Dear SB Readers,
Well, no Kenya this month. She burned
her paws running around th
e pool on the hot cement and can't type.
No Roscoe either. We put the basset hound on a diet last week, but he sneaks up on every dog dish, and eats out of Shadow the husky's bowl more often than not--and is getting fatter. His nickname is now "P
ork Chop." We sent him away to a Slimming Salon for overweight
hounds.
NEW WEBSITE!
At long last, we have launched our new website! It is long overdue.
The original was built 14 years ago, and has been jury-rigged since that time by various coder folks. It was not mobile-friendly, and it was time to get this matter taken care of. So we did.
The web address, of course, is the same:
www.savasbeatie.com. We have streamlined our presentation, and offer a variety of special features we think you will enjoy, including but not limited to:
1. SIGN IN: Set up a secure account and track your orders, set up a wishlist, see recently viewed titles, and more! In addition, if you set up an account you get ...
2. A REWARD PROGRAM: E
arn SB Reward Points for a host of things, like setting up an account, sharing information with social media, placing orders, and much more! Spend those points on our books!
3. Social Media: Share anything you purchase or do on our site with Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, etc.
4. Leave Reviews!
Review a book on our site so others can see and read it, and then share it. Why? Because of you enjoy reading good Civil War books and other historical genres, supporting independent publishing is very important.
5. Flat-rate Postage! For 45 days, we will be implementing a full month of flat-rate shipping. If it is successful, we may extend it, so your feedback is important. So here's the deal: Order one book, and your shipping is $5.00 USPS media mail. Order five books, and your shipping is...$5.00. Yeah, that's a pretty good deal.
There is much more, including better book sorting/searching, and a blog that will have updates from several of the folks here at Savas Beatie.
WIN A FREE BOOK!
It's this simple:
1. Visit our website;
2. Set up an account (it is free, and we do not need any payment information);
3. Email us
HERE and tell us what you like about the new site.
That's it.
We will enter your name in a drawing and if you are selected, you get your choice of one of the following books, FREE:
Swing over and give us a visit, check out the site--and maybe win a free book!
WHAT A BOOK RELEASE!
The inaugural talks were at the
1842 Inn
in Macon. The mansion (now a lovely bed and breakfast) is where LeRoy was born, raised, wrote, suffered, and died (1847-1865). As soon as we arrived, Keith, the home's caretaker, showed us a previously unpublished image of LeRoy at about 4, his brother Thomas (6), and faintly, his mother Mary peeking out from behind a shutter. It will be in the next printing (which is at the printer now).
We spent the night there, and spoke and signed books the next day. Some 85 people streamed in, filled the main center hallway, spilled out the door and onto the porch and down the steps. It was amazing and humbling.
Keith and I also discussed the vantage point from which LeRoy watched Sherman's men attacking Macon in 1864. He thought it was the front second-story balcony. It wasn't. He had watched it from the roof. A surprised Keith slipped me into LeRoy's father's bedroom, pushed open a corner panel, and revealed a hidden set of steps leading there. LeRoy (an invalid and dying) was carried up them. Together, Keith and I went to the roof, where I enjoyed the same vantage point young LeRoy had.
HIS DIARY:
"Saturday November 19th 1864: ... I went on the house to look at the batteries. Last night we could see the gleaming of the campfires. The yankees burnt the business part of Atlanta before leaving and these fires caused the stories about its evacuation. . . . Every man who is able is ordered within the trenches and if they would go, Macon might yet be saved. And if Macon is taken it seems to me Sherman might be greatly damaged, if not entirely defeated, if proper efforts were made for reinforcements. Julia Ann + Mary hid a barrel of sugar + two cans of lard under the house. Judge Holt's folks left in the carriage today. Some of the neighbors are not going to run + I am glad of that."
Later that day we visited the hauntingly beautiful Rosehill Cemetery and the Gresham family plot. It was very moving.

The War Outside My Window Recap
|
From the launch event in Macon at the 1842 Inn to the Walker County Historical Society in LaFayette, and every site in between a big "thank you" for hosting successful events for The War Outside My Window. The Central Georgia Genealogical Society in Warner Robins drew a great crowd where we met a lot of folks who are interested in creating another leg of a Georgia tour later this year. CSPAN covered the event at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library where there was a lively Q&A, presentation, and book signings.
Teachers are calling, emailing, and sending us messages on Facebook about using this book to teach the Civil War, so we are preparing LESSON PLANS now.
This book has generated a lot of national press--and it keeps coming. Blogger HC Newton, aka "The Irresponsible Reader," a non-Civil War reader, was one of the first to be charmed by LeRoy's account, Emily Jennings with the Freelance-Star (Fredericksburg, VA) wrote an insightful piece, Rea Andrew Redd (a Civil War specialist) left an insightful post on his blog "The Civil War Librarian," breaking down the book like no one else has to date. The links for these posts are below:

The Dunker Church is one of the most iconic structures of the American Civil War. With this book, readers will learn about its fascinating story and the role it played within the community of Sharpsburg and its importance during and after the Battle of Antietam. |

WHAT IS THE NATIONAL TRIBUNE?
The National Tribune was the premier Union veterans' newspaper of the post-Civil War era (1877 - 1943). The NT published firsthand accounts by the veterans themselves (including privates to generals), and did so for decades thereafter (including some Confederate material). This rich, overlooked, and underused source of primary material offers a goldmine of eyewitness accounts of battles, strategy, tactics, camp life, obituaries, general articles, observations, debates, and much more.

ABOUT: The 7th, 8th, 9th, and 11th Georgia infantry regiments spent most of the Civil War fighting under Brig. Gen. George Thomas "Tige" Anderson in Gen. Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. Until now, no biographical roster of their members has ever been published. These Georgians saw it all, from the bloody battle of First Manassas through the ferocious combat of Second Manassas, Sharpsburg, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and the long siege of Petersburg. They finally furled their banners at Appomattox. Nearly 5,000 men passed through these four Georgia regiments. These rosters offer a long overdue record of these men.
Each roster is organized by company in a simple and easy-to-use format. Entries feature full names (if known), promotions, demotions, casualties, transfers, and resignations for every rank-an unprecedented look into men and the structure and evolution of these organizations. They include the most comprehensive examination of the personnel originally enlisted and their subsequent service histories within these units in chronological order for the first time.
Compiler and author Richard Allen has spent nearly two decades researching scores of archives and other sources to prepare these rosters. He utilized primary sources such as the Official Records, Compiled Service Records, newspaper accounts, diaries, letters, census information, burial records, and a variety of documents from both published sources and private collections. Students of the Civil War, genealogists, and enthusiasts of Georgia history will find these rosters invaluable. Everyone who uses them owes Rick Allen a hearty, and heartfelt, "thank you!"
ABOUT THE AUTHOR: A 1990 graduate of the Maryland Institute of Art,
Rick Allen is a lifelong student of the American Civil War. The Maryland native spent a large part of his youth roaming the battlefields of the Eastern Theater and has remained a student of the Civil War ever since. He spent fifteen years researching the history and composition of the men who composed the four Georgia infantry regiments featured in these rosters.
And speaking of the author, Rick broke new ground by sending me a bottle of outstanding gin as a way of saying thanks for publishing his roster. What a quality guy (for a Ravens fan). I appreciate the gesture, Rick. It was my pleasure.
