Vestry Votes to Support Flood Relief Efforts
|
|
Following the devastating floods experienced during the weekend of April 14
th
, many people and communities on Kaua`i were suddenly in urgent need of the most basic necessities of life including water, food and medicines. All Saints’ Church sought, and received, the approval of Bishop Fitzpatrick to redirect our April 22
nd
“free plate offering” in support of flood relief efforts here on Kaua`i.
The Vestry then approved the following two proposals:
1. “The plate offerings at both services on Sunday, April 22
nd
be redirected to support flood relief efforts here on Kaua`i - food, water, medicines and other living necessities for anyone in need.”
2. “The funds collected through the plate offering this Sunday, April 22
nd
, be redirected to Malama Kaua`i, a well respected charitable organization.”

|
Click the logo below to learn more about Malama Kauai.
|
|
This information was circulated to our immediate Church `Ohana and to our extended `ohana on Kaua`i, the mainland and even overseas.
We are pleased to inform you that our “free plate offering” that Sunday amounted to $2,000 and we have since received additional donations amounting to $600. We also have commitments from friends of the church on the mainland who will be sending contributions by mail.
A donation of $2,600 is being sent immediately to
Malama Kaua`i
“on behalf of the `Ohana and friends of All Saints’ Episcopal Church.” Any additional funds received will also be forwarded to Malama Kaua`i.
Mahalo no kou lokomaikaʻi. (Thank you for your generosity.)

Bishop’s Appeal to Support Christ Memorial Church
|
|
I have received word that Christ Memorial Episcopal Church on Kaua`i (
http://www.christmemorialkauai.org
) is now at a place to receive financial donations for flood relief. Christ Memorial is in Kilauea (2509 Kolo Road) and suffered no damage. The church does have property in Hanalei (the old site of St. Thomas Church) that is leased by the Aloha School Early Learning Center (see
http://www.alohaschoolhanalei.org
). This non-profit preschool suffered significant damage. Christ Memorial also has a thrift shop and hosts a food bank that serves the North Shore of Kaua`i. Both of these ministries are important to the impacted community. Individuals and families related to the congregation were impacted. I encourage congregations to take collections and for individuals to make donations sending the funds directly to Christ Memorial Episcopal Church at:
Christ Memorial Episcopal Church
Attn: Flood Response Fund
P O Box 293
Kilauea, HI 96754
|
|
These funds will be used by the congregation’s priest, the Rev. Gae Chalker, to aid organizations addressing the needs of the community and individuals impacted by the flood. As with all church funds, their use will be reviewed by the Wardens and audited.
Yours faithfully,
+Bob

Kealia Beach Cleanup
|
|
A small but enthusiastic group from All Saints’ met at Kealia Beach Park after Church on April 22 to celebrate Earth Day with a beach cleanup. The recent storm left lots of debris and our crew worked diligently to help with the enormous task of making our beach safe and welcoming again. We spent a large portion of our time making piles with logs, branches, and other plant matter. As we made these piles we uncovered plastic. With the aid of rakes, dip nets, and old fashioned sorting by hand, we filtered out plastic to be removed from the beach. After two hours of work we could see that we made a small dent in returning Kealia to its pre-storm beauty. Many thanks to Wayne Doliente, who also brought water for our thirsty work, Jan Hashizume, Janis Wright, Cheryl Glenn, Ron Morinishi, and CeCe Caldwell for contributing their time to this worthy cause.
For those of you who couldn’t join us - Every time you go to the beach, spend 5 minutes collecting and disposing of garbage before you relax and enjoy yourself. It is an outward and visible sign of your care for God’s creation.

KE AKUA YOUTH GROUP
Our Keiki, Our Future
|
|
After a month of planning, the Ke Akua Youth Group began their weekend of fun and service last Friday. They started their night with Rock-N-Glow Bowling at the Lihue Bowling Alley, followed by a sleepover in the Youth Room at All Saints’ Gym, and taro farming the next day at Kealia Farms.
Originally, the kids planned to help Kealia Farms by providing person-power to beautify the pathways along the fields. Kealia Farm owner “Uncle Adam” had a dream of being able to provide tours to educate visitors about their grassroots traditional sustainability efforts and methods through local farming and the Sunshine Market.
However, due to the severe flooding that struck the Garden Isle the weekend before, the youth were offered a different opportunity that not only helped the local farmers of Kealia, but those in Hanalei, and the people of Niihau.
Uncle Adam informed our youth that Hanalei Taro and Juice Co. usually sends some of their taro harvest to the residents of Niihau - our closest neighbor island. The recent flood crippled Hanalei Taro’s farm so Uncle Adam invited the keiki to help the farmers bring in the crop.
“With the whole process it usually takes about a year to plant, grow, and harvest taro,” said Uncle Adam. To think, Hanalei’s year-long effort could have been lost in a matter of hours.
Although the swiftness of the flood devastated Hanalei, speed was a welcom gift for the Youth Group on Saturday. What would have been (at least) a two-hour job took the youth about 45 minutes to complete. For that, Uncle Adam was incredibly grateful.
With their boots full of mud, our hard-working youth headed back to All Saints’ for a much deserved lunch and a chance to rinse and unwind with water-balloon fights on the front lawn.
Needless to say, they were too tired to do much else Sunday morning. Thus, the Bible Study session that was scheduled for April 22
nd
has been moved to this Sunday, April 29
th
, at 11:00AM in Memorial Hall.
Aunty Cami would like to give all participants in this weekend’s event a big MAHALO for their fellowship and service.

