ILLINOIS HOCKEY HALL OF FAME ANNOUNCES 16TH CLASS OF INDUCTEES
|
Illinois hockey has a very long and rich hockey history, due in large part, to the foundation laid down by these inductees. Their tireless dedication in making sure every individual who had a desire to participate in this great sport has had the opportunity to do so.
Depending on the situation involving the COVID-19 pandemic, we are tentatively planning that the IHHF Induction Dinner will be held in their honour on Sunday, January 31, 2021, at the Belvedere Banquet Hall located at 1170 West Devon Avenue in Elk Grove Village beginning at 5:00 pm. We will be making a final decision on whether or not the induction ceremonies will be held on January 31, 2021 by December 1, 2020. (If the Induction Ceremonies can not be held this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we will be inducting this 16th class into the Illinois Hockey Hall of Fame on Sunday, January 30, 2022 - we will let everyone know by December 1, 2020). Joining in honoring this special group of inductees will be several of the past inductees into the Hall of Fame. This year's inductees, and all of the past inductees have demonstrated, through their actions over the years, their personal commitment in making a difference in the lives of thousands of Illinois youth and the Illinois hockey community.

AHAI Girls College Hockey Night is November 12th
By Anita Lichterman, AHAI Girls Chair - Many are wondering how they can be seen by college coaches and scouts if we are not playing games. On Thursday, November 12, the AHAI Girls Committee will be hosting a webinar that will shed light on what can be done during this pandemic to get your name and skills in front of college coaches, what to expect as a college athlete, nutritional information, importance of injury prevention and rehabilitation, and what else is out there for you in the hockey world.
Registration is open now through November 9, 2020. Webinar link will be sent approximately 2-3 days before the event to the email address(es) used in your registration. Parents are encouraged to be part of this webinar as well. Players, you will be required to add a parent's email address to your registration.

 Playing for Dad: Glenbard Defenseman Andrew Stolfe Skates to Honor his Late Father
By Ross Forman - On Monday morning, March 2nd, the day that co-op Glenbard was playing Libertyville in its first IHSHL Combined Division State Tournament game, then-junior defenseman Andrew Stolfe sent a text to the team's head coach, Jason Hawkins. "Hey coach. I am planning on coming to the game tonight ready to play!" Stolfe wrote. No one would have been shocked if the Glenbard West student skipped the game, even with its magnitude. Stolfe had endured the worst possible weekend. On Friday, February 29, his dad, Marc, died unexpectedly of a heart attack. READ MORE>>

 Senior Chris Petri Leads New-Look Fox Valley Hawks in North-Central Division
By Ross Forman - Chris Petri, a senior center in his third varsity season for the co-op Fox Valley Hawks, is one of only four returning players to the team that is a mix of five schools. Petri, 17, who lives in St. Charles attends St. Charles East High School and is undecided on college plans for next fall, plays alongside teammates from St. Charles North, Geneva, Batavia and Kaneland high schools. "Our team camaraderie (last season) was something special and I feel not a lot teams have that when combining 5 different schools to make one team," said Petri, who shoots left-handed and wears uniform No. 63. AHAI to Host Virtual CEP Clinics in November & December
By Jim Clare, Illinois Coach-In-Chief - AHAI will be hosting two (2) Virtual CEP clinics in November, a two-day Level 2 Clinic on November 10 and November 12 from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm and a two-day Level 3 on November 17 and November 19 from 6:30 to 9:30 pm. We will host a two-day Virtual Level 1 CEP clinic on December 5 and December 6 from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm.
AHAI is working to schedule several additional CEP Clinics in December and will announce those dates once they are finalized. We recommend registering as soon as possible as these clinics will fill up quickly. USA Hockey is also hosting many Virtual CEP Clinics at all levels.  Officials Hone Their Skills, Look to Work Higher-Level Games through IHOA's Advanced Development Program
By Ross Forman - James Ugone was, quite simply, intrigued about the Advanced Development Program, run by IHOA under the guidance of USA Hockey. He was at one of the required pre-season IHOA seminars when the instructors spoke highly, with first-hand knowledge, of the program. Ugone was 14 when he started officiating, mostly to earn some cash from the 8U and 10U games he worked. He continued to officiate at age 15, but then his schooling and playing career pushed ahead of his path as an official.
Now 27 and living in Chicago, Ugone is in his fifth season as an official - and his second in ADP. "After playing junior hockey for several years and taking some time away from the game after my playing career came to an end, figuring a way back into hockey was a main focus of mine," he said. QUESTION: In a Body Contact category, a Team A player is skating up the ice along the side boards with the puck. The Team B player in pursuit has established an angle that allows him to close the gap along the boards and minimize the space the player with the puck has to go through. Contact between the players occurs and the Team A player is knocked into the boards and loses possession of the puck. Should a penalty for body checking be called? ANSWER>>

 Common Questions About Concussions

This month instead of writing about a specific topic, I thought I would address the most common questions about concussions I hear from athletes and their parents.
Q: Do you have to lose consciousness (be "knocked out") to have suffered a concussion?
A: No. Only 9-10% of concussions result in a loss of consciousness. Someone can absolutely have suffered a concussion without losing consciousness.
Q: I heard about a blood test for concussions. Is that true?
A: Unfortunately, it is not. Last year a new blood test was approved that may detect bleeding of the brain after a trauma but that is a different injury than concussion. Hopefully, some day we will have a test available that can reliably determine if a concussion has occurred but there are no tests commercially available at this time. READ MORE>>

 Reintroducing Hockey On Your Block, with Laura Langen
By Ross Forman - While growing up in Mauston, Wisconsin, a small town of about 3,500 people, the locals decided to start a hockey program for the boys... and Laura Langen. So, dads built the outdoor rink and made the ice themselves. The locker rooms were old trailers, and the coach was a neighborhood dad who simply loved the game. The Screamin' Eagles were formed. Langen played with those same boys from age 4-12 - and then made the switch to girls' hockey with the Madison Capitols. Langen's love for the game continued into college where she played for the Saint Mary's Cardinals in Winona, Minnesota.
"Hockey is one of my biggest passions ... as players who love the game, I believe we owe it to the sport to pass our knowledge along to the next generation. Every coach and volunteer out there know what I'm talking about. The feeling you get when you see a player hit certain milestones and the joy just being on the ice brings to a community." READ MORE>>
