Distribution Centers!
Everyday, Insulectro's Heroes
You hear me talk with pride about our supply chain and our firm commitment to get your orders to you fast and with the least amount of effort on your part . Insulectro knows that your timely receipt of materials is mission critical to your ability to start a project or maybe even be considered for one.
Our procedure for order and delivery goes beyond some process chart . It’s a linkage of teammates, each with a specific job, handing off to the next expert until you receive your materials
Many of these teammates you know, either by face or voice, but there is a group of specialists you may never meet . A group at the end of the supply chain, in our Distribution Centers, who affixes a label proudly to your shipment and signs their name after achieving next day shipment, same day shipment, 6 hour shipment, 4 hour shipment, and even 2 hour shipment
These super Pumas do not have an easy job . They receive the order, pull it from the stacks, prepare the order for shipping (several steps involved here), and get it out the door using several types of carriers.
The truth is orders can be confusing . They often run late in the day . Everyone who has been involved with the order is anxious to get it out the door . Cut off times can get close. The big question - will it ship today?
This is where our Distribution Center teams step up to ensure every possible order goes out as planned, yet safely . It’s an extraordinary effort in all of our stocking locations every day by an incredible team of men and women
Next time, when that critical order arrives on-time and you see a scrawled signature on the shipment, think of the person who made it happen . Their contributions help us become the easiest company to do business with and to ensure you meet your business demands.

Isola Presents Its Vision of
Innovation at 2020 IPC APEX EXPO
Insulectro’s Power Chat program was very successful during IPC / APEX.  This program brought well respected speakers to the forefront to deliver a 13 minute burst of pertinent information to our guest attendees generating some in-depth side bar conversations.   Of special note was a presentation from Isola’s Chief Technology Officer, Ed Kelley.
The Market and Technology Focus presentation was well received and demonstrated an innovative approach to current and future market demands .  Market drivers for Wired Telecommunications and Computing, Wireless Telecommunications, and Automotive Electrification Markets were presented demonstrating his in-depth knowledge of the subject matter. Areas of growth included 5G telecom deployment, Satellite Internet, and Automotive Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). Automotive Radar Systems expected to grow 25% YoY, Kelley noted.

Isola will be presenting base material solutions for many of these wireless markets at the upcoming International Microwave Symposium this June in Los Angeles.

In addition, building on the very successful performance of the Tachyon® 100G platform, Ed presented TerraGreen® 400G under the banner of  coming attractions .   This system, expected to be rolled out by early 2021, offers up to 25% improvement in Db/in loss at 28 GHz and fits nicely into the 5G growth cycle.
It's a pleasure to work with Isola.

High Quality Foils from JX Nippon
We enjoyed having JX Nippon at our booth meeting with Customers and discussing new treatments and HA / HA-V2 Rolled Grade 8 copper. It was a great experience for our group as we do not see Grade 8 (Rolled Low Temp Annealable) copper in North America.
We typically see Grade 7 (Rolled Annealed) copper for flexible circuits.
We learned the main difference in Grade 8 vs. 7 is the grade 8 will withstand many more cycles of flexing before cracking due to its large grain structure . Also the BHM treatment with its copper makeup and .7 micron Rz allows for fast etch and very flat sidewalls allowing production of very fine line and space technology. The High Speed and RF folks love this very low Rz as well where low loss and signal integrity is a must . Available down to 6 micron thickness – give us a call we love to talk about this stuff!
Better flexibility and better etching means better circuits. All that makes me a better Joe.

New DuPont Screen-printed Polyimide Conductor and Dielectric Coverprint
[As presented in Power Chat™ at IPC by Robert Waldrop, DuPont MCM and part-time performer]

What does the DuPont Micro Circuit Materials Group do?  They make pastes for window defoggers on the rear window of your car, pasted for solar cells, membrane touch switched, bio test strips, hybrid circuits for high reliability applications such as engine control modules in cars or for satellite guidance systems.   They make ink for repeated elongation for wearables and inks that can formed and molded for in-mold electronic applications.

They are the oldest in this business, dating back to 1937 with DuPont 4817N and have over 1,100 products with Global production in US, China and Taiwan.  The headquarters as well as the R&D headquarters are located in Wilmington Delaware.

What problems need to be solved?  There is a need for a conductive and a non-conductive coverprint product that can be applied in an additive process, that meets the demands of high temperature, 300°C applications.   A product that can be printed without having to align parts or undergo die-cutting or lengthy high temperature lamination processes.  A product that can provide minimal RF loss while protecting circuitry with thin layers, <30 microns.

