2019 International Symposium on Biomedical Imaging (ISBI)
 Call for Papers

The IEEE International Symposium on Biomedical Imaging (ISBI) is a scientific conference dedicated to mathematical, algorithmic, and computational aspects of biological and biomedical imaging, across all scales of observation. It fosters knowledge transfer among different imaging communities and contributes to an integrative approach to biomedical imaging. ISBI is a joint initiative from the IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) and the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS). The 2019 meeting will be held in Venice, Italy and will include tutorials, challenges and a scientific program composed of plenary talks, invited special sessions, as well as oral and poster presentations of peer-reviewed papers.

Cardiopulmonary Systems Technical Committee



Members of the Cardiopulmonary Systems technical committee are organizing various sessions in the upcoming EMBC'18 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Michael Khoo (USC) and Thomas Penzel (Charite Hospital, Berlin) are organizing and will chair a series of 3 mini-symposia sessions covering the theme: TOWARDS "P4 MEDICINE" IN SLEEP THERANOSTICS. The 3 sessions are: (1) Novel methods for OSA diagnostics; (2) Advances in sleep monitoring and sleep physiology; and (3) Phenotyping and personalized theranostics for OSA. Speakers include CPS TC members such as: Philip DeChazal, Raimon Jane and Ainara Garde. The mini-symposia series will be sponsored by the USC Biomedical Simulations Resource (EMBC'18 bronze partner).

Omer Inan (Georgia Tech) and Ramakrishna Mukkamala (Michigan State Univ) are organizing 2 mini-symposia sessions titled "Recent Challenges and Advances in Cuffless Blood Pressure Measurement". These sessions will bring together international leaders in the field of cuffless blood pressure measurement to discuss recent advances and challenges in the field. Specifically, there will be a strong focus on the challenge of calibration and improved technologies hypertension screening. Since cuff-based systems for home measurement of blood pressure are based on oscillometry and thus can be highly inaccurate, cuffless systems for measuring blood pressure at home can potentially provide great benefit to patients and reduce mortality rates. Additionally, cuff-based systems are inconvenient and not amenable to ambulatory use; wearable cuffless systems that can provide frequent measurements throughout the day could allow for ambulatory measurements in a convenient form factor.

2018 IEEE Life Sciences Conference

The workshop, initiated and supported by the IEEE Life Science Committee, intends to bring together world leading experts in the areas of engineering and medicine in scuba diving, space and tactical and emergency services. The audience will have the opportunity to see presentations about the fundamental medical concepts of physiological adaptation, as well as technological advances to assess physiological monitoring in these extreme environments and to process acquired data.

The Life Sciences Conference website is now open to accept Special Session and Tutorial proposals. Short Papers (abstracts) and full papers are now open for submission as well.

 2018 - Issue 1 Now Available

BrainInsight is a quarterly online publication, featuring practical and timely information and forward-looking commentary on neurotechnologies. BrainInsight describes recent breakthroughs in research, primers on methods of interests, or report recent events such as conferences or workshops.

 A CRISPR Approach For a Common Inherited Disease
RESEARCHERS AT DUKE UNIVERSITY HOPE GENE EDITING CAN ELIMINATE MUTATIONS THAT LEAD TO DUCHENNE MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY

Gene editing and CRISPR typically target disease-causing mutated genes by eliminating the bad gene altogether, by correcting the problem DNA to restore proper gene functioning, or by modifying a different gene to compensate for the faulty gene's lost function. One research group at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, however, is using a different strategy to fight one of the most common inherited genetic diseases: Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD).

 A Novel Continuous Blood Pressure Estimation Approach Based
on Data Mining Techniques

Continuous blood pressure (BP) estimation using pulse transit time (PTT) is a promising method for unobtrusive BP measurement. However, the accuracy of this approach must be improved for it to be viable for a wide range of applications. This study proposes a novel continuous BP estimation approach that combines data mining techniques with a traditional mechanism-driven model. First, 14 features derived from simultaneous electrocardiogram and photoplethysmogram signals were extracted for beat-to-beat BP estimation. A genetic algorithm-based feature selection method was then used to select BP indicators for each subject. Multivariate linear regression and support vector regression were employed to develop the BP model. 

The accuracy and robustness of the proposed approach were validated for static, dynamic, and follow-up performance. Experimental results based on 73 subjects showed that the proposed approach exhibited excellent accuracy in static BP estimation, with a correlation coefficient and mean error of 0.852 and -0.001 ± 3.102 mmHg for systolic BP, and 0.790 and -0.004 ± 2.199 mmHg for diastolic BP. Similar performance was observed for dynamic BP estimation. The robustness results indicated that the estimation accuracy was lower by a certain degree one day after model construction but was relatively stable from one day to six months after construction. The proposed approach is superior to the state-of-the-art PTT-based model for an approximately 2-mmHg reduction in the standard derivation at different time intervals, thus providing potentially novel insights for cuffless BP estimation.
