Shirley Jones set up her own studio at Brecon in Wales Brecon and from 1975 to 2016 produced 28 Artist books in which her etchings and mezzotints complement her poems, prose-pieces and translation for the Old English and Old Welsh. Each of the books is a total concept with the choice of paper and typeface, the unity of text and image, and the harmony of the binding all as carefully considered as the visual and literary creativity involved, and each is a work of art unto itself.
The printing and the binding was done by Adrian Lack of Senecio Press and
Ludlow
binders, both very highly regarded in the
U.K.
There were five proofs of the book before Shirley Jones and the printer were satisfied that the prints of varying sizes and the right quality matched the text perfectly. The book measures 11 by 9 inches with 73 pages and starts with a small section about the history of mezzotints and how they are made. Then it describes how Shirley went to art college and started making mezzotints. The major part of the book is a description of the making of the 28 books including the many snags encountered during the 40 years of making them. It includes 70 images of which 49 are reproductions of prints in the books and nine of the bindings. At the end of the book is a list of all 28 books and the 98 rare book libraries who have purchased them.
Shirley's work has received worldwide critical acclaim. We have sold many of her tomes at the Bookpress over the years, and this will be her final book. This marbled paper covered wrapper edition is limited to 400 copies. Fine as published.

The book was printed by Mr. Hawley at his private press. The bookbinding by Campbell-Logan Bindery features hand decorated paste paper by Carol Blinn at the Warwick Press. The leaves are from the first octavo editions of the Birds and Quadrupeds. These arguably are the most important American book productions of the nineteenth century. Fine.

Pavilions include the "Pavillon du San Salvador," "An Arab House," "The Follies Parisiennes Theatre," and "The Pavilion of the Pastel." Very good.

The Temple Church had received a partial restoration by Sir Robert Smirke in 1825-1830, but a more comprehensive restoration was undertaken by Sydney Smirke (Sir Robert Smirke's brother) and Decimus Burton in 1841-1843. Unusual for the period, the opportunity was also taken to decorate the church's walls and ceilings with mural paintings, and the colored plates which illustrate these and the church's stained glass windows (designed by Thomas Willement) have turned out to be an unexpectedly useful record, as the interior of the church was destroyed in the London blitz in 1941. Sydney Smirke and the architectural draughtsman W.R.H. Essex here provide separate sections of explanatory text. Chromolithography plates by Day & Haghe. Small oval stamp of the Mercantile Library, New York, on the title and most plates, else very good.

Scarce builder's trade catalogue with only four copies recorded on OCLC. Sterling homes offered an economical home of high quality by doing all their milling off site, and shipping the precut framing to the construction site for assembly. Some people elected to assemble their houses themselves, and Sterling supplied directions for those who wanted to do that. This pattern book illustrates thirty Sterling homes, each with color exterior rendering, floor plans with specifications and description so that customers could select their ideal house. It's unusual to have a pattern book in color. Among the names given select design are The Greenfield, The Paramount, The Flamingo, etc. This is a nice snapshot of home design in the 1950s. With order forms loosely laid in. Very good.

Garlinghouse Company produced numerous trade catalogues with hundreds of house designs, this one features house designs by Iva Lieurance an early successful woman architect. She began working for Garlinghouse as an architecal designer in 1907, and was responsible for producing hundreds of designs adapting the bungalow style for mid-western housewives. She also produced designs for Colonial homes, small bungalows, Sunshine homes, and finally by the early 1950s Split Level Ranch homes further adapting
