ALUMNA SPOTLIGHT: ANN DZURANIN EARNS PRESTIGIOUS AWARD
Ann Dzuranin
Ann Dzuranin earned a PhD in accounting from the University of South Florida nearly a decade ago and has made her mark on the profession and in the classroom. Now an associate professor of accounting at Northern Illinois University, Dzuranin is heading to Washington, D.C., where she will pick up the American Accounting Association's 2018 Innovation in Accounting Education Award. The recognition is for her research, titled "Data & Analytics in Accounting: Innovation and Impact in Accountancy Education." To read more, click here.
31 BULLS-TO-BUSINESS STUDENTS GET INTO RESIDENCE HALLS EARLY
Bulls to Business students arrive
Earlier this month, an innovative program that introduces incoming biz freshmen to the campus welcomed 31 students to their new home-away-from-home. MUMA'S ONLINE MBA PROGRAM RANKED NO. 29 IN THE NATION
The Best Schools ranking of the 50 best online MBA programs in the nation put the University of South Florida's Muma College of Business program at No. 29. In a list released earlier this month, the publication said the online MBA program offered here "develops key knowledge and skills for success in administrative positions." To read more, click here.
FACULTY SPOTLIGHT: AL HEVNER HONORED AT PURDUE UNIVERSITY
Al Hevner
Alan Hevner, a USF Distinguished University Professor, has amassed a wall full of awards for his groundbreaking research in design science, but his most recent may be among the most poignant. This spring, Hevner, an Eminent Scholar in the Information Systems and Decision Sciences Department, headed to Purdue University in Indiana, his alma mater, where he was honored as one of its Distinguished Science Alumni. At Purdue, Hevner enrolled in what was the fledgling computer science program and went on to receive bachelor's and  master's degrees and a PhD. To read more, click here.
FLORIDA SBDC AT USF OFFERING BASIC ECONOMICS COURSE
The accredited course is four days and each registrant is required to attend all modules to receive a completion certificate. This course, accredited by the International Economic Development Council, qualifies as a professional development training requirement needed to sit for the Certified Economic Developer exam. ISDS PROFESSOR NAMED INTERIM BUSINESS DEAN AT USFSM
Gert-Jan de Vreede
Gert-Jan de Vreede, a professor in the Information Systems and Decision Sciences Department, was named interim dean of the College of Business at the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee campus, replacing James Curran. De Vreede has taught at the Tampa campus for the past three years and will officially begin his administrative duties on Aug. 6. Prior to coming to USF, de Vreede was a professor at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where he served as founding director of the interdisciplinary Center for Collaboration Science. MUMA STAFF COUNCIL COLLECTS SCHOOL SUPPLIES FOR KIDS
The Muma College of Business's Staff Council is mounting a school supply and backpack drive to provide school supplies for children in need. The council is partnering with the Hillsborough County Guardian ad Litem Program, which represents children who are in dependency court and have been placed in foster care. FACULTY/STAFF NOTES
* Uday Murthy, professor of accounting and director of the Lynn Pippenger School
Murthy
of Accountancy, has won the 2018 Journal of Information Systems Best Paper Award for the article titled, "The Effects of Information Disaggregation and Financial Statement Interactivity on Judgments and Decisions of Nonprofessional Investors." He and co-author Andrea Kelton, associate professor of accounting at Middle Tennessee State University, will be honored at the American Accounting Association's Annual Accounting Information Systems business meeting in August.
* Grandon Gill, professor in the Information Systems and Decision Sciences Department and director of the DBA program, received the 2018 Ranulph Glanville Award at the World Multi-Conference on Systemics, Cybernetics and Informatics recently in Orlando. The recognition was for his contributions to informatics science, the cybernetic implications of case studies and the cybernetic structure of informing systems.
* Tom Smith, assistant professor of accounting, received a notice of acceptance for his article titled, "Do Auditors' Price Breach Risk in Their Audit Fee?" from Journal of Information Systems, a top-tier journal. The article was co-authored with Florida Atlantic University faculty members Rob Pinsker, whose PhD is from USF, and Julia Higgs.
* Lori Wilder, who handles scheduling of classes in the Collier Student Success Center; Doug McLeod, who runs the mail room; Lauren Baumgartner, academic  program specialist with the DBA program; Jose Soto, undergrad programs office manager; and Sandra Denslow with undergraduate advising, all were recognized last month by the USF Staff Senate for winning Quiet Quality Awards over the past year. The awards recognize conscientiousness, professional manner, positive attitude and work performance, among other attributes.
* Kyle King and Michael Noel, both business consultants with the Florida Small

Business Development Center at USF, won statewide Valor Awards. King volunteered to help in the relief efforts in the Florida Keys after Hurricane Irma devastated the region. There, he helped clients of
Noel
the center recover in the wake of the storm. He also helped the Stano Foundation send emergency survival backpacks to Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria left the U.S. territory in shambles. Noel, working in a remote office in Avon Park, helped 87 small businesses receive nearly $3 million in bridge loans in Central Florida, allowing them stay open and on their feet after Hurricane Irma.
* Dipayan Biswas, professor of marketing, was invited to be an associate editor with the Journal of Retailing, a top-tier journal. He also serves as associate editor with two other journals, the top-tier Journal of Business Research and the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science.

