The Altar Curtain in the
Armenian Church
|
During Great Lent, the altar curtain remains closed in the Armenian Church to symbolize man's expulsion from the Garden of Eden and to emphasize the spirit of repentance and forbearance characterizing the 40-day period preceding Holy Week. Many churches replace the traditional altar curtain with dark and simple drapery bearing little or no embroidery.

Two Doctors and Their Dedication to the Families of Rural Armenia
In addition to running Ayrum Medical Center, Dr. Gandzapar Saratikyan and his wife, Dr. Marusya Yeghishyan, have been professional partners for the past 29 years. Since 1990, both have worked relentlessly to provide comprehensive healthcare in their Tavush Province hometown.
The only family doctors in Ayrum, Gandzapar and Marusya at one point had to walk miles and miles or travel by horseback to get to patients in need; they've become accustomed to working 24/7 without relief. In 2016, the two were accepted into FAR's Continuing Medical Education (CME) program for comprehensive training in pediatrics, an area where both of them felt they needed more knowledge about the latest approaches and methods of treatment. "The real doctor is not one who just understands his/her patients and their concerns, but also the one who tries to make a difference in the community, in patients' lives, and in the healthcare system," says Gandzapar. Sunday of the Unjust Steward Jesus' parable about an unjust steward who was accused of cheating his master (Luke 16:1-17-the reading for Sunday, March 4) is famous for being difficult to understand. But it gives very concrete clues about what it means to be a "good steward."
The steward is a figure who comes up in many of Jesus' parables-a "stock character," we might say, who would have been very recognizable to Christ's listeners. What did stewards do, in the time of Jesus? What made them so interesting to our Lord?

Մեծ Պահքի չորրորդ կիրակին կոչվում է Տնտեսի, ըստ այդ օրվա խորհուրդը բացատրող անիրավ տնտեսի մասին առակի: Այն հիշատակում է միայն Ղուկաս ավետարանիչը, որի բովանդակությունը հետևյալն է: Մի մեծահարուստ իմանում է, որ տնտեսը վատնում է իր ունեցվածքը, կանչում է նրան եւ հաշիվ պահանջում, որոշում հեռացնել աշխատանքից: Տնտեսը հասկանում է, որ կարող է անգործ մնալ, խորամանկության է դիմում: Նա կանչում է տիրոջ պարտապաններին, նրանց շնորհում իրենց ունեցած պարտքի մի մասը: Եվ այս ամենից հետո տերը գովում է տնտեսին` հնարամտությամբ վարվելու համար: Առաջին հայացքից թվում է, թե հակասություն կա այս գովեստի մեջ: Բայց անիրավ տնտեսը պարտապաններին շնորհում է այն, ինչն ավելիով գրել էր իր օգտին` պարտքի շնորհումով` ոչ մի վնաս չպատճառելով իր տիրոջը: Տերը գովում է տնտեսին` իր հասանելիք շահույթից հրաժարվելու համար: Այսինքն` հույժ գովելի է հրաժարումը, որն էլ հենց պահքի իմաստն է:
Պահքը մարդուն որեւէ գայթակղությունից հրաժարվելու ունակություն է սովորեցնում, հրաժարում, որից սկսվում է ինքնազսպումը կամ անձի ուրացումը: Քրիստոս ասում է. «Եվ ով իր խաչը չի վերցնում ու Իմ ետևից չի գալիս, Ինձ արժանի չէ» (Մատթ. 10:38): Այս առակը հորդորում է յուրաքանչյուրին հրաժարվելով և ինքնազսպմամբ հասնել փրկության: Առակի այլաբանական իմաստն այս է: Հարուստ մարդը խորհրդանշում է Աստծուն, անիրավ տնտեսը` մեղավորին, որը երկար ժամանակ անհոգ կերպով վատնում էր Աստծո տված շնորհները, մինչեւ որ Աստված նրան պատասխանատվության է կանչում: Անիրավ տնտեսը խորհրդանշում է այն բոլոր մարդկանց, ովքեր զղջում են, ներում իրենց պարտապանների պարտքերը եւ սիրելի դառնում հրեշտակներին ու արդարներին:

Saintly Women's Day
Our annual Saintly Women's Day celebration will take place on Saturday, March 23 at 11:00 am. Please join our Women's Guild members and community to honor three women from the Holy Gospels: the woman who touched Jesus' cloak, the woman who anointed Jesus' head at Bethany and the Syrophoenician woman.
Our guest speaker this year is
Prof. Robin Darling Young, Ph.D. She is an associate professor of theology and religious studies at the Catholic University of America. Prof. Darling Young is a prominent scholar of Early Christianity and History of Christianity, Christian Theology and Spirituality, Christianity in the East/Middle East, Monasticism, Orthodox Churches and Ecumenical Relations. The topic of her presentation will be: "Women Saints in the Narratives of Early Christian Armenia".

