Mark Your Calendar: Manufacturing Day is October 5 DFARS

Manufacturing Day is a celebration of modern manufacturing meant to inspire the next generation of manufacturers. While MFG Day is officially October 5 across the country, in Illinois we celebrate it  the entire month of October.

Last year, metro Chicago hosted 66 events throughout the region, up from 43 in 2016. If you have been thinking about participating, this is a great opportunity to help solve your worker shortage. Encourage local students (and their parents) to consider careers in manufacturing by opening your doors and showing them that 21st century manufacturing is much cooler and well-paying than they think!

Contact us if you want to plan your first MFG Day event. We can help connect you with your local high school and partners to take the first step in cultivating your future workforce!

The SmartForce Student Summit at IMTS aims to inspire students to pursue a career in manufacturing through multiple interactive sessions in 3D printing, robotics, STEM, exposing them to makers and innovators, and introducing them to the industrial internet of things (IIoT) and how it's completely reshaping manufacturing as we know it. Manufacturing Jobs Exist. How Do We Fill Them?

A new study by the UIC Great Cities Institute and the Century Foundation found that there are two openings for every hire in manufacturing. The problem is there are not qualified workers to fill those open positions because young people are not prepared with the right skills for jobs in manufacturing. Leaders met at UIC last month to try to figure out how to close this gap. Read the Chicago Tribune editorial "Wanted: Workforce for 'The City That Makes Things'" to learn more about this call to action.

Industry-Led Sector Partnerships Meet in Chicago

Mollie Dowling, executive director of CMISP convening partner organization OAI, Inc., welcomes participants
CMMC and its partners serve as conveners of the Calumet Manufacturing Industry Sector Partnership (CMISP). Launched from the Next Gen Sector Partnership model, CMISP aims to improve the competitiveness of metal, machinery and equipment manufacturers in the Calumet region. Similar partnerships have taken shape across the country and many of them came together on June 27 to share best practices and learn from one another.

Manufacturer-led action teams have focused on 1) developing future talent by partnering with local high schools to host job fairs and develop training curriculum, and 2) developing business to business networking opportunities by hosting tours of local manufacturers and creating communication platforms between manufacturers. Over 30 manufacturers have participated in CMISP so far. Interested in joining our next event? Contact us for more info.

The  Chicago Metro Metal Consortium (CMMC)  works to strengthen the region's 4000 metal and machinery manufacturing firms CMMC offers manufacturers the tools, services and resources to improve and grow their businesses through collaboration and networking, market intelligence, and promotion of the region as the nation's leading center for manufacturing.