How is this new?  There are products that exist, polyimide materials; however, they use DMAC, dimethylacetamide which is teratogenic, mutagenic and carcinogenic. This solvent also attacks screen emulsions and is a threat to upper respiratory tract and nervous systems.  These reasons makes it impossible to work with in many businesses.

DuPont's new paste uses an environmentally friendly solvent that does not attack screens and does not harm the operator.

The new ink, DuPont KA702 has many attributes versus a traditional film approach :

Additive technology vs. subtractive processing:

  • Less Waste - only print where needed, less or no etching
  • Reduced processing time - no lamination time for a printed covercoat 30 minute drying step only
  • Reduced labor costs - fewer steps, no hand alignment is needed
  • No laser cutting - of the coverlay sheets is needed
  • No die-cutting - or stamping of the coverlay sheets is needed

The conductive product, DuPont KA802 also has several beneficial attributes:

High End-use Temperatures - up to and above 300 C for extended periods (300 C  for 7 days tested, no change in R or adhesion)

  • High Conductivity - 5–7 mohms/square@1 mil
  • Chemical Resistance - can be plated, resists most solvents
  • No Harmful Outgassing - previous generation had an issue
  • Additive Technology vs. subtractive
  • Less Waste - only print where needed, no etching
  • Reduced Labor Costs - fewer steps to make circuitry
  • Allows design changes - late in the process

The conductive product, DuPont KA802 is commercially available .  The coverprint, DuPont KA702 is in the last stages of testing and development.   Samples of both are available.  The datasheet for DuPont KA802 and test results for DuPont KA702 are available upon request.

PolarBack™ - A Most Excellent
Drilling Exit Material
PolarBack™ is LCOA’s melamine backup product . With PolarBack™, the HDF wood core is coated with a liquid melamine and cured in a tunnel oven, allowing the melamine coating to harden on the wood, creating an intimate bond between the melamine and the HDF .

The liquid melamine seals the HDF core , and because we never heat the HDF wood core, we do not drive out any of the moisture in the wood core. This new liquid coating seals the HDF which minimizes warpage, allowing the material to stay flat in most environments.

PolarBack™ provides for an excellent drilling exit material , producing stellar hole wall quality on parts that do not require lubrication, and is a very hard (>80 Shore “D”) and smooth surface that minimizes any exit burring . PolarBack™ is the best non-lubricated drill exit material you can find in the market today .

Eliminate Trapped Resist
Due to Overplating
Today’s high plating requirements and tight features are leading to more and more trapped resist in isolated areas . We have researched and tested many different dryfilms, chemistries, and equipment setups. All though many of the factors had an effect on the amount of trapped resist, only 1 factor eliminated it completely . That is  3mil dryfilm.  We have come up with a basic matrix for maximum plating capability in isolated areas.

  • 2mil resist for up to 2.5mils of overall plating
  • 2.5mil resist for up to 3mils or overall plating
  • 3mil resist for up to 4mils of overall plating
  • 4mil resist for up to 5mils of overall plating

99% of all isolated plating falls under 4mils.
Give me a call to discuss how we make you proud of your processes!

The People Behind the Puma
Meet Clarice Cordero
Supply Chain & Materials Group, Lake Forest CA
BIO:
I’ve been working for the Redfern Companies for 11 years. I thought I nailed my interview at first when I said my 10 year goal was to open up a microbrewery. Haha!

But I didn’t get the job and I had to write a letter to Patrick and convince him that I’m the perfect fit. And it worked! 😊

I started as a Quality Tech at LCOA and became Quality Manager for LCOA & CAC a few years later. Now, I’m in Supply Chain and part of the Materials Group and responsible for ensuring we have adequate stock levels of LCOA & CAC material in all the Insulectro branches.

I also manage LCOA raw materials, Insulectro Sheeted Copper as well as process LCOA & CAC International orders.
Clarice's story. . . and it's a doozy.
When you were a little girl, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be a flight stewardess since I wanted to travel around the world.

Are you more into food or convenience and why?
I’m pretty sure everyone that knows me know how much I love food!

If you could change careers tomorrow and money was no object, what would you go do?
I would be testing and tasting the goods in my microbrewery by the beach.

Describe a time at work when you were at wit’s end.
I can’t really remember. I know I get stressed out sometimes but I just go for a run or watch a hockey game and have some cold ones and then I forget what I’m stressed out about.

Describe a time at work when you beamed with pride.
Too many to mention. Just kidding. Most recent one was getting kudos from our international customers for getting their shipments out seamlessly.

Who is a role model for you and why?
My parents for raising 5 daughters who grew up to be respectful, independent and successful in their own ways.

