County Executives Get Candid at Regional Economic Forum

We decided to change things up this year by re-imagining our annual Legislative Wrap-Up Breakfast as a Regional Economic Forum with County Executives Allan Kittleman, Steve Schuh and Ike Leggett.

Howard, Anne Arundel and Montgomery Counties are all linked geographically of course, but the connection between the counties is about more than just location. All three County Executives explained that working together on common interests is a win for everyone.
This was most evident when the hot topic of the moment, Amazon's search for HQ2, was brought up by moderator Mike Kelly, Executive Director of the Baltimore Metropolitan Council.

When asked about Montgomery County's place on the top 20 list of locations still in the running, County Executive Kittleman was quick to say that as soon as that top 20 list was released, "I was on team Ike. Amazon has to see that we're all in this together." Indeed the subject of Montgomery County's selection was something all three County Executives could agree would be good for the entire region.
Another area of agreement was the need for more efficient public transportation, funding for road repairs, and the idea that we need to get people out of cars. Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett remarked that "It'll get worse before it gets better." But he also said that the first step to reducing congestion on the regions' highways is to ensure that what we already have is working, referring to METRO.

All three County Executives could also agree that an area where Howard, Anne Arundel, Montgomery and Baltimore City must work together is the fight against the opioid epidemic. County Executive Kittleman says that he is in regular contact with Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh and that they are all working in close coordination to break up drug distribution networks that spread dangerous drugs into all of our communities. Anne Arundel County Executive Steve Schuh echoed the comments and explaining that with Anne Arundel County's proximity to the city, it is vital for him to work with Mayor Pugh and coordinate law enforcement efforts.
In addition to hearing from the three County Executive's this morning, Lawrence Richardson, VP of Government Affairs for the Maryland Chamber of Commerce walked attendees through a summary of the most important pieces of legislation to come out of the latest session in Annapolis including the passage of the Maryland Healthy Working Families Act.

Chamber President Leonardo McClarty wrapped up the productive and informative discussion by thanking the County Executives, and thanking the Chamber's Annual Partners, including BGE, the Premiere Sponsor of the event.