Pastoral Care Ministry
Pastoral Care Team Installations
|
|
In Paul’s letter to the Galatians we hear: “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will follow the law of Christ” (
6:2
). In response Rev. Ryan invited a few leaders to participate in a newly formed Pastoral Care Committee. This committee is made up of four members: Linda Crocker, Diane Sato, Mary Margaret Smith, and Rev. Mary. This group will watch over our ‘Ohana and make sure that anyone who needs pastoral support will receive it.
Members of the Pastoral Care Committee have invited others in our ‘Ohana to prayerfully consider serving on a Pastoral Care Team to support their activities of caring for our sick, visiting with those who cannot attend worship, providing meals for those recently out of the hospital, and sharing Sunday communion with our homebound members. In response the All Saints’ Pastoral Care Team pledged to offer their best to the Lord, to our people, and to our ministry in the community.
We are pleased to recognize all members of the Pastoral Care Ministry at All Saints’.

Almighty God, pour your blessings on these your servants who have been called to the ministry of congregational pastoral care. Grant them grace to given themselves wholeheartedly in your service. Keep before them the example of our Lord, who did not think first of himself, but gave himself for us all. Let them share his ministry and consecration that they may enter into his joy. Guide them in their work. Reward their faithfulness with the knowledge that through them your purposes are accomplished; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Calling All Mobile Devices!
|
|
April 29th is Electronic Service Program Instruction and Awareness Day. All Saints’ has made our service programs available online in an effort to reduce our affect on the environment. By reducing the number of programs printed we reduce All Saints’ carbon footprint because our ink usage is decreased, fewer trees are used to make the paper, and less fossil fuel is used to process the trees and ship the paper. It’s an easy way to help care for God’s creation.
The Electronic Service Programs can be accessed two ways.
If your mobile/tablet cellular signal is reliable in the All Saints’ sanctuary:
Open the web browser on your device and go to
allsaintskauai.org
,
or go to The Epistle in your email, and in the scroll down menu find
Download E-Programs
.
When the page appears, scroll down to the appropriate date and click on the page to open it. You can now follow the service program on your device.
If your cell reception is weak in the Church Sanctuary or your device must connect to Wifi to access the internet:
While connected to your home WiFi (or some other WiFi service) open the web browser on your mobile device and go to
allsaintskauai.org
, or go to The Epistle in your email, and in the scroll down menu find
Download E-Programs
. When the page appears, scroll down to the appropriate date and click on the page to open it. The Program can be downloaded to your device by touching either three dots or Download to the right of the PDF symbol that appears above the first page of the program. After touching
Download
save the Program to your device by touching the square “
share icon
” and save to iBooks, Files, or wherever you save documents locally on your smartphone or tablet. When you arrive for services you can open the electronic Service Program that you saved previously on your device and follow it during the worship service. It’s quick, easy, and supports our Stewardship of the ‘aina.
Bill and CeCe Caldwell will be available before both the 8:00AM and 9:30AM services on Sunday, April 29th to assist with any questions you may have.
Never fear. If you prefer, paper service programs will continue to be available.

"The Story of Peter: From Fisherman to Saint"

I
n the
Lesser Feasts and Fasts
, the Episcopal book on the celebrations of the Church Year, we celebrate in January “The Confession of Saint Peter the Apostle.” The book makes its tribute to Peter, ending with:
|
|
As we watch Peter struggle with himself, often stumble, love his Lord and deny him, speak rashly and act impetuously, his life reminds us that our Lord did not come to save the godly and strong but to save the weak and sinful. Simon, an ordinary human being, was transformed by the Holy Spirit in the ‘Rock,’ and became the leader of the Church (
Lesser Feasts and Fasts

During Rev. Ryan's sabbatical Chris Neumann, CeCe Caldwell and Bill Caldwell will be publishing your
Epistle
. We encourage you to submit your ideas, announcements, photos, videos, articles, or stories for publication in your
Epistle
. We will work with you to craft your story. You give us the idea, we have a brief chat with you to outline the story, and you give us a quote if that is comfortable for you. It should only take five or ten minutes at your convenience. We take it from there!
