From the Principal

Welcome to the new quarter! We are getting settled once again and are happy to have our Knights here, no matter the learning model. Report cards will be headed your way soon, and our new schedules started on Monday. We are all getting used to our new reality of having many changes each nine weeks. This is a year of learning to be flexible for sure!

We are excited about the elementary APEX Fun Run, and our students will be coming home with their orange pledge lanyard. APEX has both an in-person program and a remote program for our virtual learners! The theme this year is MIGHTY, and there are daily character lessons that are being built into morning meetings! This is an important event for our athletic department, so encourage your students to get ready to run. Spread the word to your families to get involved in our effort. As a grandparent of Trivium students, I am a willing sponsor of unlimited laps!

Our resident chickens are busy laying eggs, and we could not be happier. We are delighted they are doing their jobs. The coop has been winterized, so they are warm and toasty.

Our tower garden is about to be planted, and since we are putting it in the front lobby, parents will be able to see it from afar. This year we will plant many vegetable varieties, so we can feed Oreo the rabbit from our own garden.

Please remember that you need to fill in the Dr. Owl health check-in form daily before students enter the building. The information is at the end of the newsletter for those who have returned to campus this week and may need the link to the form.

As always, we appreciate your continued support of our teachers. Their jobs are not easy, and we are lucky to have such great teachers who come to work with sweet smiles and big hearts. We are grateful to be with your students every day.

Proud to be a Knight,
Marsha Cawthon

Curriculum Corner
OnRamps is a Dual Enrollment Program through the University of Texas offering students rigorous courses aligned with college expectations. This year, Trivium is offering OnRamps for Algebra II, and we have a handful of 10th graders participating in this program instructed by Mrs. Ram. The students in this class have the opportunity to not only receive high school credit for Algebra II but also college credit from the University of Texas for college algebra.

OnRamps students finished their very first timed College Exam last week and started working on Matrices. This week students are learning to use Matrices to solve complex multi-variable equations. Students will use matrices to balance chemical equations as a cross-curricular application.  Students in OnRamps learn by using inquiry based lessons, posing questions, making decisions, and having discussions during class. It's exciting to have Trivium Knights and University of Texas Longhorns on campus!

The Showcase

We are so excited to have Career and Technology Education (or CTE) programs up and running this semester for our high school students! We have two new programs, Digital Design and Media Production and Commercial Photography, and both are off to a great start.

In Digital Design and Media Production this quarter, students have been studying the work and job field of graphic designers, animators, sound designers, video editors and more, familiarizing themselves with the vast world of digital media careers. Each student researched an artist from a specific job field they wanted to explore and learned about the work, style, training and day-to-day life of their chosen professional.

Right now, students are learning about sound design, using a program called Audacity to record and put together audio clips to produce a story using only sounds. Students have demonstrated skill and creativity in crafting these sound stories, including an alien invasion, a person on a hiking adventure and LOTS of spooky Halloween-themed sound stories!

In Commercial Photography, students started out by learning the history of photography and the basic mechanics of a camera. They’ve been developing skills of composing an image, using a camera in manual focus and adjusting aperture and shutter speed settings.

Photo students are currently working on a still life project for which they brought a background and objects from home and manipulated the lighting to create a still life setup in the classroom. Included are some images from Kaplan Brady’s still life series where she experimented with water distortion and color.

Some really exciting work has come from these two programs thus far, and we cannot wait to see the work and skills developed through the rest of the year!
