Catholics in the firing line in Cameroon, as mass exodus continues

[T]he president of the Bishops' Conference, Archbishop Samuel Kleda, escaped what local media describes as an assassination attempt. Shots were fired at his residence after he criticised Cameroon's leader, Paul Biya, for his failure to broker genuine dialogue between the country's rival Anglophone groups and the Francophone-dominated government. In Cameroon, about 30 Xaverian Missionaries work for the formation of the laity and catechists, for the establishment of basic Christian communities, and for the training of Theology students.

Mayoress of Sierra Leone capital physically assaulted, action condemned
 
Yvonne Aki Sawyerr, mayoress of Sierra Leone capital, Freetown, was verbally and physically assaulted reports from the country have indicated.  Sawyerr according to some reports was attacked by members of the ruling Sierra Leones Peoples Party ( SLPP ). Learn more.

Since 1950, the Xaverian Missionaries have worked in the north of Sierra Leone, where the population is predominantly Muslim. We concentrated our attention on schools, provided programs for the poor, health care projects, a campaign to care for victims of leprosy, and rehabilitation of child soldiers following the civil war.
