Welcome to our Cancer Prevention and Control (CPC) quarterly newsletter. The goal in producing this newsletter is to keep our members informed and involved. We are highlighting opportunities for collaborations, new funding opportunities, new grants and promotions, new personnel, and upcoming seminars and events. We always welcome your suggestions and contributions for future issues.

Anita Y. Kinney, PhD, RN
Aiming to reduce cancer risk, improve the understanding of cancer outcomes, and promote cancer health equity in our most vulnerable populations at the community level, the Rutgers School of Public Health and Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey have recruited Anita Y. Kinney, PhD, RN, as Director of the Center of Cancer Health Disparities at the Rutgers School of Public Health and Associate Director of Cancer Health Equity and Engagement at Rutgers Cancer Institute. Trainee Seminar Series

Annie Yang, second year medical student , Rutgers New Jersey Medical School (NJMS), presented at the Rutgers Cancer Institute Trainee Seminar Series on her summer fellowship work with Dr. Jennifer Tsui on August 3rd. Yang also presented at the New York Academy of Medicine in New York City on August 9th. Yang's talks were entitled, " Patterns of End-of-Life Care among New Jersey Medicaid Beneficiaries with Advanced Breast and Colorectal Cancer."

Monthly Meeting - August

Kathryn L. Greene, PhD, MA, Professor, Department of Communication, Rutgers University presented at the CPC Monthly Meeting on August 13, 2018. Dr. Greene's talk was entitled, “Active Involvement in Intervention Development: A Brief Media Literacy Approach to Adolescent Substance use Prevention.”

Monthly Meeting - July

Kuang-Ti Wen, PhD , Assistant Professor, Cancer Prevention and Control Program, Fox Chase Cancer Center was the guest speaker for the CPC Monthly Meeting on July 17, 2018. Her talk was entitled, " A Text Messaging-based Intervention for Breast Cancer Patients Receiving Chemotherapy: Study Findings and Lesson Learned. "

Grand Rounds

Jonine L. Bernstein, PhD , Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Program Co-leader, Population Sciences Research Program, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center was the guest speaker for the Rutgers Cancer Institute Grand Rounds on June 20, 2018. Dr. Bernstein's talk was entitled, " The Genetic Epidemiology of Radiation Associated Contralateral Breast Cancer ."
Anita Kinney, PhD, RN,  Professor and Director, Center of Cancer Health Disparities at the Rutgers School of Public Health and Associate Director of Cancer Health Equity and Engagement at Rutgers Cancer Institute presented at the European Society of Health Psychology Presentations on August 23 & 24, 2018 in Galway, Ireland. Her talks were entitled, " Colorectal cancer survivors’ interest in genomic testing to guide communication about recurrence risk managemen t" (Symposium) and " Feasibility Randomized Trial of Risk Communication Interventions for Promoting Cancer Genetic Risk Assessment ."
M. Jane Lewis, DrPH , Associate Professor, Rutgers SPH, presented at the Partner Information X-Change 2018: Building Strong Foundations for Tobacco Control on August 7, 2018 in Indianapolis, IN. Her talk was entitled, " That’s a Tobacco Product?"
Cris Delnevo, PhD, MPH, Professor and Director of the Center for Tobacco Studies, Rutgers SPH, was an invited presenter and group facilitator at the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) E-cigarette Subcommittee of the Tobacco and Nicotine Research Interest Group Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS) Measurement Workshop which was held at NCI’s Shady Grove campus in July, 2018.
Cris Delnevo, PhD, MPH, Professor and Director of the Center for Tobacco Studies, Rutgers SPH, and Olivia Wackowski, PhD, MPH , Assistant Professor, Rutgers SPH presented at the NIH Tobacco Regulatory Science Conference, Bethesda, MD, June 2018. Their talks were entitled, "Impact of e-cigarette warnings on young adults’ e-cigarette perceptions and use intentions" and " Impact of cigarillo packaging characteristics on consumer perceptions ."
Adana Llanos Wilson, PhD, MPH, Assistant Professor, Rutgers SPH presented at the Flash Talk: 2018 NCI Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities (CRCHD) Professional Development Workshop in Rockville, MD on June 28, 2018. Her talk was entitled, “Leptin and Leptin Receptor Expression: Associations with Breast Cancer Clinicopathology?”
Awards and Honors
Rutgers Names Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs

Kitaw Demissie, MD, PhD , Rutgers School of Public Health was appointed to the role of Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs.

In Dr. Demissie's new role as Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs, he will join the leadership of the school and manage faculty appointments, reappointments, and evaluations; assist in hiring, retention, and promotion; implement strategies to enhance faculty diversity; develop and implement systems to support faculty mentoring; and other duties to ensure faculty success. Rutgers Faculty Receives Excellence in Research Award from New Jersey
Health Foundation

Adana Llanos Wilson, PhD, MPH, Assistant Professor, Rutgers SPH, has received the 2018 Excellence in Research Award from the New Jersey Health Foundation. D r. Llanos, a molecular epidemiologist, is an Assistant Professor of Epidemiology and full member of the Cancer Prevention and Control Research Program . Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey-Newark
at University Hospital receives full accreditation

Stanley H. Weiss, MD, FACP, FACE, Professor, Department of Medicine, Hematology/Oncology served as one of the key personnel for the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey-Newark at University Hospital, also serving as the Cancer Liaison Physician & Oncology Committee Vice-chair. The site was visited in June 2018 by the Commission on Cancer, and was awarded full accreditation with five commendations.
New York Academy of Medicine (NYAM) Margaret E. Mahoney Fellowship Award

Annie Yang, second year medical student (pictured left), Rutgers New Jersey Medical School was awarded the New York Academy of Medicine (NYAM) Margaret E. Mahoney Fellowship Award for su mmer 2018 under the guidance of Dr. Jennifer Tsui on the New Jersey Medicaid Cancer Cohort Study.

$3M Grant Supports Rutgers Initiative to Study
Tobacco 21 Laws: NCI Grant funding may aid in strengthening policy to impede tobacco use and improve the health of young people

Cris Delnevo, PhD, MPH, Professor and Director of the Center for Tobacco Studies, Rutgers SPH, and Shawna Hudson, PhD , Professor and Research Division Chief, Family Medicine and Community Health, Rutgers RWJMS have been awarded an R01 entitled “ Adoption, diffusion, and implementation of Tobacco 21 policies to address health disparities.

Using this new grant, researchers from Rutgers School of Public Health, Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey will examine how the adoption, implementation and maintenance of these policies impacts public health outcomes, while also using the evidence to determine the impact on racial and ethnic disparities. Sharon Manne, PhD , Professor of Medicine and Associate Director of Cancer Prevention, Control and Population Research at Rutgers Cancer Institute has been awarded a National Cancer Institute(NCI), National Institutes of Health (NIH) R01 grant entitled, " Facebook Intervention for Young Onset Melanoma Patients and Families."

Dr. Jesse Plascak has been awarded a National Cancer Institute (NCI) K07 Career Development Grant titled " Social Environmental Factors, DNA methylation of inflammation genes and Breast Cancer Survivorship among African American Women ."

Dr. Weiss has received two one-year grants as Principal Investigator: 1) NJ Department of Health, Office of Cancer Control & Prevention for a 16 th year of continuous funding, " Essex Passaic Chronic Disease Coalition" (a.k.a. Essex-Passaic Wellness Coalition, (EPWC), the successor to the Essex County Cancer Coalition 2) “NJ Methadone Maintenance Subject Recruitment for Genomic Analyses and Repository Expansion.”
