Medical Fact
 "I didn't know that!

Whooping cough was first recognized in the Middle Ages. Jules Bordet and Octave Gengou isolated Bordetella pertussis, a causative agent for whooping cough, in Paris more than 100 years ago. In 1914 the whole-cell pertussis vaccine was invented, then in the 1940s it was combined with tetanus and diphtheria toxoids to become DTP and became widely available. The vaccine has proved to be 80% effective in preventing serious disease and death from pertussis.

Spring officially arrived March 20th. The weather might seem otherwise, but if you look closely, there are blooming flowers and grass pushing through the ground. Spring is a great time for renewal and new found energy.

In this month's newsletter, we share a heartwarming story of the similarities between a baby in utero and post-birth. We discuss the increase in whooping cough and what might be the cause. In addition, we recognize Autism Awareness Month and how you can find out more and get involved.  In our Healthy Living section, a new study suggests short bursts of exercise can have the same benefits to your health.  And,  you'll find a new interesting "Medical Fact".

The Miracle of Childbirth childbirth
This miraculous photo was captured on Reddit of a 3-week-old baby who continues to sleep in the same position as his 3D/4D ultrasound.

Baby Michael is referred to as the "king of taking it easy" - with his signature laid-back pose that he started in utero.

Mom Sarah was excited to be able to see her baby's face and positioning at 38 weeks pregnancy. Apparently, that position has stayed with him post-birth and continues to be his place of comfort.

3D/4D ultrasounds are available at The Rubino OB/GYN Group. Please call our office to schedule an appointment: 973-736-1100
Is Whooping Cough Making A Comeback? Whoopingcough
Pertussis, also known as  whooping cough, is a highly contagious respiratory disease caused by the bacterium Bordetella pertussis.

Pertussis is known for uncontrollable, violent coughing which often makes it hard to breathe. After cough fits, someone with pertussis often needs to take deep breaths, which result in a "whooping" sound. Pertussis can affect people of all ages, but can be very serious, even deadly, for babies less than a year old. Children are more susceptible than adults.

According to The New York Times, "The respiratory illness induces such powerful, uncontrollable fits of coughing that older patients may break a rib or burst capillaries in the eyes. Children may have seizures. Babies, who cannot cough that hard, can stop breathing and die.

Whooping cough nearly disappeared after a vaccine, a combination of
diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis, was  invented in the 1940's.

Whooping cough seems to be making a comeback, even though most children are vaccinated. I mmunity provided by the vaccine can start to decrease after two years and stops completely by  10 years .

Between the years 2012 and 2014, there was a spike in the number of whooping cough outbreaks.

A recent study from California confirms what earlier reports have suggested: that the newer pertussis vaccine, [introduced in the 1990's] reformulated to be safer and have fewer side effects than the older version, just isn't as effective." H owever, there is no rush to return to the older pertussis vaccine, as it had significant downsides.

Vaccines overall for many conditions dropped in the 90's after a fraudulent study in the British medical journal, The Lancet, was published linking vaccines to autism. The article has since been retracted and Andrew Wakefield, its author, was stripped of his medical license.

The best way to protect against pertussis is for infants to get 4 does of the DTaP (combo of diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis) by 18 months of age.  Children between the ages of 7 and 10 should be vaccinated if they have not yet received the vaccine.

If adults have never been vaccinated, it is recommended to get the Tdap booster.  Pregnant women should get the Tdap booster even if they were previously vaccinated.

Note: The DTaP vaccine  helps children younger than age 7 develop immunity to the three deadly diseases caused by bacteria: diphtheria, tetanus, and whooping cough (pertussis). Tdap  is a booster immunization given at age 11+ that offers continued protection from those diseases for adolescents and adults.
Recognizing Autism Awarenessautism
You may notice the color blue lighting up your town in recognition of Austism Awareness Month.

A widely recognized organization, Autism Speaks, dedicates it's efforts to promoting solutions, across the spectrum and throughout the lifespan, for the needs of individuals with autism and their families through advocacy and support.

They define autism, or autism spectrum disorder, as "a range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication, as well as by unique strengths and differences. There is not one autism but many types, caused by different combinations of genetic and environmental influences."

Their purpose is to increase the understanding and acceptance of people with autism spectrum disorder; and advancing research into causes and better interventions for autism spectrum disorder and related conditions.

Short Bursts of Exercise Can Reduce Risk Healthyliving
Source: ABC News

A new study by researchers at the National Cancer Institute and the National Institutes of Health question whether the national exercise guidelines need to change.

Watch the video.

"Researchers followed almost 5,000 people over the age of 40 for more than six years. They considered the people in two groups: Those who had bouts of exercise approximately five minutes in length, and those whose exercise lasted more than 10 minutes.

Getting about 60 minutes per day of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity cut the risk of death over the time period by half, while getting about 100 minutes per day cut the risk to approximately 75 percent -- and it was the total time moving, not the length of exercise that mattered.

The new study finds that the length of each bout or episode of exercise is unrelated to the benefit seen in living longer. Five minutes of jogging, researchers said, "counts" toward better health.
