Services after Age 22
As a parent, advocate, and individual with a disability, up until age 22 you have been or will be accessing supports and services through the IDEA law and often through school based supports. Once an individual exits and/or ages out of school based supports, supports, services, and legal guidelines are provided under ADA law. There are many differences between IDEA and ADA, specifically looking at the difference between entitlement (IDEA) vs. access (ADA). To read more on specific differences in regards to post-secondary education, please use the following link for guiding documents: https://d86.hinsdale86.org/Page/1260 .
How does this affect adult service agencies and supports?
Any adult service agency will have specific guidelines and eligibility requirements established for individuals with disabilities wanting to access services. Typical requirements may be things such as: specific disability labels, various levels of independence, medical needs, medicaid qualification, behavioral levels, etc. Many agencies are very upfront about such requirements/qualifications and if not listed on their website, can easily be answered by their intake coordinators.

The most important step for parents/guardians seeking adult services is to start early , be honest about your young adult’s needs, and tour many places. Many adult services agencies often time have not only a wait list, but also a mandatory trial period. Even if selected for funding from PUNS, it is up to the individual family to seek, determine, and gain placement within a specific adult service agency.

Your ISC agent assigned to you either through DayOne PACT or Suburban Access can be a great resource for assisting you with identifying appropriate service entities..
