DS JEFF NOTES

Our Denomination is in pain. Intense debates regarding human sexuality and its expressions in church and society continue. I am sure that most proponents of opposing beliefs think they are defending God. Each team seems to choose select parts of God to defend such as holiness or mercy, but not often both. Some people try to calm their anxiety through posturing, politicking, promoting and policing. Trust is at an all-time low; anger toward sisters and brothers is at an all-time high. Name-calling is common and sins against one another are building up to a total break of relationships. To reconcile with one another would mean we give up defending God, and this is too scary for most people.

There is another way to be. Think of the people you've known who've most strongly shown you the love of Christ. These "gems" accepted you, taught you, modeled for you a way to live without bitterness and strife. They did not judge you, but did gently call you to be your best self. They did not speak poorly of other people to you. They did not equivocate on the truths Jesus taught. They did not assume evil intentions based on actions of other people. They did not draw circles around those who only thought like themselves. They sought first to understand rather than to be understood. They cared enough to pray for you to become all God may intend.

What pains me most is the harmful ways many people speak of fellow Christ-followers. What harms my soul is the lashing out, the assumption of meanness and selfishness in someone else's actions. What is really happening is projection: defending oneself against one's own unpleasant impulses by denying their existence while attributing them to others. When I think this is happening, I take note. A person bashing someone else in front of me will soon be bashing me in front of others. That person needs my prayers because inside they are possibly bashing themselves for God.

There is no painless way forward. Please be informed of the facts through denominational news. Please be in fervent prayer, believing God answers us. Please listen to one another. Please refrain from harmful speaking. Please be like the people who have most shown you the love of Christ. I look forward to being with you at Annual Conference session.

The next edition of this eNewsletter comes out on May 22, 2018.  To submit an item for the newsletter, please have it to the district office by May 17th.   Thank you.

The Upper New York (UNY) Communications Ministry Area has recognized that Methodists use as many acronyms as words in conversations and often in written articles. Our policy is to always spell out acronyms first so readers know what we are talking about, but not all publications follow this etiquette. For that reason, we have created the Upper New York Acronym Glossary.

Click here to read the glossary.

Click here to visit our Facebook page-actively engage with fellow Upper New Yorkers about this topic and let us know acronyms we may have missed!

STANDING DESKS! John Wesley wrote: "Those who read or write much, should learn to do it standing; otherwise it will impair their health,"
Other Wesley diet and exercise tips include:
  • Drink lots of water; it's the healthiest of all drinks.
  • Avoid coffee and tea; they elevate anxiety.
  • Exercise, preferably walking, is necessary for good health.
  • Cold baths promote circulation.
  • Exercise on an empty stomach.
  • Go to bed at 9 p.m. and rise at 4 a.m. or 5 a.m.

A Word from Charles Wesley:

Help us to help each other, Lord,
each other's cross to bear;
let each his friendly aid afford,
and feel another's care.
Touched by the lodestone of thy love
let all our hearts agree;
and ever towards each other move,
and ever move towards thee.

NEW - Intensive Course on Charles Wesley at CRCDS

A week long, in-depth study of Charles Wesley's life and thought taught by the Rev. Dr. John Tyson is being offered June 11 through June 15 at Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School, 1100 S. Goodman St., Rochester.

The class will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day. Cost for clergy and alumni auditing the class is $150 and $300 for others.

Charles "the other Wesley," was a major contributor and shaper of the Wesleyan tradition - in terms of his evangelism, hymns, and the challenges of living a happily married life in the midst of the relentless demands of ministry. This examination Charles' work will be set in the context of his life and times and based on a close reading of important primary and secondary resources. Particular attention will be paid to the on-going relevance of his work for contemporary Christian practitioners in the Wesleyan theological tradition.

Go to the CRCDS website for more information or contact Dr. Tyson directly, [email protected].

WHAT IS "MISSION U"?

     Mission u (formerly known as School of Christian Mission) was created by Methodist women in the early-20th century in order to educate women and inspire them to a sense of mission at home and around the world.  The United Methodist Women remain dedicated to the planning and promotion of this program.
     The schools were formed by and for women but over the years the demographic has changed as men, children and youth take advantage of this rich opportunity. In our Upper New York Conference, Mission u is a "cooperative school", sponsored by both Conference United Methodist Women and the churches of our Upper New York Conference.  We welcome women & men and, in the case of the Cazenovia venue, children and youth.
     We offer opportunities for study and fellowship in three different venues, each held on a different weekend in the summer. Each venue has its own special flavor. At Mission u, we grow in understanding of the mission of the church in the current world context as we "learn together for the transformation of the world".  The three studies offered each year cover three aspects: spiritual growth, geographical and social issues.   CLICK HERE for more information.
