Senior health featured at IPD

Health maintenance challenges facing senior citizens were the focus of the 2018 Winter Integrated Product Development course. Seven student teams presented their original products at the IPD Trade Show held in the STAMPS Gallery in downtown Ann Arbor on April 4. Faculty, students, industry representatives, and the general public tested out the products and cast votes for what they would choose to buy.
The brand new products included wheels that improve walker safety, nighttime lighting solutions, ways to connect with distant family and friends, balance improvement systems, and rising assistance for chairs and beds. When the votes were counted, all seven teams made a profit!

Tauber Solutions:
A Responsive Supply Chain

The Problem:  Erratic demand was causing increased backorders, production overtime, and superfluous expediting costs in 3M Automotive Aftermarket Division's abrasive product portfolio.  3M asked Kim Moore (MBA '18) and David Timmes (MBA '18) to grow the profitability of the abrasive  portfolio by increasing the responsiveness of the supply chain - aligning business functions and developing standardized processes for key metrics.
The Solution:  The Tauber team performed an analysis of historical sales, identifying items that consistently drove demand spikes. They developed a capacity planning tool to enable facilities to adjust production levels to prepare for increased demand, and designed a new business process to ensure coordinated procurement, production and logistics operations to support sales efforts. 3M's use of the Tauber team's findings and implementation of the new business process will drastically increase supply chain responsiveness and is expected to lead to cash savings of $2-6 million in safety stock reduction for the abrasives portfolio, plus annual cost savings of $1-4 million in overtime and expediting fees.
