St. Michael's Academy

Happy Spring (I think) !
We are happy to say that our IOWA testing has been completed. On the flip side, we are also heading into the toughest part of the school year. This is the time when new concepts are being introduced and the work is hard. If you combine that with longer daylight hours, the warmer temperatures outside, and the beginning of many sports programs, it gets increasingly harder for the students to concentrate and focus on schoolwork. A reminder from home to put schoolwork first and get a good night's sleep, will go a long way in helping everyone get through the next several months.
Next Wednesday evening, March 27th at 6 p.m., St. Michael's Academy will host an anti-bullying program entitled, "Bully-Proof Your School" presented by Mr. Jim Vagias. Mr. Vagias is a former teacher who specializes in anti-bullying programs. As a bonus, any student whose parent attends will receive a free dress down day! Please see additional details below.

Registrations Are Now Due!
The registration paperwork for the 2019-20 school year was sent home at the beginning of March with your child. It is
crucial that you return this paperwork by Friday, March 29th. After that time, your child will lose their classroom slot. We currently have almost 60 new students waiting to hear if they can be accepted. Current students are given first priority on available openings, but if we do not receive your paperwork before the deadline,
you will jeopardize your current classroom slot.
PLEASE return before the end of next week!

Cornhole Tournament!

The First SMA Cornhole Tournament!
St. Michael's Academy is hosting a Cornhole Tournament for alumni and current families on Saturday, June 8th beginning at 11:00 a.m. at Nathan Bill Park. We are encouraging all interested, and especially alumni, to form a team, come up with a creative team name and join us for an afternoon of spirited competition, along with food, fun and friendship!
Two food trucks, Foley's Franks from Northampton and Mr. Whippy's Ice Cream truck will be present from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three team winners.
Two amazing sets of handmade cornhole boards, one Patriot themed, will also be raffled off that day.

Celebrating 10 Years!
Can you believe that St. Michael's Academy is 10 years old this year? One of the festivities to help celebrate our anniversary will be a special gala event in our gym on Saturday, October 26, 2019. If you would like to be a part of the 10th Anniversary Gala Committee, please join us for our first planning meeting on Tuesday, April 2nd at 5 p.m.

Texas Roadhouse...Here We Come!
Want to have a great meal and build community (and earn some money for our school) ? Well here is your chance!
On
Monday, April 1st, Texas Roadhouse will be having a "Dine and Donate for St. Michael's Academy" night! Whether you dine in or take it to go, ten percent of what Texas Roadhouse brings in that evening will be donated back to St. Michael's Academy.
Mondays are also kid's night, Kids meals are only $1.99 and they will have a balloon artist there too!
So let's get our SMA family together and enjoy a great meal! Your child will be coming home with a flyer and that flyer MUST be presented to the server the evening of the event. They will NOT provide them at the door.

The Creation Story Inspires
Here in the art room of St. Michael's Academy, The Creation Story from The Book of Genesis, has inspired student artists to use their skills in representing the 7 days of creation.
As artists, they have been exploring the creation of the sun and moon, the heavens, oceans, and mountains, the creation of sea creatures, birds, mammals and humans and are using a variety of different media. From sketches to sculptures and paintings to comics, students at SMA have a wide array of delightful projects to feature how the creation story has encouraged them to be creative.
In preparation for Arts Night Out this upcoming May, students from Pre-K through 8th grade have viewed videos, images and other art examples that represent each day of creation. They were introduced to different artistic interpretations of the story and were motivated to sketch their favorite part, each one of them telling the story through their own eyes. These creation stories can be seen in the form of a comic book template, an oil pastel galaxy, an orange and yellow ombre sunset, a forest of trees and flowers, or mountain ranges and beaches. There are portraits of animals large and small, roaring waves on the beach, and drawings of God, our creator, forming all that we see with the wave of His hands.
Students continue their exploration of this theme through the formation of pattern, color, line, shape and texture, gaining experience in applying the elements of art that make their projects exceptional and elevates their talents of creating something from nothing. Starting from a blank page in the art room can often be a difficult task, but with the right inspiration and materials, children feel safe enough to try something they never thought that they could do. The result is a building of their confidence and their schema for the world around them.
My goal for this project is to instill in them that all that we see in the natural world was created by God, the ultimate artist and creator. As student artists, we can also create, shape and build anything that we put our mind to, regardless of challenges that arise. God has given us the gifts we need to explore them.
The art room is filled with all varieties of these sketches, collages, and watercolor paintings. They are amazing, unexpected and really a true reflection of our theme.

Are You Missing Anyt

Our Lost and Found bin is overflowing with items that students have lost. Please take a moment to check the bin if your child has lost anything. We even have a nice Hamilton Beach crockpot that needs to go back to its owner! It was brought in for the teacher's luncheon during Catholic Schools Week. If it's yours, you can claim it in the main office.
And speaking of losing things, please put your child's name or initials on articles for easy identification. We don't like to see your hard-earned money buy things that end up in the lost and found!

Pray The Rosary

Just a reminder that you are invited to join other parents to pray the rosary for our wonderful school - for our students, our families, and our teachers and staff. Please join us on Tuesdays at
8:30 a.m.
at Holy Cross Church. Rosaries and booklets will be provided. This is an ongoing group that meets every Tuesday.

St. Catherine of Siena
St. Catherine of Siena invites you to the
6th Annual Fish Fry on Friday, April 12th. Dinner includes a generous 1/2 lb. portion of fresh haddock, french fries, homemade coleslaw and a beverage.
Everything is fresh, fresh, fresh! Take-out is also available! Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for children 10 and under and may be purchased through the Parish Office or by contacting Maria or Stephen Wyszynski at (413) 374-5358.
St. Catherine's youth group will serve as waiters (which is filled with past and present St. Michaels students) for tips to support their group.

St. Catherine's also offers Lenten Lunches from 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. every Friday during Lent in the Parish Center, 1023 Parker Street. Meals include a homemade soup, sandwich, dessert and beverage. Don't you just love a bargain!!
