Kerry Miller, UNMC
Kerry Miller is a development specialist and program evaluator in the Munroe-Meyer Institute at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.
Kerry's research focuses on Neonatal Intensive Care Unit infants, including whether NICU executive functioning predicts development outcomes and the relationship between sociodemographic and medical predictors, and NICU acceptance into early intervention services.
She also explores parent experiences with a family-centered approach to early intervention.

What is the future direction of your early childhood research?
I am interested in continuing to examine outcomes for NICU graduates and their families. Given the increasing number of NICU admissions across the country and the known developmental risks for this population, I would like to explore potential interventions — both during their NICU stay and post-discharge — that may have positive impacts on both child and family outcomes for this population of children.
Are there any new research projects or activities you are starting on?
Several NU researchers and I are collaborating with the Nebraska Departments of Education and Health and Human Services to examine family outcomes in the Part C early intervention program. My specific interest is to examine the relationship between the statewide implementation of evidence-based strategies (Routines-Based Interview and quality routines-based home visits) and parents’ perceptions of their self-efficacy related to early intervention.
Why is early childhood research important?
The attention given to the influence of children’s experiences in their early childhood years on both short- and long-term developmental outcomes has yielded much growth in early childhood funding and programs. Quality early childhood research is necessary to inform policy, practice and future research to ensure the best possible outcomes for children and their families.
