 Middle School Students tackle Marshmallow Challenge
Professor Mark Vesligaj led a M
arshmallow Challenge on November 16. The challenge is based on a TED talk and encourages creativity and team work from the participants. The students from the Bennie Dover Jackson Middle School after-school ENRICH program used spaghetti, masking tape and string to create a tall structure with a marshmallow on top.

Guided Pathways Convening
The Connecticut Student Success Center Convening on Guided Pathways and the Scale of Adoption Assessment brought CSCU campus members together on November 1 at Gateway Community College to learn about the national Guided Pathways movement and the implementation of GPS system wide.

representatives, Director of Technology Kem Barfield, Interim Dean of Academics Dean Jerry Ice and Assistant to the Academic Dean Kacey McCarthy-Zaremba, were able to meet and speak with Jobs for the Future (JFF) representatives who are partnering and guiding the Connecticut Student Success Center through the implementation process.

 Three Rivers joins the Vets Rock Expo
Three Rivers representatives
Deb DiCarlo, Terri DeBarros and Sharon Lincoln staffed a Three Rivers table at the Free Vets Rock Expo at Mohegan Sun on November 3.
The expo provided resources to veterans and was followed by a
concert that benefited the United Service Organizations Connecticut and Veterans Exposition.

President Ojakian addresses Consolidation Concerns
CSCU President Ojakian hosted a WebEx forum for staff and faculty on November 7 and for students on November 8, and both were live-streamed to all 12 community college campuses. Three Rivers students traveled to Capital Community College to participate in the students' forum, which can be watched

Breakfast with the Brass - A Delicious Success

On November 15, the General Education Task Force and the TRC Foundation sponsored Connect and Expand, a mini-conference on portfolios and assessment.
Digication CEO
Jeff Yan, and Elizabeth Keifer of Tunxis Community College presented sessions for faculty and staff. Eva Gregg, a University of Alaska Anchorage student, presented her portfolio remotely from Alaska, sharing her experiences as an Alaskan native. Elizabeth Vantroba, a Three Rivers ECE student, displayed her portfolio and shared a reflective video.

News from Three Rivers College Foundation

LaMattina Family offers support -
The Foundation received an additional $15,000 from the LaMattina family to support a part-time tutor that will provide mostly one-on-one hour-long tutoring sessions for spring 2018.
Funding for Pre-Esol 060 -
The Foundation will also continue funding the "pre-ESOL 060" class at TRCC designed to start-off where Norwich Adult Education courses end so that those students can move seamlessly into the first level of the TRCC ESOL sequence.
Summer Scholarships -
The Foundation provided approximately $46,000 to support a summer pilot program directly aligned with the college-wide Guided Pathways to Success (GPS) initiative, which serves to assist student retention and completion rates using a holistic, student-centered approach.
Ed Muenzner, TRC Foundation's faculty liaison and GPS committee member, reported at the December board meeting that scholarships were provided to 67 students who enrolled in 78 courses. There was a 91% completion rate and an 86% retention rate. Congratulations to the GPS Team!

David Leff Lecture -
On November 15,
essayist and poet David Leff shared the interesting history, technology and community surrounding maple sugaring. His lecture was a part of the Dr. Booker T. DeVaughn Lecture Series.
