A year ago, we launched the Cape Community Housing Partnership - an ambitious project that we hoped would result in our Lower Cape Towns taking bold action to address the affordable housing crisis in our
region.
Last fall we trained 70 elected and appointed municipal officials through the Cape Housing Institute - a six part training program designed to provide participants with the knowledge and skills to advance the production of affordable housing in their communities.
The final session of the Institute provided an opportunity for participants to focus on what they could do in the coming months in their communities.
I'm pleased to report that the
results have been amazing. Over the next few weeks, Annual Town Meetings will focus on a number of innovative initiatives designed to make progress on affordable housing. A few examples:
- Orleans will consider "1% for Housing" a proposal to dedicate 1% of the Town's annual budget to the Affordable Housing Trust - to be used to support housing projects in the future.
- Brewster is proposing to acquire a piece of land that will unlock a 15 acre land locked parcel primed for affordable housing development.
- Harwich, Brewster, Chatham, Orleans, Provincetown and Truro are proposing to dedicate Community Preservation Funding to hire housing specialists or consultants.
- Truro voted to transfer $200K in free cash their Housing Trust and Wellfleet approved $100,000 in funding for 65 units of affordable housing in Eastham - a great example of regional collaboration.
There is tremendous momentum in addressing our affordable housing crisis and I'm so proud that our Housing Institute has helped to create it.

Annual Meeting Celebrates Community
and Elects 5 New Board Members

It was a great evening at Karoo Restaurant. The CDP held its 27th Annual Meeting on March 29 where over 75 members listened as participants from the CDPs Housing Institute/Housing Advocacy Training shared their experience, honored local citizens, and elected five new members to the CDP Board of Directors.
After an hour of catching up with friends over drinks and hors d'oeuvres, the crowd moved upstairs for the formal meeting.
Andrea Aldana, Director of Housing Advocacy, kicked off the program with a panel discussion highlighting the CDPs recently completed Housing Institute for elected & appointed officials and Housing Advocacy Training. Participants shared what they learned through their experience and what they are doing as a result of their new knowledge and skills. An impressive number of initiatives will be debated at spring Annual Town Meetings thanks to the energy created by the CDPs Cape Community Housing Partnership.

When Carol Hayward bought Talking Threads, a custom embroidery business, sixteen years ago, it had been run on a part-time basis out of a storefront on Brackett Road in Eastham. It is now a growing business that has expanded to include silk screening and is operated out of Hayward's home.
Hayward is a CDP regular, participating in numerous workshops, taking advantage of technical assistant mentoring opportunities and most recently applying for a small business professional services grant.

The CDP's Ho
using Rehabilitation program helps low-income home owners make vital repairs to their homes and has aided over 400 families over the past 14 years. Local contractors have been engaged to complete more than $9.6 million in renovation projects.
This year the CDP has available up to $40,000 in funds for income eligible residents in Dennis, Harwich, Eastham, Truro and Provincetown to pay for critical home repairs. In addition to repairing roofing, siding, windows, doors, heating and plumbing, the program covers minor structural repairs and lead paint abatement. Additionally, the program incorporates energy efficient upgrades whenever possible which also helps to lower ongoing heating costs to homeowners, thereby easing the burden of home ownership.
