a message from the principal
|
As I write this, we are at the beginning of spring, but we are looking for our biggest snowstorm of the year. Despite this dire prediction, we are deeply involved with our academic, club and athletic activities. Our
boys swim team won the state championship for the first time in school history! Our
girl's basketball team lost a heartbreaker in the state championship game in overtime. Their effort and class were admirable to all who followed them. Our
Robotics team won their competition for the first time ever. This is an amazing accomplishment for a club that has burgeoned in the past few years by great leadership from senior
Nate Ludlow, and their sponsor,
Mr. Foley. Lastly, our
music department won an unprecedented eighth Blue Ribbon. This means that our
band, orchestra, and chorus all have received unanimous superior ratings at their assessments.
We are proud of all our students' accomplishments.
I have focused on some true superlatives here, but I could do that every week. Our students are exceptional in many ways, and I hope you are as proud of them as we are. Please come to school to see a game or a performance. You will be just as impressed as we are on a daily basis. Enjoy your spring break!

on Wed, Apr 11 at 9 am, at Cooper MS. Featured speaker is Langley College and Career Counselor, Hannah Wolff
, who will present
"Trends in College Admissions."
Mrs. Wolff will analyze college acceptance data from the last several years, both at Langley and nationally, to give parents an idea of emerging trends. Mrs. Wolff will be joined by Principal Amico, who will provide school updates and answer parent questions. Please join us!

 Last week, the co-authors of a new book, The Self Driven Child, shared their insights with the Langley community. Dr. William Stixrud, a renowned clinical neuropsychologist, and Ned Johnson, a test prep guru, recognized a common theme among their clients - high anxiety and a lack of motivation. They discovered the most important factor to improve the situation was giving children more control over their lives
.
In the chapter titled "I Love You Too Much to Fight with You About Your Homework," Dr. Stixrud and Mr. Johnson recommend that we stop acting as "enforcers" and instead act as "consultants."
In the business world, consultants review problems and solutions, make recommendations and then let their clients make the final decisions. The book recommends parents try to bring that way of thinking into their own households.
The authors urge us not to let our children believe "they are loved because of their accomplishments."
In the chapter titled "Inner Drive," they give us ideas about how to move our students from fear-based motivation to a healthy self-motivation for the long game.

This feature gives an important piece of info on drugs, alcohol or mental wellness. We hope these messages serve as conversation starters about substance use, stress and decisionmaking with your teen and family.

Although many colleges do not require applicants to take any SAT 2 Subject Tests, if your student is interested in applying to a school that requires or recommends the completion of one or more SAT subject tests, according to the College Board, the best time to take a Subject Test is toward the end of the school year
when a student has completed the course and studied the subject for an AP test or final exam. Therefore,
May and June are popular times to take the SAT Subject Tests
.
Here, a few notes on Subject Tests from College Board:

ou don't have to wait until junior year
to take the SAT Subject Tests. The best time to take the Subject Test is upon completion of that particular course.
- Literature, science, and math Subject Tests are offered on all SAT test dates. The language tests and World History test, however, are only offered on some of the dates.
- You can take up to three subject tests on the same date. But there are two caveats: you can only take one Listening test per date. Listening tests are always given in the first hour.
- You cannot take a Subject Test on the same date that you take the general SAT.

Many adults do not know what vaping devices look like so children have them out in the open and we don't even realize it. In an effort to educate our community,
FCPS has created 8 short video clips to help families learn about vaping. Click

(Click on the "Playlist" in the upper left corner of the video to see the eight titles).The videos also show a device called the Suorin Drop, a teardrop shaped refillable pod system, which has been added to the ATOD (Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs) presentation since Brian Maslowski, ATOD Seminar Instructor, spoke at our PTSA meeting in November.

The Langley Robotics Team finished in 1st place at the FIRST Robotics Chesapeake District Southern Maryland Event held Mar 16-18. This is the first time in the club's 20-year history that the team has won the event. Additionally, they were awarded the Creativity Award for the innovative design of their robot. The Langley Robotics Team is mentored by Physics Teachers Mr. Foley and Mr. Swanson. The 60-person team is lead by Captains Nate Ludlow, Zach Lesan, Chris Larounis, Peter Swaak, Rania Saeed, Meso Kim, James Ellsworth and Shayan Golshani.
FIRST
Robotics Competition is recognized as the premier high school engineering challenge. Teams of students have six weeks to conceptualize, design, build, program, modify and test a robot to participate in a competition that changes each year. Following the design and build phase, teams enter competitions to compete for scores that earn them a place at the FIRST Chesapeake District Championship.
By winning this event, they are qualified to attend the District Championship Mar 28-31
at the Xfinity Center at the University of Maryland.

School Resource Officer John Morris has always wanted to help other people, he had previously worked as a volunteer firefighter and later became
a policeman.
"My soccer coach growing up was a lieutenant on the city of Falls Church Police Department, and that kind of inspired me," Officer Morris said. He also says that his family had a big impact on his choice to become an SRO at Langley. His mother worked as a teacher assistant in Fairfax County and his father retired and later became a teacher's assistant, also in the county, so Officer Morris has a special connection to Fairfax County Public Schools.
Having been an officer for over 23 years, Officer Morris enjoys being at Langley High School. He is known for being
great at working with his colleagues under high pressure.
When asked about the recent Parkland shooting, he explained how it affects how he works throughout the day. The doors being locked as a new safety precaution has put him and his fellow co-workers at ease knowing that the students are safer throughout the school day. "It is a lot easier now that we have door access systems in the school that are locked up," he said.
In the past year,
Officer Morris has been awarded for pursuing a criminal that had just robbed a bank.
Due to Officer Morris's quick thinking and location,
he was able to aid in arrest of the man.

Graduation for the Class of 2018 will be held on Thurs, June 7 at 5 pm at Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C. The graduation speaker is
Brendan Shapiro,
Langley Class of 1994. He and his wife (also a Langley graduate) coached track here for many years and then went on to open the Potomac River Running Stores. Brendan now teaches PE at Franklin MS and is also a contestant on the current season of Survivor. Seniors, o

Graduation week will lead off with the Baccalaureate on Sun, June 3, from 4-5:30 pm. A Baccalaureate is a faith-based service sponsored by the senior parents. During the service, seniors
of all faiths
and their families come together
to celebrate their graduation. Seniors who choose to participate can do so in many ways.
Reading a poem, scripture, reading from a faith-based book of choice, playing and/or singing a song,
we would love to have as many seniors participate as possible. If your senior would like to participate in any way, please have them email Amy Hunt at

2018 congressional art competition
|
 Each spring, a nationwide high school arts competition, The Artistic Discovery Contest, is sponsored by the members of the U.S. House of Representatives to recognize and encourage artistic talent.
The Artistic Discovery Contest is open to all high school students. The winning artwork of our district's competition will be displayed for one year in the U.S. Capitol. The exhibit in Washington will include the winning artwork from all participating districts from around the country. The winning artwork is also featured on House.gov's Congressional Art Competition page.