Our ACYOA
Juniors
held their annual lock in at St. Mary Chrch on March 15-16. The event was both fun and
spiritually
fulfilling for our youth. Thirteen Junior members gathered for activities, games and spiritual connection, facilitated by Ms. Becky Bagdasarian, Mr. Eric Ashbahian and Mr. Daron Bedrosian. In the evening they
participated
in a beautiful peace service led by Der Hovsep. Der Hayr also gave them a message and
explained
the purpose of the Lenten
period
in our church, it's true meaning and how to
effectively
keep the Lent in their hearts and minds.
The teens enjoyed pizza and snacks while they played games and relished in one another's company before returning home on
Saturday morning. Special thanks to Ms. Becky Bagdasarian and Mr. Zaven Kalayjian for
chaperoning overnight.

Visit to Baltimore Armenian School
On Saturday, March 16, Der Hovsep Karapetyan was a guest speaker at the Armenian School of Greater Baltimore (ASGB). He spoke with the students and their families about the Christian faith, the Armenian church, and the Lenten season as we prepare for Easter.
The children made 'stained glass' crafts, learned the proper way to greet a Der Hayr ("Orhnetsek Der Hayr" to which Der Hayr responds "Asdevats Orhneh"), and received small crosses from Jerusalem and 2019 Armenian Church Family Lenten Calendar, with ideas, activities, and Scripture readings for a meaningful Great Lent.
ASGB holds Eastern Armenian language and culture classes for students Pre-k through grade 10. Classes meet on Saturdays from 10:00 am - 12:30 pm in Linthicum, MD. For more information contact [email protected].

Lenten Service, Discussion and Dinner Series 2019
The third presentation of a six night series took place on Wednesday, March 20. Parishioners and friends came together for a worship service, spiritual presentation and dinner with this year's theme entitled "Leading to Easter: Searching the Soul". The topic concentrates on the journey through Lent meditating on the last three chapters of the Gospel of Matthew. The season of Lent is a season for searching the soul through the lenses of the people closest to Jesus in His last hours. The last three chapters of Matthew are a juxtaposition of stories.
Mr. Avedis Seferian gave a meditation on "how at the hour of crisis, our hope is in prayer", concentrating on the verses found in Matthew 26:31-46. He led the audience through the story of Jesus' extraordinary and costly victory in the Garden of Gethsemane and the extraordinary failure of his disciples in that same dark hour.
Toward the end of the service and presentation the parishioners enjoyed each others fellowship and dinner hosted and sponsored by the ACYOA Juniors.

"Leading to Easter: Searching the Soul"
Please join us Wednesdays during Lent for prayer service, spiritual discussion, and dinner.
This year we will journey through Lent meditating on the last three chapters of the Gospel of Matthew.
The season of Lent is a season for searching the soul. As you study Matthew 26-28, you will search your own soul through the lenses of the people closest to Jesus in His last hours. The last three chapters of Matthew are a juxtaposition of stories.
Throughout our journey we will address Communion, Jesus' deserters, His submission to the Father, and His crucifixion. While the theme of rejection runs through these chapters in Matthew, there is good news: joy of the resurrection that you can experience with new eyes.

Patriarch Mesrob II Laid to Rest
In a solemn ceremony at the Sourp Asdvadzadzin Church of the Armenian Patriarchate in Kumkapi, His Beatitude Archbishop Mesrob II Mutafyan, the 84th Armenian Patriarch of Constantinople, received the final anointing on Sunday, March 17, before being laid to rest in the Armenian cemetery in Sisli, Istanbul.
Patriarch Mesrob had passed away on March 8, after a long period of illness, at the city's Sourp Prgich Armenian Hospital.
The funeral was attended by dignitaries from various governments, religious institutions, and sister churches. Condolence messages were read from His Holiness Karekin II, the Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians; from His Holiness Aram I, Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia; and from Pope Francis, pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church, who had visited the ailing Patriarch in the hospital in 2014.
Patriarch Nourhan Manougian of the Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem-where Mutafyan once studied-attended the funeral, among other Armenian Church dignitaries.
Reportedly, with the death of Patriarch Mutafyan, the process of electing an 85th Armenian Patriarch is expected to begin later this year.

