March 2019

I glanced out the window at the signs of spring, the sky was almost blue, the trees were almost budding, the sun was almost bright.
-Millard Kaufman

Have no fear! We all survived Snowpocalypse 2019! This March has been one of the snowiest March's on record with most ski areas in Summit County reporting 80+ inches of snow in the first two weeks alone. Roads were closed and school cancelled as the storms made their way though our mountains. Not only has this been one snowy winter but we were also witness to a historic avalanche cycle, with 500 avalanches being reported between March 1st and March 9th, according to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center. One such avalanche tore a scar down Peak One and has been the talk about town. With all the snow 2019 has brought us we are looking forward to watching the reservoir fill and stay full for the majority of the upcoming summer.

The Clock is Ticking

Photos: Craig Simson

Earlier this month the Summit County Rotary along with the Summit County Sheriffs Office took the much anticipated Ice Melt device and clock out to the middle of Lake Dillon.

For the uninitiated, here's how it works: every year we haul a giant drum out to the middle of Lake Dillon. Attached to said drum are watches. When the ice gives way, the clocks go under water and stop working. Locals, visitors, and other astute guessers (such as yourself!) use a mixture of past drop-times, skill, and luck to predict the exact time the clock will drop. The winning guess gets a hefty cash prize and endless bragging rights. The contest closes Sunday April 14th (or earlier if the clock drops before the 15th). Enjoy beer, food and live music.

Free Concert Series
Friday and Saturday Nights, 7:00 pm
Dillon Amphitheater

Join us this summer for our Free Concert Series with music from local favorites to nationally known artists. Come enjoy live music, adult beverages and food provided by local vendors. Wow.......so that's a "Bomb Cyclone." If you haven't heard, this has been a historic March for snowfall. This month we have been front and center for some of the biggest avalanches since the 1950's; Peak One has a new avalanche scar down the North side and the "S" in the famous Sky Chutes near Copper Mountain now reaches all the way to Highway 91. Now and then (or most afternoons in the High-Country Summer) Mother Nature shows her power and reminds us to look up and be humble. Probably one of the biggest reasons I enjoy sailing so much.

We continue to be busy down here at the Marina. Jared has the shop buzzing with fiberglass repairs and rigging jobs; Shannon is always rocking with retail, rentals, slip renewals and taking care of all of us; and the ice fishing boom keeps the grounds hopping.

Last Saturday, March 16th, Big Ed's Fishing Ventures, one of our  awesome guiding companies, sponsored a fundraising benefit for "Extended Hands of Hope." This is a non-profit organization that offers safe housing and supportive services to sex trafficking survivors. The ice down by F dock was alive with over 50 participants ice fishing and enjoying a blue bird day for a great cause. The event was a great success and the sunburns were well earned.

Guess what F-Dock.............YOU GET A GANGWAY! Dillon Town Council approved funding for a brand new, shiny gangway to keep our F-Dock customers out of the mud at low water and push the dock another 90 feet into deeper water. We will be receiving, assembling and installing this new addition this spring and will have it in place as soon as possible. The great news is the reservoir is expected to be full by June and remain full throughout our operating season. WHEW!!

I hope the longer days are getting you as excited as I am for summer. Remember, DO EVERYTHING SHANNON SAYS and you should all be here EVERY THURSDAY EVENING for the Thursday Night Cruiser Series. First one should be June 20th, 2019.
Have a wonderful April!

It's March Madness here in the office!
The busy summer is a breeze compared to March at the marina, at least for the office. No successful boating season can become reality without the behind-the-scenes work over the winter months, and March is the month of madness...err...I mean magic!

To you, March might be all about filling out those brackets! For the marina office, it's the deadline for slip renewals, on-boarding new customers, the start-up of the boat rental booking season, the employee application and interviewing process, the marina retail order deadlines, work order submissions and a few dozen other things floating around on my desk, not to mention inside my head. But it's all about creating an amazing summer!

Speaking of an amazing summer... There will be no shortage of opportunities to get out on the water this season.

Celebrating a birthday, graduation, wedding or just want to chill with family and friends?
We now have 3 sizes of pontoon rentals to accommodate your group.
