After the sun goes down, the Solar System walk will continue, constellation storytelling and observing
the night sky through telescopes will round out the evening.
This FREE Star Party is hosted by Wake County's American Tobacco Trail park staff, partnering with North Carolina State University's Parks, Recreation and Tourism students, Agape Center for Environmental Education, Wake County Libraries, the Carolina Children's Museum, Girl Scout Troop 7000, Raleigh Astronomy Club and NASA/JPL Solar System Ambassadors. This event will take place on the back field of the White Oak parking area under the stars. All ages and skill levels are welcome. Bring your curiosity, water bottle, chair and/or blanket, your own viewing instrument, if you have one and dress for the weather! There is no rain/cloud date - call the park for weather updates (919-387-2117). If it is not raining but cloudy, all the fun activities before dark will still go as planned.

This month is the NC Science Festival!
Programs scheduled as part of this Festival:

The Science of Fire
Friday, April 5, 3:30 - 5:30 pm;
Free for ages 12 and up
Fire is an important management tool for our longleaf pine forest at Harris Lake County Park. It depends on fire to be a healthy ecosystem. We will start with a Power Point presentation at the office learning how prescribed fires are conducted, what equipment is used, fire safety and the value for wildlife. We will then travel by wagon to our longleaf area to observe a recent burn and regrowth. If conditions permit, we will conduct a demonstration burn in a small contained area.
This will count toward criteria for NCEE Certification.
Space is limited in this program.
Meet at the Park Office
(first right after you enter the park).

Geocaching 101
Friday, April 14
This program is full - you may join the waitlist.

HIstory Hike - Reflections

Long ago, many families lived and worked on what is now Harris Lake County Park. Harvesting crops, tending livestock and carrying out daily chores were a major part of life in this bygone era. On this one-mile hike we will discover the rich history of this land.  Connections will be made between how land is farmed today compared to the early days.  Through engaging tales gathered from interviews of past residents and listening to our OnCell audio tour using a QR code on smart phones, we will take a walk back in time.
