Two weeks.
It is amazing how quickly this summer has flown by. As of Monday, July 30th we only have two full weeks remaining in the summer break. Next week we are hosting our Welcome Back Bears events: a special session for each grade level (please see schedule below). Our sports teams are also gearing up for fall tryouts.
I hope our Bears have not forgotten about their summer reading assignments. The expectations are reiterated again below and if yet to start, now would be the time. We want all of our students to be ready to go on Monday, August 13th.
Finally, please take note of the free back-to-school immunizations taking place this week as well as the annual back-to-school sales tax holiday courtesy of the Florida Dept. of Revenue in early August.

If not yet started, we encourage our returning Bears to begin as classes resume on Monday, August 13th!
As an example, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie is one of nine titles incoming 10th grade English II and English Honors II students may choose from for their summer reading. These sophomores are expected to complete two books from the list over the summer break. (IB and AP students have their own specific summer requirements.)

U.S. Navy Junior ROTC
Congratulations to our eight JROTC cadets recently graduated from Leadership Academy in St. Petersburg Florida on June 23rd (pictured at the very top of this issue). Leadership Academy is a week-long, grueling training event involving physical fitness, marching, military drills, water survival, naval traditions, and classroom instruction.
Graduating cadets were
Angelo Wright, Marvin Velazquez, Sophia Marrero, Bryanna Aponte, Adan Loza, Danielle Witham, Yanfernan Lopez-Perez, and
Austin Jones. These cadets will use the skills they learned at Leadership Academy to assume the key leadership roles in the JROTC Regiment during the upcoming school year.

Valentina Salerno carved out time from their summer to volunteer at the Ronald McDonald and Arnold Palmer House. They pitched in by cooking lunches for the families staying there. #BearsGiveBack

CCHS Medical Academy students
Valentina Salerno, Jaylis Figueroa, Rihanna Aydin, Leilani Harries, Sara Lagmis, Kiara Gomez, and their teacher
Ms. Paulk spent a week at the UCF College of Medicine's Health Leaders Summer Academy. Medical staff assigned them a case study to research, with the help of 1st year medical students throughout the week. Sara and Leilani were among those selected to present to medical faculty and medical students for the closing ceremony.

Three of our Bears just completed a dynamic summer program centered on financial literacy and stability.
Crispin Alemnka, Xiomara Montes Gil, and Kiara Velazquez from our Business Academy participated in a six-week summer internship with Florida Prosperity Partnership (FPP), titled the "Bright Minds, Fresh Ideas" Program.
The students had the opportunity to engage in thoughtful discussions, generate ideas with peers on financial literacy, stability topics, and conduct research on financial products, services and consumer habits that impact financial stability. At the end of their internship program, they presented their ideas on their financial literacy research at the "Student Think Tank - End of Summer Symposium."

Friday's Motivational Moment!

A MOST VALUABLE LESSON
 John Erskine learned the most valuable lesson of his life when he was a freshman in high school at the age of fourteen. His piano teacher asked him, "How many times a week do you practice, and how long do you practice each time?"
He told her that he tried to practice once daily for an hour or more.
"Don't do that," she responded. "When you grow up, time won't come in long stretches. Practice in minutes, whenever you can find them - five or ten before school, after lunch, between chores. Spread your practice throughout your day, and music will become part of your life."
Her advice obviously worked. Erskine became a concert pianist who performed with the New York Philharmonic, and he later served as the president of the Juilliard School of Music and director of the Metropolitan Opera Association. He also went on to teach literature at Columbia University and wrote more than forty-five books. His most famous book,
The Private Life of Helen of Troy, was written as commuted by train to Columbia.
