In response to the novel coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19), researchers at the University of Maryland's A. Jame s Clark School of Engineering are working tirelessly to create solutions and pool resources in efforts to minimize the spread of the disease, provide critical aid to health care workers and their patients, and monitor the impact of social distancing and travel restrictions.

Here are just a few of the response efforts being led by Clark School faculty, staff, and students in collaboration with clinical, industry, and government partners:

Professor Robert Briber has been named Interim Dean of the University of Maryland’s A. James Clark School of Engineering, effective April 1, 2020. Dr. Briber will replace Professor Darryll Pines, who will step down from his role as Dean of the college on March 31, 2020, to prepare for his new role of 34th President of the University of Maryland, College Park.

The University of Maryland’s A. James Clark School of Engineering is ranked a top 20 program for graduate-level engineering in the U.S. by U.S. News & World Report in their 2021 rankings report. The Clark School and six of its departments saw a jump in their rankings from 2020 to 2021, a testament to the college’s commitment to innovation, excellence, and fearlessness in its graduate education and research.

The Clark School announced the launch of the Center for Materials Innovation (CMI), a multidisciplinary research center that aims to encourage collaboration between UMD faculty members and national partner institutions to invent, manufacture and use innovative materials addressing current global challenges, from sustainability and the energy–water nexus, to energy efficiency and beyond.

The Clark Doctoral Fellows Program was launched in 2017 to support high-performing engineering Ph.D. students at the A. James Clark School of Engineering as part of a $219.5 million investment by the A. James & Alice B. Clark Foundation.