Episcopal Ordination Pilgrimage: Places Still Available
Faithful from throughout the Eastern Diocese are planning to travel to Armenia to share in the consecration of our Diocesan Primate, Fr. Daniel Findikyan, as a bishop of the Armenian Church. The splendid ceremony will take place on the weekend of May 11-12, 2019. The sacrament will be conferred by the hand of His Holiness Karekin II, the Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, at Holy Etchmiadzin.
Those wishing to witness the consecration in person can still register to join the special "pilgrimage" to Armenia being sponsored by the Diocese.
The two travel packages on offer arrange for members of the group to take part in the Evening Service on Saturday, May 11; the Divine Liturgy and Ordination on Sunday, May 12; the antranig badarak (inaugural Divine Liturgy) of the newly-ordained Bishop Daniel on Monday, May 13; and a special banquet for American-Armenian pilgrims, in honor of the Primate, on Monday evening.
After his episcopal ordination, the Primate will return to the U.S. to celebrate his first Divine Liturgy as bishop among the faithful of the Eastern Diocese. That service will take place on Saturday, May 18, at New York's St. Vartan Cathedral, beginning at 10 a.m. It will be followed by a reception in the Diocesan Center's Haik and Alice Kavookjian Auditorium.

2019 Diocesan Assembly to Meet in Watertown, MA
The 117th Diocesan Assembly will convene May 2-4, 2019, at the Marriott Hotel in Burlington, MA. The St. James Church of Watertown, MA, will host the Diocesan Assembly, the concurrent Women's Guild Assembly, and the Clergy Conference (meeting April 29-May 1), bringing together hundreds of Armenian Church leaders from the Eastern Diocese. Diocesan Primate the Very Rev. Fr. Daniel Findikyan will preside.
Clergy, Diocesan delegates, and parish council chairs will soon receive notification (via mail and e-mail) regarding registration. Information on the 117th Diocesan Assembly-including online registration and room reservations-will be available on the St. James parish website in the coming weeks.

I am not strong enough to dig, and I am ashamed to beg. 4 I have decided what to do so that, when I am dismissed as manager, people may welcome me into their homes.'5 So, summoning his master's debtors one by one, he asked the first, 'How much do you owe my master?' 6 He answered, 'A hundred jugs of olive oil.' He said to him, 'Take your bill, sit down quickly, and make it fifty.' 7 Then he asked another, 'And how much do you owe?' He replied, 'A hundred containers of wheat.' He said to him, 'Take your bill and make it eighty.' 8 And his master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly; for the children of this age are more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than are the children of light. 9 And I tell you, make friends for yourselves by means of dishonest wealth so that when it is gone, they may welcome you into the eternal homes.
10 "Whoever is faithful in a very little is faithful also in much; and whoever is dishonest in a very little is dishonest also in much. 11 If then you have not been faithful with the dishonest wealth,who will entrust to you the true riches? 12 And if you have not been faithful with what belongs to another, who will give you what is your own? 13 No slave can serve two masters; for a slave will either hate the one and love the other, or be devoted to the one and despise the other. "Որդեա՛կ, յիշի՛ր, որ դու ստացար քո բարիքները այնտեղ, քո կեանքի ընթացքում, իսկ Ղազարոսն էլ՝ չարչարանքները. այժմ սա այստեղ մխիթարւում է, իսկ դու այդտեղ պապակում ես: 26 Եւ այս բոլորից բացի, մեծ վիհ կայ մեր եւ ձեր միջեւ. եթէ ուզենան այստեղից ձեզ մօտ անցնել, չեն կարողանայ. ոչ էլ այդտեղից մէկը կարող է մեզ մօտ անցնել": 27 Մեծահարուստն ասաց. "Արդ, աղաչում եմ քեզ, հա՛յր, որ Ղազարոսին ուղարկես իմ հօր տունը, - 28 որտեղ ես հինգ եղբայրներ ունեմ, - որպէսզի նրանց վկայութիւն տայ, որ նրանք էլ չգան տանջանքների այս վայրը": 29 Եւ Աբրահամն ասաց. "Նրանք ունեն Մովսէս եւ մարգարէներ, թող նրա՛նց լսեն": 30 Եւ նա ասաց. "Ո՛չ, հա՛յր Աբրահամ. բայց եթէ մեռելներից մէկը նրանց մօտ գնայ, նրանք կ՚ապաշխարեն": 31 Եւ Աբրահամը նրան ասաց. "Եթէ Մովսէսին եւ մարգարէներին չեն լսում, մեռելներից մէկն էլ եթէ յարութիւն առնի, չպիտի համոզուեն"»:
