Prompting Hierarchy
Prompting is a strategy commonly used in special education to measure the amount of support an individual needs during an activity or task. Prompts may include pointing, using pictures, guiding a student’s hand, giving verbal directions, etc. Prompting should always be faded so the individual learns to be independent and use natural cues to know what comes next. Prompts can be measured by frequency or intensity.
What does that look like?
The prompting hierarchy shows the systematic way prompts can be added or faded during instruction.