* Brian Campbell ('93, Accounting) was the recipient of the Southern Region Chapter President of the Year Award at the 49th Annual National Association of Black Accountants Convention & Expo in Orlando last month. He currently is NABA Tampa Bay Chapter president and a founding member of the NABA Metropolitan Tampa Bay Chapter at USF. He is the accounting services officer at Hillsborough Community College.
* Alyssa Acquaviva ('14 Marketing) joined the Sarasota law firm of Williams Parker Harrison Dietz & Getzen in its trusts and estates department. She previously served as an intern to Judge Susan Bucklew of the U.S. District Court in Tampa and circuit Judge Sean Cadigan of the Florida 13th Judicial Circuit Court.
* Adam Hamilton ('16, Accounting) delivered a commencement speech at the University of Oregon, where he recently received a master's degree in accounting. He also won the Outstanding Student Award, voted on by his fellow students, and the Excellence in Accounting Award, voted on by faculty.
* Michelle Mitchell ('92, General Business Administration) is GateHouse Media's new vice president of sales for West Florida. She was previously the Herald-Tribune Media Group's vice president of advertising.
* Christopher Fils ('08, Finance) was named manager of the Raymond James & Associates Suncoast Complex, the company's Sarasota, Lakewood Ranch and Venice branches. He previously worked at Morgan Stanley's San Francisco Bay Area-Los Gatos branch.
* Anthony Acitelli ('93, Finance) has been named chairman of the board of directors for Remington Outdoor Company. He is also the company's CEO.
* Devora Henderson ('86, Management) was promoted to vice president, global partners and resellers, at Diebold Nixdorf, a financial corporation based in Canton, Ohio. She previously was vice president of retail for the firm's Americas region.
* Lisa Russo ('87, MBA) has joined the Sarasota Architectural Foundation's Board of Directors. She is a senior vice president for Baird Private Wealth Management in Sarasota.
* Scott Himelhoch ('95, MBA) has been promoted to vice president of land acquisition for the Tampa division of Taylor Morrison home builders.
* MaryAnn Koops ('01, Management Information Systems) joined Neal Communities home builders as an area sales manager for its Lakewood Ranch team.
 

* Aug. 16, 8-9 a.m., Bagels with the Dean, a Muma College of Business move-in breakfast, will be held in the atrium for incoming freshmen and parents. Besides bagels, fruit and coffee will be served. Free T-shirts will also be handed out.
* Aug. 24, 11:45 a.m., the annual Muma College of Business Scholarship Luncheon will take place in the Marshall Student Center's ballroom.
* Aug. 25, 11:30 a.m. until 2 p.m., the annual Lynn Pippenger School of Accountancy's Welcome Back Picnic will take place in the atrium and breezeway of the Muma College of Business. The event is sponsored by The Accounting Circle.
* Aug. 25, 1-6:30 p.m. the Bulls Block Party 2018, sponsored by the USF Greater Tampa Area Chapter of the USF Alumni Association, takes place in Ybor City. Last year, nearly 1,000 USF Bulls made the party. For more information and to register for this ticketed event, click here.
* Aug. 28, The Muma College of Business's Week of Welcome bash will take place in the atrium and breezeway. The event, sponsored by GTE Financial, will feature free hot dogs, T-shirts and other swag. Department chairs will be there to greet new students. Time of the event to be announced. 
* Aug. 28-29, Transition Day for incoming freshmen and business transfer students will be held for new students to meet department chairs and learn about career services and other important details. The Aug. 28 session is from 10 a.m. until noon in BSN 225 and the Aug. 29 session is from 1:30-3:30 p.m. in BSN 221. To register for either session, click here.
* Sept. 6, 1-5 p.m., the Muma College of Business Internship Showcase will be held in the atrium. Students will mingle with current and former interns from top local companies to find out what interns do and to learn about new internship opportunities.
* Sept. 11, the Muma College of Business will host a career clinic in the atrium. Students can meet with advisors to upgrade résumés and examine various approaches to landing that first post-graduation job.
* Sept. 20, the USF Career Fair will be held in the Sun Dome (recently named the  Yuengling Center). Advisors and corporate representatives will be on hand to ease the transition from student to career-minded professional. Times to be announced. A day later, a career fair at the same location will take place just for accounting majors.
* Oct. 15-21, Homecoming for the USF Bulls. The week's events include the Homecoming Ball, a comedy show and an alumni party. The Running of the Bulls Homecoming Parade through campus takes place on Oct. 19. The Muma College of Business will continue the tradition of holding a homecoming celebration that day in the atrium and breezeway, serving food and refreshments before staging a parade-watch party.
* Oct. 10, the Florida Blue Statewide Health Care Innovation Pitch Competition will take place in Lake Nona near Orlando with student teams from across Florida vying for awards and cash prizes. The event is coordinated by the USF Center for Entrepreneurship and Florida Blue.
* Oct. 11, 8:30-10 a.m., the Muma College of Business's Conversation with a CEO featuring Vincent Jackson, former wide receiver with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and now a successful entrepreneur in the region, will be held in the Center for Advanced Medical Learning Simulation, 124 S. Franklin St., in downtown Tampa. To register, click here.
