Make sure to join us for worship this weekend, when our music team will present special music at each service!

Rector's Ramblings

Given that I've been sharing Matthew Sleeth's teaching on Sabbath with the congregation this month, when I realized that I have done a terrible job keeping Sabbath myself this month, I realized I had to do something about it. June has been a tremendous month in terms of ministry and goings on, and I simply haven't had time to stop moving since I got back from vacation after Memorial Day.

Special Music in Worship - June 23 and 24
Be sure to join us this weekend, June 23, for worship at St. Ignatius Chapel, at 5:30 pm, or on June 24, at the 8:00, 9:15 or 11:15 am services at Christ Church, to hear some very special music that our X Choir will be presenting later this summer at the Episcopal General Convention, in Austin, Texas. Music Director, Kathleen Turner gives the details below.

(Click here for a sneak peak of the music inserts for 5:30 pm, 8:00 am, 9:15 am and 11:15 am.)

Greeting Christ Church Parish!

We have been asked several very good questions about General Convention this summer and my/our role in it. So here is a more detailed explanation of what, where, when, etc.

The Music Team for the General Convention consists of three people:
Scott Chard -  (Oklahoma City, OK) is the Praise Ensemble Director at St. Augustine of Canterbury Episcopal Church. He is the Artistic Director, chosen by Presiding Bishop Michael Curry to lead the music for the Convention.
Jean Fuller -  (Austin, TX) is the Organist/Choirmaster at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church. She is the Consulting/Contracting Manager for the Music Team.
(Kathleen) serve as the Managing Director, helping with details, deadlines, and communication.

In March of 2017, I was asked to send a CD of the XChoir for consideration, an "audition" if you will. We have known we were in strong consideration, and learned earlier this year that we were a part of the team. Our team representing XChoir from Christ Church includes Misty Renard-Laskowsky, Trina Meade, Te Turner, Tom Purdy, Michael Hulett, George Ingram, and Chris Turner. Eva Purdy will join us for selected services. I'm recruiting alumni from the Austin Children's Choir and securing a few other children in Austin to participate as well.

(XChoir is the ensemble that offers music for XChurch, the seasonal Wednesday evening contemplative service. X representing Christ in Greek. Some folks not aware of XChurch associate XChoir with the XBox and video games).

Music is being handled a bit differently at this convention.  The new approach to offering music at liturgies for the 79th General Convention is a team effort where the musicians involved work together on the music for each service rather than one isolated group taking a service per day.

There are eight liturgies, one per day, each with a certain focus:
Thursday, July 5
Opening Eucharist
Friday, July 6
Procession of Bishops and Holy Eucharist
Saturday, July 7
Revival
Sunday, July 8
Holy Eucharist
Monday, July 9
Eucharist with a theme of Reconciliation
Tuesday, July 10
Eucharist with a theme of Creation Care
Wednesday, July 11
Eucharist on the Feast Day of Benedict of Nurcia
(Fr. Tom will be offering Gregorian Chant on this day)

I'd like to say that every member of every choir at Christ Church is an asset to the music of our liturgies. I am blessed to serve each and every member, regardless of age or ensemble. That said, I must add there is room for YOU as well!

All my best,
Kathleen Turner

Summer Programs for Youth and Children

Vacation Bible School - NEW Photos!

Christ Church's Rolling River Rampage VBS invited children on a white-water rafting adventure to experience the ride of a lifetime with God! Along the river, children discovered that life with God is an adventure full of wonder and surprise, and that they can trust God to be with them through anything. The energetic music, exciting science experiments, creative crafts, awesome games, yummy snacks, and memorable Bible stories helped reiterate that God is always with us. Thank you to the many volunteers who made this year's Vacation Bible School a success.  From your donations of food, décor, and time; you helped 50 children and youth learn to ride the rapids of this grace-filled journey of life with Christ! Check out all the pictures from this exciting week of VBS here.

CCF Clean-Up Day

CTCT-20180616_084148_0
This past Saturday, June 16, 2018, a group of volunteers gathered early in the morning with a difficult mission: to further beautify the already beautiful Christ Church building. For some volunteers, this meant painting the front exterior of the Church. For others, it meant a deep cleaning of the Church's interior. All of the volunteers, no matter where they chose to serve, contributed generously of their time and energy - and it shows! The Church was shining on Sunday morning. On behalf of the Wardens and Vestry of Christ Church, Frederica, great thanks to all who were a part of this effort!  Click here to see more photos of all the helpful hard workers!

X Choir Goes West Fundraiser
Wow! What a great event we had last Friday, June 15, at the TreeBar at Bennie's Red Barn, despite the downpour. Thank you to everyone who donated silent auction items, purchased and sold tickets, and cheered on our performers. Many thanks Michael, Trina and Misty for offering their talent. And a huge thank-you goes to George Ingram who offered his talent and took the lead in putting together the entire evening. The event brought in between $4000 - $5000 towards our journey to Austin, Texas for the Episcopal General Convention in July. To God be the Glory!

Best,
Kathleen

Icon Writing 3.0 at Christ Church
Fr. David Holland returns for the third consecutive year for our annual workshop. Fr. David Holland has been teaching icon writing for over 25 years and has never had anyone not finish an icon. No previous artistic ability is needed. Participants may choose one of the two icons to work on during the week.

Icon writing is much more than learning to paint an icon; a painting depicting Jesus, Mary, angels or saints. Orthodox Christians consider making icons more a form of prayer than art, and believe the writer's hand is guided by God as s/he writes in paint. Each brush stroke is a meditative act. Those who have painted icons describe the experience as deeply spiritual and faith-enhancing.

Icon Writing 3.0 is Sunday, Aug 26 through Friday, Aug 31.  The worship is limited to 16 people, so please register soon. We will meet from 2:00 pm to 7:00 pm daily in the Parish Hall. The only thing you need to bring is a willing spirit and a snack, if you would like. Fr. David furnishes all materials and instruction. On Sunday, August 26, our icons will be blessed during the Sunday morning services. The cost for the workshop is $425. To register, call the church office at 912-638-8683 . For more information, contact Mtr. Becky at  Becky@ccfssi.org   or give her a call.

An Interfaith Journey to the Holy Lands: Relationship, Understanding, and Community Harmony

Join Rev. Tom Purdy, Rabbi Rachel Bregman, and Rev. Alan Dyer as they lead an interfaith journey to the Holy Land with Medji Tours in June 2019. This once in a lifetime trip aims to build relationships across cultural and religious lines in our community by exploring together the shared roots of our traditions in Israel and Jordan. Additionally, this interfaith journey hopes to begin a longer-term process of continuing to form relationships, deepen understanding, and build community across other faith organizations in Glynn County, Georgia upon our return. This trip is open to any and all who would like to participate in this holy work. For more information, click here.
