Lovejoy High School

A Message from the Principal

Lovejoy HS News 04 09 18

P arents and Guardians,

This week, many of our students will be taking their End Of Course (EOC) Exams. The English I EOC Exam will primarily include 9th graders and will be administered on Tuesday, April 10th. On Thursday, April 12th, our 10th grade students will take the English II EOC Exam. Both exams will begin at approximately 8:45 a.m. and will conclude for most students by 1:45 p.m. Plenty of sleep and a good breakfast will be a great way to help your student be ready for these days.

Don't forget that next Wednesday, April 18th, is an Early Release Day. It had originally been scheduled for April 11th, but was moved earlier in the year. As usual, all students will be dismissed for lunch on Wednesday at 12:15 pm and are able to leave campus at that time if they have their own transportation. School will be dismissed at 1:00 pm, and buses will run at that time.

Please take some time and review the information below regarding some of the important dates and events that are coming up. Have a great week!

Sincerely,

Chris Mayfield
Principal
Lovejoy High School

Cub Scout Pack 358 serves all three Lovejoy elementary schools. Blue and Gold is a celebration of the accomplishments of the Cub Scouts who have earned their next rank. Each scout will "crossover" a bridge and be welcomed into their next rank. Webelos 2 scouts will have a special ceremony called the Arrow of Light and will be received into their new Boy Scout Troop. This is a big accomplishment for the Scouts who have worked hard all year to achieve their new rank.

We appreciate the help of our High School friends who assist us in making this event a success.

Interested volunteers should either email Michelle at [email protected] or text Michelle at 214.801.3505 and she will respond with event details. The deadline to respond is April 13th.

Student Recognition

LHS Newspaper - The Red Ledger
Seven staff members from The Red Ledger were honored at a luncheon at the Statler Hotel on Friday as a part of the Dallas Morning News High School Journalism Day. Senior and co-editor-in-chief Hannah Ortega was selected as one of five summer interns for the newspaper. Hannah will participate in a 10-week program writing for the news department before heading to the University of Texas at Austin to study journalism in the fall. The newspaper also held a competition for student journalists across the DFW Metroplex with The Red Ledger placing one of three finalists in six categories.

Sophomore Madeline Sanders placed first in news reporting for this story on the girls cross country team. Sophomore Lily Hager placed first in sports feature writing for her story on a student rodeo bullfighter. Sophomore Jackie Carroll placed first in video for this story about a father and son with a passion for baseball card collecting. Junior Parker Nolan won the news photo competition for his top shot from this photo essay about a resident rescuing a trapped hawk. Senior Emma Overholt won the graphics portfolio category with a collection of infographics . Senior Mary Catherine Wells placed second in the column writing category for her personal story about a special pickup truck. Jackie was also selected by editor Mike Wilson as the overall visual sweepstakes winner and awarded a $250 Amazon gift card.

The staffers received praise from the staff of the Dallas Morning News staff, including publisher Grant Moise who told adviser Corey Hale how Lovejoy students had really "stood out" in the competition. The impression was also made on event emcee Sarah Blaskovich, a former high school intern who is now Digital Entertainment Editor and Food Writer for the Morning News. Blaskovich added personal comments for several of the winners, including reading Madeline Sanders' news lead aloud to the hundreds of student journalists in attendance.

Afterward, Charlie Scudder, a DMN writer and another former high school intern, tweeted about his reaction to several of the winners as well:

Global Competition
Junior Rithik Tangella (Chief Investment Officer and Team Leader) led his capital management firm, Medici Capital, with Team Analysts Andrew Chang, Collins Morgan and Seth Roundtree during the 10-week University Of Pennsylvania Global Wharton Investment Competition. Medici Capital ranked 1st out of the 453 teams in North and South America. With an initial capital of $100,000, Medici Capital grew it by almost 73% to $172,868.41 through a strategic plan developed by Rithik Tangella. The team received news of attaining a finalist position in the global competition and are proud to be representing Lovejoy High School in the Global Finals at the University of Pennsylvania in early May. Out of almost 1500 teams in the world, only 15 are competing at the Global Finals.

LHS Fishing
Leopard Fishing, the North Division team of the year, is headed to the Regional Championship on Lake Lewsiville this weekend.  $53,000 in scholarship money and bids to the State Championship are at stake!

LHS Visual Arts
This year was one of records for Lovejoy Visual Arts. We are extremely proud of the latest recognition of our students efforts through one of our countries longest running visual arts and writing competition; Scholastic Art and Writing. Of the 63 regional awards (our region includes 7 states), 25 pieces/portfolios received a "Gold Key" and moved on to the national competition.

Out of these unprecedented 25 award winning works/portfolios our LJVA students set a new standard with 9 pieces/portfolios winning national awards! 3 of these national award winning artists have been invited to Carnegie Hall for the National Award Ceremony in June. Please join us in congratulating all of our National Award Winners in this incredible honor! We could not be more proud of all of our students' effort, work ethic, and pursuit within their personal artwork.
