Spring is upon us in and our flowers are beginning to bloom. Let us look again at the lives we have been so generously given and renew our commitment to each other and our community. We should use our time to give back. We don't realize all the good we can do. A kind, encouraging word or helping hand can mean the world to our fellow man. In this newsletter, I have provided opportunities for you to volunteer and giveback to our beautiful East San José. I hope you can join me on April 21st for our annual Great American Litter Pick Up. We have four locations to join us, please see below for more information.

Great American Litter Pick Up

Registration begins at 8:00 am clean up from 8:30 am -11:30 am
Free Breakfast and Lunch will be served.

| Participatory Budgeting Update |
Participatory Budgeting has officially kicked off this year. After last year's successful funding of nine projects district-wide, we are excited to see what is in store for this year! We are in the process of implementing those nine projects and they are each at a different phase of completion. You can reach out to our office if you would like to learn more. We are hoping for a similar spread of projects this year! 5.
I am thrilled to announce the 2018 Steering Committee! This committee will be tasked Please start brainstorming and thinking of the best projects that could serve District with setting the rules and guidelines for all participants in this project. A big thank you and congratulations to these members of our community that will kick off this project!

| Earth Day at Alum Rock Park |
Sunday, April 22, 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Earth Day at Alum Rock Park - Join the Alum Rock Park Rangers, the Youth Science Institute and the Open Space Authority for an Earth Day celebration. Give back to the earth by volunteering from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Afterwards, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., enjoy the festivities which include a meet and greet with live animals and information on sustainable gardening and local pollinators. End the day by planting native seeds and a tree. Parking is $6 for visitors and free for volunteers. For more information, please contact the Alum Rock Park Rangers at 408-259-5477.

San Jose has been selected for the PolicyLink All-In Cities Anti-Displacement Policy Network! Along with 9 other cities, we will be developing a comprehensive anti-displacement policy agenda.
San Jose has one of the most expensive housing markets in the country, and as Vice Mayor I have been working tirelessly to help families of all incomes afford to live here. Our small businesses and diverse families that have built our communities deserve to stay, not be priced out. This is an urgent challenge all of us in the Bay Area and around our country need to confront together and I look forward to pursuing every policy and budget solution.

I will be working with City staff to ensure we will increase security at the park. I hope you will join me to support Veggielution to replace the stolen items to ensure a successful program that benefits our community.
Veggielution's food truck generator, two of their kitchen classroom generators, an orchard ladder, and a youth garden utility cart were stolen from th
e site. The individuals also cut and destroyed all the wiring in their Eastside Grown Food Truck.
Veggielution is currently taking donations through Facebook and on thier website.

| Mount Pleasant Art Project |
The Mount Pleasant Neighborhood Association, led by Ed Pope, Trudy Ellerbeck, and Melissa Got Lopez, went in front of the Public Art Committee last Tuesday to pitch their idea about painting murals on several art boxes in and around the Mount Pleasant neighborhood. This is the first time this group is embarking on this endeavor and they received clearance to go forth with one utility box that they will be painting over. The artist, Ed Pope, has some great ideas on incorporating San Jose's wildlife and natural beauty into the mural and would love some feedback on what people would like to see.
Below is some of his work that stylistically shows what sort of art will be displayed on the utility box. In a few months, this group will be back at the Public Art Committee to get clearance on several more boxes. Tortas Ahogadas Tradicion Tapatia has been a highly attended establishment at their Alum Rock location, given their massive following they have recently made the expansion to Sunset Shopping Center at 2003 Story Road. Plain and simple the food here is delicious. Their Tortas Ahogadas are famous in East San José and their menudo is fantastic! If you are ever in the mood for some great Mexican food make your way over to Tortas Ahogadas Tradicion Tapatia, their new establishment is very spacious which makes for a great place for the family to gather. Congratulations to this establishment's success in their expansion and we will be visiting for lunch soon.

Please, let our team know if you are interested in being part of the neighborhood watch program. We can even help set up a meeting in your neighborhoods, we need 10 households to get together to get it started. We can also help recruiting other neighbors if you are having trouble with finding neighbors. Neighborhood Watch focuses on informing the community how to discourage, deter and prevent crimes such as burglary, auto theft, car break-ins, and personal crimes which often occur in or near homes. Issues such as vandalism, graffiti, drug dealing and gang activity are also addressed when applicable.
The San Jose Police Department's Crime Prevention Unit has provided NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH presentations to neighborhood groups for nearly 25 years. Although crime trends have changed since the 1970's, the basic principle behind NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH remains the same; to bring communities together with the police to achieve the common goal of preventing crime.

San Jose will become Bay Area's First LEED-Certified City

San Jose has become one of the first U.S.
U.S. cities to participate in the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED for Cities certification program. LEED for Cities allows cities and local governments to track citywide sustainability performance. It takes into account 14 metrics, including air quality, education attainment, poverty levels, affordable housing, transportation, water, energy, health, equitability and safety.
