President's Message
Here comes the last quarter of the year of 2019! The time flies as fast as our Santa Ana winds! The calendar is really quite busy again with the holiday preparations that are mingling with every day business! 

We are working on visiting many local Soroptimist International clubs that are supporting our programs for helping women as that long time bond remains very dear to us! So it is with great delight that we welcome to our Board of Directors, Becky Goebel from SI Palm Desert club! Becky has had an interest in Soroptimist House of Hope and our ideals for many years and has a history of working with non- profit organizations so she will be a good asset. 

We also welcome our dear friend Pam Field back to the SHOH Board as of October 26, 2019. Pam was very active with SHOH over ten years ago and has returned to help SHOH move into the next decade. She is currently President of the SI Palm Springs club and will be an amazing asset to our board of directors team.

There will be some changes in the near future that we are hoping will flow easily into our patterns and will continue to enhance our wonderful programs and organization. We ask for renewed support and assistance from all of our admirers as we head to 2020!

Executive Director's Message
JULY - SEPTEMBER 2019
 
As the weather cools and we enter the 4 th Quarter of 2019, I realize this will be my last article as Executive Director. Yes, it is true! I am retiring December 31, 2019 after having the privilege of serving SHOH for over 20 years. Thanks to SHOH I am looking forward to celebrating 21 years clean and sober on December 7, 2019 as well. Things certainly have changed in the last 20 years both professionally and personally. SHOH has grown into a highly respected SUD treatment/recovery residence program with all employees being Certified and/or Registered with our Certifying Body CCAPP. We are proud to provide residential drug medi-cal services to the indigent women needing help to overcome the ravages of addiction and enjoy a wonderful relationship with the County of Riverside and all of the generous grant foundations that has made it possible for SHOH to keep our doors open. Our mission is to help those women in need and my legacy will be the same as Brigitte Page and all those who have gone before me: Keep the doors open, keep the staff trained and fairly compensated, keep the spirit of social model as the number one ingredient in our Labor of Love that is SHOH. My successor is Rebecca Norton and has been training since March 2018. May you give her the same respect and support as I have been blessed to have received from all of you. Together SHOH can continue to be of service well into the next decade and beyond. Happy Halloween, Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah and a very Happy and Prosperous 2020!

PART TWO
An ongoing series about the history of SHOH
Joyce L. Scott 1984-2008
The first years were very slim. With a mortgage payment and the need for a vehicle so the clients could be transported to meetings. A donor gave us a very well used station wagon. About that time, a new client completed her 90 day program, but she stayed two extra days to help with a fundraiser. A few months later we needed a new Director and that graduate, Joyce Scott said that she would help us out, she said “you gave me 3 months so I will give you 3 months”. Of course we all know she stayed much longer.
One day Joyce was working in the yard and a woman approached her and introduced herself. She was Carol Addiss from Riverside County. Carol asked to speak to Joyce for a few minutes so she was invited to lunch. Carol said that the County liked our “track record” and would like to send us clients and pay their way. That was the beginning of our contracts with Riverside County that have continued for all these years.
 
Joyce stayed with SHOH for over 24 years and became the Executive Director until she retired in 2008 due to her health problems. We lost her in 2016 but her legacy as “Mama Bear” continues to live on in the minds and hearts of all the SHOH ladies that knew her.
 
Many more stories to tell because this only takes us up to 1984.

CCAPP MULTI-CULTURAL SYMPOSIUM – BAKERSFIELD

On July 19 – July 21, 2019 Cynthia “Oma” Gray, Executive Director, Lupe Stoneburner, Director/Program Manager and Rebecca Norton, Recovery Residence Manager attended a wonderful Multi-Cultural Symposium sponsored by our friends from CCAPP. There were a multitude of diverse topics and trainings with CEU’s available for credential upkeep. Oma and Lupe attended the Membership and Credentialing Board meetings (respectively). Rebecca is getting a wealth of training that will benefit her in her new position as Executive Director in January 2020. In addition, she attended the Certified Treatment Executive training course in August at the CCAPP office in Long Beach.
STAFF APPRECIATION LUNCHEON

The annual Staff Appreciation Luncheon was held at Escena on 7-27-19. The SHOH Staff, Sub-Contractors and Board of Directors enjoyed a lovely lunch and lots of love and hugs kudos for jobs well done throughout the year.
ANNUAL SPAGHETTI DINNER SAN GORGONIO PASS ROTARY CLUB

Staff and clients attended the annual San Gorgonia Pass Rotary Club Spaghetti Dinner on 9-4-19. SHOH has been working this event since our inception in 1981. It is the opening of the annual Banning Stagecoach Days and is one of the signature events for the Pass Area. This year’s attendance was over 800 people who enjoyed Johnny Russo’s famous spaghetti and fixins’. The Rotary Club is always so grateful for our help and without fail, we get reports of how wonderful the ladies are. We are grateful to the Rotary for providing us the opportunity to provide community service. It truly helps our women return to the mainstream of society.
RECOVERY HAPPENS 2019

On 9-13-19, Staff and clients attended the annual Recovery Happens event at Fairmont Park in Riverside. This event is sponsored by Riverside University Healthcare Systems – Substance Abuse, Prevention and Treatment Administration. Every year, a staff member is chosen for the coveted Counselor of the Year award. This year’s award went to Alexicia Ramirez, Night Attendant. Alexcia is alumni of SHOH and has been employed since April 2017. She is currently an RADT1 and is working toward her CADCI credential while caring for her mother. Alexicia is an amazing asset to SHOH and we are blessed to have her on our team.
IN MEMORIAM
PHILBERT JAMES “JAMIE” STONEBURNER
January 21, 1961 - August 21, 2019

Our beloved friend Jamie Stoneburner, husband of Lupe Stoneburner, Program Director at SHOH went home to his heavenly father after a long battle with cancer. Jamie was an awesome human being and loved beyond words by so many. His Celebration of Life was held on September 14, 2019 at Miracle Springs to standing room only in the same ballroom where he and Lupe were married on September 14, 2013. His love for Lupe is eternal and all of his family and friends can hear him saying “What Doooing Honey?” Jamie was a great friend to SHOH and was always available to help, especially with pesky plumbing repairs and a whole host of other jobs large and small. May he rest in peace has he fishes the oceans of Heaven and watches over us all.

FUNDER'S SPOTLIGHT
Soroptimist House of Hope relies on the generosity of charitable foundations to provide grants that strengthen our ability to help women overcome substance use disorders. In just the past nine months, we have received grants totaling $137,244 from 12 funders! The Weingart Foundation awarded a two-year organizational support grant of $50,000, the Doyle Foundation provided $35,000 for our Desert Hot Springs Treatment Center, the Berger Foundation donated $15,000 for program services, and the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians doubled last year’s grant award to $10,000. Grants have also been awarded to us by Desert Healthcare District, Morongo Band of Mission Indians, Champions Volunteer Foundation, Laura May Stewart Foundation, Gannett Foundation - The Desert Sun, Grace Helen Spearman Charitable Foundation, and Smart & Final Foundation. We are honored to collaborate with our foundation partners to meet our shared goals, and we extend our sincere thanks to all of our supporters!

"I want to thank you for all that you do for all the women who go through the Soroptimist House of Hope. I had a 30-year drinking history. I lost my husband, son, job and home because of my alcoholism. I was homeless for about 3 years and my drinking got much worse. I was completely without hope that I could ever find a way off the streets or ever solve the drinking problem. Since completing the program here at SHOH, I have able to turn my life around. This house, the staff, the 12-Step program and of course God have given me a new life. I have tools that I so desperately needed to be better able to handle my thoughts and feelings.