What’s your go-to play vacation and why?
I love visiting my family in the Philippines. There’s also so many beaches there that I’ve never been to and I’d like to see them all.
If you suddenly inherited $10 million, name three things you would buy impulsively and three things you would take time to reflect over?
I would impulsively buy a 1967 Camaro, a beach house and an all expenses paid family vacation. But, I would give some thought into purchasing a restaurant franchise, a G wagon and a trip to Vegas.

Name one thing you really don’t want anyone to know about you. We promise not to tell. . .
I used to have a scrapbook and collect newspaper clippings of the Backstreet Boys . OK, lied about keeping that secret.

What’s the perfect Netflix night for you?
Currently, I’m into Ozark , Good Girls … I watched 7 seasons of Mad Men in a month.

What do you like most about your co-workers?
I like how we can joke around and at the same time work together as a team when things need to get done.

What do you like most about your customers?
I like when I get complemented about my work and they wish me to have a wonderful vacation when I go on my trips.

What advice would you tell a new teammate at your company?
To be patient and learn to be flexible and have fun.
What’s the last thing you’ll say on the day you leave the company?
Let’s go to Cabos! [neighborhood cantina]

Is there anything you binge on? Food, movies, vacations, etc.?
I binge on food (I love buffets!) and go on a lot of vacations.

What in your early life best prepared you for your job now?
I’ve always been meticulous and organized and I started in Quality at LCOA.

Name three traits that describe you.
I love to laugh. I’m very thorough, and I'm optimistic.

What has been the most embarrassing moment do far in your life.
I was getting my jersey signed by this hockey player and he asked me if I wanted him to put down his number. I thought he was hitting on me but he meant his jersey number.

How would you describe your sense of humor?
Took a quiz to answer this. Haha. It says I have a mostly affiliative sense of humor, meaning “good at cracking jokes and trading banter to build connections with other people.”

Give some advice for your next boss.
Get ready to approve at least 3 weeks of vacation a year. 😊
Insulectro Design & Education
at DesignCon and IPC APEX EXPO
As the new year takes stride the Insulectro Design and Education Team is running  PumaFast™ .

January hosts two of the electronics industry's larger but very different trades shows, DesignCon in San Jose and IPC APEX EXPO in San Diego . DesignCon is seeking to serve the higher scale engineering and development sector in our industry. From the moment the doors opened, the first day, it was clear there is a lot of interest in Insulectro's Design and Education program. [At DesignCon, Insulectro's Design & Education Product Manager Megan Teta, FAR LEFT, and Michael Creeden, FAR RIGHT]

At the show, we were able to see some of the new technologies in Quantum Engineering and high-speed data needs. These all brought some very focused interest in our product lines for Isola’s High Speed Laminates such as Tachyon® 100G, Astra® MT77 and DuPont’s Interra™ HK40 Embedded Capacitance material. The attending system integrators showed increased interest in the high-reliability of DuPont Pyralux® AP flex material as well.

With just enough time to catch our breath, the Sales and FAE team traveled south to San Diego’s IPC APEX show . Our week at DesignCon was a warm-up for the big game held in the week of APEX. Starting with football's big game on Sunday at the Pendry Hotel, Insulectro hosted a Super Bowl party attended by over 100 customers and the Insulectro team.

This provided a great way to meet and greet before the long week. The 2020 IPC show was one of the largest ever attended. With on-shoring being the trend in manufacturing, there was a good sense of expectation for the days ahead that was realized as the week unfolded. As APEX is a manufacturing-centric event, it brought everyone out to ensure they are prepared for the technology advancements that are before us .
Insulectro’s non-stop efforts to grab the attention of attendees by way of 13.5 minute Power-Chats, every 30 minutes, was just the needed draw to provide technical content and solutions to all who were seeking . Some of the attendees showed up with a very a defined list of solutions they were seeking. We marveled and wished everyone that visited were this focused, but most people showed up knowing the challenges they faced but were very eager to listen to the technical and sales experts showing solutions.

Isola’s diverse High-Speed product line was expanded to show the next generation offerings of TerraGreen® 400G . Soon-to-be-released IS550H was impressive for those seeking improvements in the thermal reliability sector.

There was great interest in Ormet’s Z-Axis Interconnect sintering paste . This was both from fabricators seeking to improve their ability to offer this solution and the design community that has an immediate need to solve their dense circuits. The DuPont products held great interest for product developers in the IOT sector looking for next generation solutions in PE Printed Electronics and flex/rigid circuits While all this was occurring on the showroom first floor, above on the second floor the exact same amount of space was required to host the professional development classes, awards ceremonies and committee meetings .
Insulectro’s own Technical Director of Design Education Mike Creeden was nominated to the position of assistant chairperson on the IPC-2221/2222 design standards committee and was presented an award for service in the Design Community.   ( Michael Creeden and IPC President John Mitchell pictured LEFT)
