Keep your eye out, our beautiful ginkgo tree will drop all its leaves in one day. The Ginkgo is native to China and is found in fossils dating back 270 million years.
We'd love to know more about our Ginkgo tree, if anyone knows who planted it and when we'd love to hear about it. We think it's one of the most beautiful Ginkgo's around.

The Mystique of Women's Footwear
|
Sunday, November 3 1 - 3pm Community Center "Shoes and the Stories They Tell" is the title of an illustrated presentation by designer and author Linda O'Keeffe. The program is free and open to the public.
O'Keeffe presented her program in June to rave reviews for the New Canaan Museum and Historical Society, where the town's shoe industry is at the heart of the Museum's clothing and textile collection, housing nearly 400 shoes. "Linda proposed a similar program for her hometown library, and we are delighted at the idea," said Library program manager Diane DeChillo.
Linda O'Keeffe was creative director for Metropolitan Home for 16 years and currently writes for a variety of magazines. Her book, "Shoes," now in its 25th edition has been translated into several languages. In her talk, Linda will discuss footwear in a historic, political and personal context, citing examples from literature and myth. We'll learn about the variations of the Cinderella story that dates back to ancient Egyptian times, the particular mystery and magical powers of red shoes, the history of high heels, and much more.
As a special feature of the program, attendees are invited to bring in a shoe that has special meaning to them to share at the talk.

CLIO'S MUSE A History Reading Club |
Saturday, November 2 12:45pm in the Activity Room
The reading selection for November is
Jane Austen's England by Roy and Lesley Adkins. This non fiction book explores the customs and culture of everyday existence depicted in the England of Austen's classic novels.
Drawing upon a rich array of contemporary sources, including many previously unpublished manuscripts, diaries, and personal letters, the Adkins vividly portray the daily lives of ordinary people, discussing topics as diverse as birth, marriage, religion, sexual practices, hygiene, highwaymen, and superstitions.
Saturday, December 14
12:45pm in the Activity Room
The reading for December is
Leadership in Turbulent Times by Doris Kearns Goodwin. "In this culmination of five decades of acclaimed studies in presidential history, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Doris Kearns Goodwin offers an illuminating exploration into the early development, growth, and exercise of leadership. Are leaders born or made? Where does ambition come from? How does adversity affect the growth of leadership? Does the man make the times or do the times make the man? In Leadership in Turbulent Times, Goodwin draws upon four of the presidents she has studied most closely--Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Lyndon B. Johnson (in civil rights)--to show how they first recognized leadership qualities within themselves, and were recognized by others as leaders."

Every Saturday
10am-noon in the Activity Room
The Stone Ridge Library Knitters meet every Saturday morning from 10am - 12noon. All ages and experience levels can join us and drop-in knitters are also welcome. We each bring our own supplies and do our own work, but one of the best things about us is that whatever obstacle or confusion you might encounter, you're likely to receive as much comment and advice as you need to get where you're going with a project. Some of us can help toward the repair of knitted or crocheted items too.
The group is sociable and lively, and our conversation and sharing is just as wide-ranging as our projects. We are especially interested in the UFOs (Un-Finished Objects) that members bring in and love the show and tell of projects under way and being finished, new or old, simple or complex. Though knitting is our love and mainstay, we graciously adapt ourselves to stray crocheters and those of us who simply must take to the hook when the spirit moves. We share articles, magazines and books on knitting. Donations of yarn to the Library get made up into items for sale at the Library Fair and during the winter holidays for the benefit of the Library. Some of us also knit things for local hospitals or for the U.S. troops.
