June 8, 2018

Hi all,

As the last days of school are dwindling down to zero (and for some of you, already done!), it's a great opportunity to say thanks to all of you who read our newsletter, stayed current with events, and were engaged in YOUR union's activities.

School may be over for another year, but we know many of you work hard at summer school, summer inservice, and/or other summer jobs. We hope you have a great "holiday!"

And please think about continuing or renewing your commitment to your union by attending any of the great opportunities for learning this summer (see below for info). At the very least, consider scheduling a 1-1 conversation with Dave, Kristin, or me so we can talk about YOUR Local and your plans for building power. We'll buy the coffee and we'd love to hear from you!

--Peace

Regional Director

Organizing Opportunities

There are a couple opportunities we wanted to share with you for partnership. Please drop Christina Brey at WEAC an email if you're interested:

NEA ORGANIZING COMMUNICATION TRAINING: If you or local leaders are interested, this is happening August 16-17 in a location TBD. This is trained by communications directors from other states, and is a cooperative effort of the NEA Organizing + Communications departments. Member leaders and affiliate staff work in teams on the following areas, around a common campaign they determine: 1.) Messaging; 2.) Story of Self-Us-Now/Theory of Change; 3.) Planning and Measurement; 4.) Digital Organizing; 5.) Action Network; 6.) Media. Travel and lodging are arranged and paid for by the NEA (excluding ground mileage or meals to-from airport). Breakfast/lunch is included, along with an evening meal August 16.

HUSTLE MASS TEXTING FOR LOCAL ASSOCIATIONS: We are looking for some pilot locals to get up-and-running on the Hustle platform. Local associations interested in using this easy tool should plan on a brief 30-minute overview/training before getting on-boarded, either at their local, piggybacked on an existing meeting in the region, or provided this via videoconference.

ACTION NETWORK TRAINING: WEAC is happy to set local associations up with Action Network accounts under the NEA/WEAC umbrella, and also help train or execute campaigns. Sidenote: This is not the best tool to replace member communications about elections, as great care needs to be executed to be sure you're not emailing non-members or school email addresses. But, it works very well for other organizing communications such as events, pledges/petitions and even weekly email updates.
Attention New Teachers & Early Career Educators

On June 11, in partnership with the NEA, the WEA Academy is promoting a webinar geared toward new teachers. Early career educators may want to tune in too. Register here.

The 2018 Summer Leadership Academy will return to UW-Eau Claire July 30-August 1. This year's Academy is a repeat of last year's conference but has taken on an entirely new look, as well as a new focus. We know that the strength of the State Association lies within the strength of each and every local. The Summer Leadership Academy is meant to empower the local leaders in their work with members, the community, administration, elected leaders and the students they serve on a day-to-day basis. A Special Election - Senate District 1
Tuesday, June 12

This is an 11.0101(10)(b)(1) communication with WEAC members

Why a special election?
In December 2017, Senator Frank Lasee left office to take on  the role of administrator for the state Department of Workforce Development Worker's Compensation Division. Governor Walker did not call for a special election for the Senate seat in time to hold the election along with other elections in April. Read more here.

Do I live in Senate District 1, and therefore am I eligible to vote?
It's pretty easy to see from the map above that everyone in DOOR COUNTY lives in Senate District #1. The other boundaries may mean, for example, that some residents of De Pere DO live in SD1 and others don't. You can enter your address into this database on MyVoteWisconsin to find out the names of all of your elected officials! (SD1 is currently listed as "vacant.")

Am I registered to vote? Where is my polling place?
Another place in MyVoteWisconsin gives you all the info you need to be an informed voter. Enter your name and birthdate into this database to find out if you are registered, where to vote, and request an absentee ballot if you plan to be on the beach on June 12! If you live in SD1 and you enter your name and birthdate into this database, you will see information related to the special election.

Who should I vote for?
Vote your conscience, of course. But you should know that WEAC and WEAC Region 3 have recommended Caleb Frostman.
