MRD News: Thanks for Playing...More Good Stuff to Come!
By Board President Jason Ullmann

I can't believe it has been more than a year and 1/2 since the Community Recreation Center (CRC) opened! It seems like just yesterday we were planning to open the new CRC, but that was already 18 months ago. I can't thank the community enough for the incredible level you have used and supported our new facilities during that time! One of those facilities is the outdoor pool at the Field House, which reopened in May. If you haven't been to the Field House this summer I suggest you drop by and see what it has to offer. You will be amazed to see the number of people using the outdoor pool, especially when you consider that the indoor aquatic facilities at the CRC have remained busy as well.
This tremendous growth in the past two years was made possible by our partnerships with other local entities, such as the City of Montrose, and leveraging revenue generated in Montrose with grant dollars from entities such as Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO), the Colorado Department of Local Affairs (DOLA), the Daniels Fund and others. The MRD continues to pursue those partnerships and grants in order to improve the quality of life in Montrose. To that end, two big projects that the MRD is currently involved with right now include the Connect Trail and the Holly Park and Riverbottom Road projects.
While writing this note I have been thinking about the fact that when we moved to Montrose in 2007 we lived in English Gardens and our children ranged in age from 18 months to 6 years. At that time we wished that there was an underpass of Townsend Ave. so that our family could safely access Riverbottom and Cerise Parks. Thanks to a partnership with the City and a $2,000,000 Connect Trail grant from GOCO, design is currently underway for an underpass of Townsend Ave. at Dry Cedar Creek, an underpass of Main St. at the Uncompahgre River, and 2.25 miles of trail extension. This project is a huge improvement for the community, but benefits the MRD directly by providing a safe connection for pedestrians and cyclists to the CRC.
Holly Park has needed renovation at least since we moved here 11 years ago. Rather than simply putting together a project that would only renovate Holly Park, the MRD and the City have again partnered to jointly design and apply for a DOLA grant that would enable the MRD to renovate Holly Park and the City to widen Riverbottom Drive to improve traffic congestion during the many events. It will also provide a grand entrance to the many components of the beautiful Baldridge Regional Park. Thank you to all those that stopped by the displays and offered comment at the public open house on June 27 th as it provided great ideas to incorporate into the design. If you missed it, you can see the design plans in the CRC lobby.
I hope you are looking forward to these future improvements as much as I am and thank you for continuing to support the MRD by using our existing facilities and participating in the myriad of activities you will find in this guide!

MRD FitZone

Fit Zone Spotlight on Mat Pilates

Come beat the afternoon heat by participating in MRD Fit Zone's newest group fitness class - Mat Pilates. Pilates is comprised of movements that were created to maximize balance, stability, safety and efficiency of movement. The movements done in Pilates are designed to make you aware of the deep muscles that are close to or attached to the central skeletal structure as well as to awaken movement in areas of the body that have shut down.

By learning how to engage and move from this deeper center, the body will learn to maintain stabilization for even the most powerful of movements. Whether you're involved in vigorous activities, or engaged in the movements of everyday life, practicing Pilates will:

* Improve balance and posture
* Reduce strain on certain over-used muscles
* Lessen risk of injury
* Lessen fatigue and soreness when doing any activity
* improve synchronicity of movement through the kinetic chain of the body.

Mat Pilates is offered in the Fit Zone at 4:15pm on Thursday afternoons. Come participate and stretch, strengthen, and tone your entire body as well as build functional core strength.

Fitness Instructors and Substitute Instructors Needed

MRD is still in need of certified fitness instructors to instruct or substitute instruct multiple different class formats including Spinning, TRX, Strength & Conditioning, Mat Pilates, and Zumba. If you are a certified instructor or are interested in becoming certified, please contact John Wagner (970) 497-8565 to discuss potential openings and available class times.

Summer Adventures

The MRD Summer Enrichment Program, recipients of a 2018 NRPA Rural Communities
Healthy Out-of-School Time Grant for $35,000

At the beginning of the this summer, the Montrose Recreation District's (MRD) Summer Enrichment Program received notice the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) that it was the recipient of a 2018 Rural Communities Healthy Out-of-School Time Programs Grant. The award was for $35,000! On March 30, 2018, the MRD was informed that it had been selected to be one of ten rural communities, in Colorado, Kansas and Mississippi, to receive grant funding. This grant has supported efforts around increasing access to meals, providing nutritional education and implementing healthy living practices and policies.

The MRD Summer Enrichment Program, continues to be a staple summer youth program, dating back to the summer of 2001. The Summer Enrichment Program provides children, ages 6 - 14 years old, a variety of opportunities and experiences. These include outdoor recreation activities, indoor and outdoor games, arts and crafts projects, sports activities, fitness and wellness, educational and nutrition literacy activities, field trips and much, much more!

Many new partnerships and services have come about, dating back to the efforts of the original 21 st Century Community Learning Center Program. In 2018, the Montrose Recreation District partnered with the Black Canyon Gymnastics Day Camp, MES Summer Discovery Camp and Weehawken Creative Arts, in an effort to provide an opportunity for all-day summer programming and activities for our Montrose and surrounding area families, and their children! Due largely to these partnerships, our Summer Enrichment Program enrolled an average of 85 kids, in each of its two sessions, which is a substantial increase from years past!

This summer, the Montrose County School District, has once again provided the FREE Summer Nutritional Lunch Program, which is affiliated with the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), at the same location as our Summer Enrichment Program, Pomona Elementary School. The school district has also provided their free Summer Nutritional Lunch Program at another MRD facility this summer, the MRD Field House / Outdoor Pool facility. This has greatly supported the recreation district and NRPA's effort and goal around increasing access to nutritious meals to our Montrose area youth!

The Montrose Recreation District and MRD Summer Enrichment Staff would like to express their gratitude to NRPA and the Wal-mart Foundation and the Re-1J Summer Nutritional Lunch Program (SFSP) for their partnership and support, surrounding efforts to increase access to healthy meals and snacks, providing nutrition education and implementing healthy eating habits and living practices for our Montrose area children and their families!
