Student of the Week: Izaac Del Villar!
|
|
From the Spotlight:
"Izaac is a friendly and outgoing person that has an open mind about the people around him and welcomes new ideas and learns from others. He plays in the basketball team and was open minded about training and learning new skills. He receives good grades and loves to learn and correct his mistakes."
|
|
Izaac Del Villar, 7
th grader at Hogg Middle School is our Student of the Week because he exhibits the IB Learner trait of OPEN-MINDED! Izaac is on the basketball teams and enjoys playing football as well. He has lived in Houston all his life. His house were affected by Hurricane Harvey, but he states he is in a better place now. He has extended family in Mexico and enjoys visiting them.
Izaac believes he was chosen as OPEN-MINDED because he likes to try new things and is very optimistic. He is inspired by LeBron James because he is a good basketball player and smart. He admires how well LeBron James balances both and how he keeps his promises.
Izaac plans to go to Height High School and would like to attend the University of Houston so that he could stay close to his family. His goals include attending a good college, and playing an important role on their sports teams. His dream is to one day play for the NBA.
In his spare time, Izaac loves to play any sport with balls and run. He enjoys going on road trips to spend time with his family especially his brother who he tries to be a good role model for.

Staff of the Week : Ms. Carrillo!
|
|
From the Spotlight:
"Ms. Carrillo is such an amazing teacher. She imparts the information to the students in a way that makes them want to learn. She goes above and beyond to make sure they grasp the subject matter."
|
|
Ms. Melinda Carrillo, 8
th Grade Math Teacher at Hogg Middle School, is our Staff of the Week because she exhibits the IB Learner Trait of COMMUNICATOR! Ms. Carrillo has been at Hogg for 6 years and she is currently enrolled at University of Houston (Main Campus) where she is studying towards her principal certification. She states, “I love my family, fiancé and feel very blessed the way life is going for me; even it is a busy one.”
Ms. Carrillo believes she was chosen as COMMUNICATOR because of her promptness and intrapersonal skills. She works diligently to get things done while also helping her peers and students. Ms. Carrillo is inspired by her past and up-bringing. She states that several students at Hogg were raised the way she was, and it helps her to better connect with them and inspire/push them to value education.
Ms. Carrillo attended Brown Elementary, Marshall High School then graduated from Northside High School. She did not have plans to attend college, but she surrounded herself with the right people who pushed her to attend and graduate from Texas A&M University at College Station. She also earned her master’s degree from there as well.
Her goals are to become a leader of educators in empowering ALL students regardless of background! Her hobbies include traveling, baby-sitting, running and watching scary movies.

Student of the Week Correction from March 8.
Our previous Student of the Week, Antony Villanueva, is a 6th grader, not an 8th grader! If you ever have the pleasure of meeting this young man, you could easily make the same mistake. He's both mature beyond his years and very tall! :)

Have You Heard About Hogg's One Book One School?
|
|
This year's One Book One School (1B1S) is
Greetings From Witness Protection!
by Jake Burt.
Thanks to the Hogg PTA, EVERY Hogg Family will own this book by next Tuesday! (Hogg families with siblings will share the book.)
Along with our 1B1S there will be fun, 1B1S-related activities during breakfast and lunch. Some activities like "Bring Your stuffed Animal to School Day" are for everyone to participate. Other activities require the students to answer a 1B1S-trivia question to participate, which requires them to have read the book. So, encourage your child to read it. Better yet, read it WITH your child!
The book comes with a bookmark like the one to the left. It lists the activities and how far in the book your child should read in order answer the trivia questions to participate.
Today was "Bring Your Stuffed Animal to School Day". The main character in the book, Nicki, is a foster child and has few precious possessions, one of which is her stuffed animal, Fancy Paws. Fancy Paws ends up playing a role later in the book. Read with your child to find out more!
These activities will culminate in
Hogg's 2nd Annual Literacy Night, which is
Tuesday, April 16th. There will be loads of fun activities for you and your family to enjoy.
Adorable pictures of Hogg students with their stuffed animals are at the bottom of this newsletter.

7th Grade Activism Fair Huge Success!
7th Grado Activismo Feria Enorme Exito!
|
|
As the culminating activity for their Activism Incubator Unit (almost three months in the works!), the 7th Grade Activism Fair gave students the opportunity to shine. The Activism Unit required students to investigate, research, plan, communicate and reflect about Global Contexts such as fairness and a hopeful future.
Not only did the 7th grade participate, but the 6th and 8th grade Language Arts classes visited the fair and were able to participate in interactive stations, such as Ocean Clean-Up with drones and hands-on activities, such as writing post cards to representatives and donating free rice to the World Food Program at
freerice.org. (We collectively donated more than 100,000 grains of rice!)
We look forward to next year and seeing what the current 6th graders will bring!
