the drums!
Children under 6 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Tween Coding Club - Level Up!
Is your tween ready to take the next step in learning how to code? Dive
deeper into the world of Ozobots - robots you make work through code - with new challenges. Tween Coding Club Ozobots Level 2 will be Tuesdays June 11, 18 at 25 from 1:00-2:00 PM and attendance is required at all three sessions. (Each week participants will build upon learning from previous weeks.) Participants must have completed the Ozobots Level 1 workshop at the Shorewood Public Library during 2017 or 2018.

Summer Reading Success
I remember some of the summer reading folders from my youth; particularly a Milwaukee Bucks folder. I earned basketball stickers that resulted in a slam dunk by the end of summer!
Summer reading is about more than just signing up for the reading program, getting your folder and having access to books.
Research shows that picking books that match a child's reading ability
and interest are required to improve reading skills. And then adults are needed to ask and answer questions about the content to improve a child's reading comprehension. It's this combination of access, appropriate books, and adult engagement that lead to summer reading success and keep kids on track for the next school year.

When you think of summer reading in Shorewood, you may think of the popular library programs which encourage children of all ages to enjoy books and participate in fun activities throughout the summer.
Summer reading in Shorewood, however, is also for adults. We encourage adults to enjoy reading all summer and hope that you will have some time to sit down with an good book!
The Friends of the Library Board takes a break from meetings in the summer which means we have more time to read. Check out our reading suggestions on this month's blog and read with us!
